Oh snap, it's Solstice today, isn't it. I should... uh... do something. I even have the day off (by pure coincidence).

Or I could continue to be the laziest pagan ever, the sort who forgets about his own holidays.

Bloody hell, it's -43C, that's way too cold to go mucking around outside. Fitting, though.

From Night Became Years. Something about this poem just hits right. Like, it's obviously not meant to be how I'm seeing it, but it just has that vibe. So.

☆ Received notice that I'll be going back to the office on Oct 03. It probably would have happened earlier, but the office was still being rebuilt, and it took a while because of the extent of the flood damage. Personally, I can't see the point - my work can be done no-contact, I don't need the printer, and I'll probably still be communicating with my team exclusively by IM. I'm probably going to be staying inside my office as much as possible. ...I foresee a lot of peanutbutter & jam sandwich lunches in my future.

☆ My face is So Dry and it's only been particularly cold for a few days. This winter is going to be Unbearable.

☆ Took a random day off yesterday to try to eat through some of my PTO. It was absolutely glorious. A whole weekday to do nothing! Grocery shopping at 10AM was wonderful - hardly anyone around. Then I went on a nice run in full daylight, and didn't see another person at all.

☆ It snowed today. I wasn't able to go out for a run. This totally cramps my style, and I am absolutely not impressed. The gym is not an adequate substitute! /shakesfist

☆ Forefather's Eve is coming up. Have I given thought to what I'm doing? No. Should I? Probably. Will I forget about it, like I do with most significant pagan days? ... Hopefully not, but uh, signs point to "yes". We'll see.

☆ Writing is going well, looks like I'll likely reach status goal by the end of the month (knock wood). I'm looking forward to getting into the editing stages with some of these outstanding auction fics.

Oh no, it's starting to get colder.

I'm not going to say the W-word or the M-name, because that means That Season will get here a little bit faster. But when I stepped outside this morning, I could feel it.

I'm not ready for summer to be over! It's hardly been a proper summer at all! It's been cold and rainy and gross! And August is almost over. Terrible.

Just a little bit longer...

☆ Is anybody planning to do Camp NaNo in July? I have some outstanding writing assignments that need work, so I'm definitely doing it. Probably going to aim for a low goal - 5K or so - since that's all that I really need to do. Maybe if others are doing it we could put together a cabin or something.

☆ My scroll wheel is broken and it's the MOST ANNOYING THING EVER.

☆ Whoops, somehow I completely forgot about Solstice, even with people on my tumblr dash posting so much about Kupala Night. WELL... just going to move the celebration to the weekend, then. xD Since I'm so solitary, everything is very low-key, anyhow. (Sometimes I feel like such a fake-ass pagan, but... well. It isn't really a big deal.)

☆ I caved and signed up for [community profile] fandomgiftbox. WELL, WHY NOT. Can't bring myself to do exchanges right now, but this event is very low-key, even more so than Multifandom Drabble, so I think I'll be all right.

☆ Keep getting notifications in my car that one of my signal lights will need to be replaced soon. Oh boy. It's still working so far, but obviously I'm going to want to change it before it actually needs to be changed. I've looked up videos of how to do it, and it looks relatively straightforward, just a matter of setting aside time to do it....

☆ Man, the library is so quiet on Friday mornings. It's nice. Cozy. I got SO MUCH writing done today! Very satisfied with that. :)

☆ Looks like we'll probably have another thunderstorm tonight. It sounds like a good time to chill out, listen to classical music, and bake peanut butter cookies. I've been having trouble making myself just relax lately; even my "fun time" has to be scheduled. (It's an ongoing issue.) But if I can't go anywhere, well....

[personal profile] laufeyknits threw a witchcraft-related ask meme up on tumblr. Kind of neat, but I didn't feel like doing the whole ask meme process, so I decided to be old-fashioned and fill it all out on DW.

Laufey's been doing a "31 days of spiritual journaling" thing over on her tumblr. Her discussion of all these things has been really interesting, and I've been thinking about doing it myself. But, I don't know - a lot of the questions, I feel like my response would be "not applicable" or "Hell if I know", haha. Then again, answers to why these things do not apply/do not have a good answer can also be useful to think about.

I'm going to throw the questions under a cut so that I'll have easy access to them. Maybe I'll do them at a later date.

I like this. A lot. The final lines, of course, but also just... in general. It's like Marzanna and Veles together in one poem.

Love for Other Things

It’s easy to love a deer
But try to care about bugs and scrawny trees
Love the puddle of lukewarm water
From last week’s rain.
Leave the mountains alone for now.
Also the clear lakes surrounded by pines.
People are lined up to admire them.
Get close to the things that slide away in the dark.
Be grateful even for the boredom
That sometimes seems to involve the whole world.
Think of the frost
That will crack our bones eventually.

I find myself missing the scent of cold.

I don't really feel comfortable in my skin when there isn't snow on the ground.

IT WOULD BE REALLY FUCKING NICE TO BE ABLE TO LOOK UP PAGAN STUFF WITHOUT RUNNING INTO NEO NAZI GARBAGE.

Feel like I need to scrub my eyeballs, goddamn.

☆ Eugh, it's all sloppy and damp out. I'm hoping that the muck on the sidewalks will all melt away very quickly, without staying too long in the "icy as hell in the mornings" stage, but that is wishful thinking....

☆ Started working on a lace scarf, as mentioned in previous entries. This is my first time working with laceweight yarn + lace-style pattern; we'll see how this goes. Sized up the needles because I tend to work tight, hopefully I won't end up regretting that. :T

☆ Work is crazypants and will continue to be until July or so. Typical for this time of year. Prepare for grumping about backlog, lost paperwork, and being overtired. ;p

☆ YiH: I'm thinking about doing a giveaway for one of Mikael's Year in Hereafter prints. Leaning toward "yes", but haven't decided dates yet. This one would be done through a google docs form instead of the previous method - my usual way of doing giveaways works fine for larger fandoms like Hetalia or even SSSS, but YiH is so tiny and spread across multiple platforms, hmm.

Check out this art of Marzanna. Ahhh I can't stop looking at it; I really love it. What an excellent end-of-winter portrayal of her. <3

I think in the morning I will go into the forest... There are a lot of things in the world that have been weighing heavily on me, and I need to clear my head.

☆ Back to work tomorrow. Ugh. On the one hand, it'll be nice to be able to get out of the house. On the other, my office is usually even colder than my bedroom... brr. I should remember to put some gloves in my bag. Eugh.

☆ I've been doing nothing but knitting for days and this hat is still not done, mrrrrr.

☆ Finally got around to watching Kampen om tungtvannet AKA The Heavy Water War. I'd wanted to watch it when the series originally came out, because it looked interesting, but I'm glad that I ended up waiting until there was an official release available. Apparently the fanmade subtitles that were available at an early date were a little bit questionable. ;) Anyway, it was good - highly dramatized of course, but you know. Aaaand now I want to read more about this... I'm pretty sure I have a book on it somewhere. In, um, that big pile of unread stuff. Well.

☆ ...Speaking of which, though, I really should pick up Norwegian again one of these days. There were several points while watching it that I was like "Hey! I know what they said!" but there were so, so many parts that just completely sounded like mush. x) Ehhh something to try in the new year, perhaps...

☆ One of my christmas gifts came in a really awesome box. It's sturdy and brightly-coloured and the sort of thing I've been searching for a while... I've turned it into a witchbox. 8) It can fit two spreadcloths, my altarcloth, two decks, bundles of cedar and sage, some small beeswax candles, aaand a small bag of stones. (I don't even work with stones, but they were a gift a looong time ago, so.) Feels a little bit silly to be more excited about the box than the actual present, but it's just so nice to be able to keep everything neatly in one place. (Well, not everything, but at least the fiddly bits that are hard to find a good place for.)

The bears have gone to sleep for the winter, and that means it's safe to go into the forest alone.
