We know there is no good order except that which we create.
There is no hope but us.
There is no mercy but us.
There is no justice. There is just us.
The above is a very out-of-context quote from Terry Pratchett's Reaper Man.
I feel it's a very... distilled, condensed version of how I see things.
I do believe in the divine; I do believe in gods. But I don't believe in an afterlife. I take the perspective that gods generally don't interfere with ordinary mortal existence.
It's possible that there's something after. (I really hope not, because honestly, when I'm done, I want to be done.) But since there is no way to be sure....
If there is nothing else, if there is only one life, then we need to create good order in the world around us. Not just in our own lives, but in the lives of others, because this is all that we have. We need to do our best to help each other, and to bring hope and mercy and justice into the world around us, because there is just us and we can't rely on anyone else to do it, and we can't rely on the possibility of something else.
We can't make the world perfect. But we can try.
