I finally finished watching Babylon 5.

I feel kind of like the last handful episodes were one big long drawn-out finale. It works okay when you're watching them one after another, but I wonder how it would have played out when it first came out.

There are some things that I feel like... Ehh. The stuff with the Drakh was not tied up as much as I would have liked. I found myself thinking, "What next?" and then... sudden 20-year jump? Augh. But. Anyway.

I'm really glad that I ended up deciding to watch the whole series. There were some parts of the series that I thought were better than others, some seasons that I liked more than others (though of course now that I'm actually thinking of it, I can't put my finger on specifics) but overall I had a really enjoyable time with it.

Part of me wants to rewatch from the beginning, since I have a feeling that many things from the earlier parts will feel much different when I know what happens later. But, there are so many things on my to-do list, I think I'll save that for another time. I do have access to the movies, though, so I'll watch those.

Londo and G'kar are, as Tik described it, "Something Else. The most situationship of all time". Man, I just find those two and the mess going on between them so very compelling.

I mentioned at one point (or maybe it was just to Tik) that Londo reminds me of Prince Yu from Nirvana in Fire, at least in a few small but significant ways. Mostly related to making horrible decisions out of ambitious/selfishness/etc and then continuing to make horrible decisions even when it bites him in the ass. But if Prince Yu is the personification of "The risk I took was calculated, but man, am I bad at math", Londo seems to eventually notice the calculation errors and make some correcting entries in the accounts, though not enough to make it balance properly. ...I think I'm running a little too far with this metaphor.

Apparently I ended up with mister "In purple, I'm stunning" as my B5 blorbo. Quite a surprise that I would become so attached to the embodiment of "It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me". (Then again, see above re: Prince Yu.) G'kar is more my typical type - though, I suppose he and Londo are kind of a package deal, considering how he and Londo are so entwined. (Speaking of which, everything re: "Where he goes, I go" is just. Let me sit here a bit with that. Yeahh.)

I feel like I should have more concrete thoughts (or, like, any at all) but frankly my brain is mush right now, so I'll end it here.

Fandom-wise, I have no idea what I might desire - aside from works that explore alien worldbuilding, for any/all of the alien races, which I found myself enjoying in canon but wanting more of in general. (Well, and also anything with well-characterised Londo and/or G'kar.) Whether I will set aside time to go poking around for fic remains to be seen, though.

Current status: Finished up to b5s2e8.

+ At one point while watching s1 of b5, I briefly watched the French dub just for kicks. But now while snailing my way through s2, I have noticed that Babylon Cinq is not included on the discs. Perhaps only s1 was dubbed into French? A mystery. Cannot speak on the quality of the dub of course, because I do not speak French, but anyway. An observation.

+ Have found that Lennier's grown on me a bit. Possibly because of some of the S1 episodes he was in. IDK I just find myself thinking "Oh, it's Lennier! Hi!"

+ Londo continues to be amuse me and be terribly grating at the same time. IDK. He inspires a lot of reactions.

+ That one bit where Ivanova helps Delenn with her hair was cute. Like. Very cute. I enjoyed that.

+ I see I have reached the "halfassed shipping" point in my experience of this series. And by that I mean "I have no intention to write this, and probably would not seek it out, but I am enjoying entertaining the thought of it for the span of five minutes or so". Idk. Ivanova/Delenn, Ivanova/Talia, Delenn/Sheridan apparently, etc etc etc. [/waves hand vaguely] Not feeling seriously intense about anything, but yes, enjoyable for a bit. I guess one good scene can be enough to make me want to consider something.

+ idk. I have no brains. And no further commentary. Except that b5 + a halfway decent pinot grigio is an A+++ combination.

This evening consisted of watching Babylon 5 and knitting (+wine). Which is not a bad way to spend one of the last days of the year if I do say so myself.

It Is To be Said that Londo is 500% more hilarious after a few glasses. Which considering I already find him Quite Amusing, is Very Hilarious.

And also. I have finally met [personal profile] kanadka's blorbo. HI NEROON. (Or at least I am assuming Neroon is your blorbo because you write about him A Lot, plz do correct me if I am incorrect old buddy old pal)

I have four episodes left of season 1 and I am Bound And Determined to finishe s1 before 2024 even if the thought of watching that amount of television two days in a row would usually make me want to vom.

What can I say, babylon 5 is Very Entertaining in general and also very good to watch while knitting a sock.

...I should probably go to bed.

Whoo! We're going to be getting a third season of Good Omens! (Details, such as they are)

Considering s2 was such a cliffhanger, I'm really happy that we'll get a third to wrap it up - and also that it won't get stretched further than that.

My current wishlist:

- Some kind of resolution to the drama that was set up in s2. Will s3 stick the landing? Well, I hope so! But whether or not the ending is executed well, I just want, like, a proper ending.
- A little Beelzebub/Gabriel. As a treat. Man, they don't even need to be involved in the actual plot; I'd be happy with just an update on what they're up to. It doesn't have to be much. Just a bite-sized amount. You can do a lot with a few minutes.
- Some kind of nice conclusion for Muriel. I don't really have any idea what that might entail, but considering the setup, I doubt we've seen the last of them. It's just, there's something about them that simultaneously makes me go "Oh noooo" and "You're adorable". I want to pinch their cheeks.

...And that's about it, honestly. This is one of those canons where it's like, I enjoy it, but I'm not super invested. It's kind of nice to feel so casual about something!

This past week was far too exhausting. After that whole drama with my refrigerator dying, I was running around like a chicken with its head cut off, taking care of purchasing a new one and arranging to get it delivered and so on. The new fridge is in place, and everything seems to be going fine with it, so... That's that! Definitely more fuss than I would have liked to deal with, but here we are.

Anyway. This weekend, I managed to get all my Christmas present wrapping done. If I'll be honest, I'm kind of Christmased out by now. And have been for almost a month. This season is so exhausting, man, and I can hardly wait for January.

...Despite being Christmased out, when I decided to take some downtime today, I ended up watching The Muppet Christmas Carol. It still holds up. "A Christmas Carol" has always been one of my favourite Dickens works, and the Muppet version is a really good adaptation (Muppets and all). And they didn't have to go as hard as they did with the costuming, but I totally appreciate it.

Also watched a little B5 this weekend. I've finished S1E12 now. The more I watch it, the more I think that - when I was much younger, I was really into space-y science fiction stuff, and I think kid!me might have enjoyed this. Though possibly I would have found it too serious at the time. Hard to say! Anyway, I'm very glad that I'm experiencing it now. Going to keep snailing along with it. So far I don't have any deep thoughts. I enjoy G'kar more as time goes on. Londo cracks me up. Talia would've been kid!me's favourite, at least from what I see so far.

(I wish I had more free time so I could watch more. And catch up to Tik. Who is very far ahead of me and has been having Thoughts but has been kindly cutting them so I won't be spoiled for this decades-old show. Dude's a real class act. <3 )

I hope you all had a great weekend.

Finished reading Volker Kutscher's Babylon Berlin.

Unexpectedly, I think I prefer the TV series to the novel. As a crime novel, it's a solid mystery with a great sense of place. But the TV series felt very... more. And not just because the TV version is visually stunning and flashy.

The most significant difference for me is Charlotte. She's a well-developed character in the TV version; we get a close look at her life and her ambitions and her interpersonal drama, and we see a lot of her in general. By contrast, her book characterization is very thin, and her role is mainly to be an uncomplicated love interest. That was quite a bummer for me, because I liked her dynamic with Rath a lot in the TV series - partially because the relationship is more of a slow burn - and she was my favourite character in the TV version too. In the novel, well... No.

It's possible that she gets more development in the later novels. Might be a while before I get to those, if I do - the library doesn't have them, and I'm not in a hurry to ILL them right now (though I am curious enough to do it eventually, probably, maybe).

I think part of the issue I had with the novel is that it's so plot-focused, and so Rath-centric, that nothing else really has room to breathe. Though it isn't entirely that, because even Rath's characterization was more to my taste in the TV version.

Anyway! If you're interested in crime drama set in 1929 Berlin, the original book version of Babylon Berlin is all right, but I really do suggest watching the TV adaptation instead.

Finished watching The Terror: Infamy a few days ago.

As a recap, Infamy was AMC's attempt to make The Terror into an anthology series, so this "season 2" is completely unrelated to the age of sail arctic horror from season 1. I've already given my thoughts on that decision (not a fan), so I won't get into it now. It's hard to talk about the two seasons without comparing them, but I'm going to try, since they're essentially completely unrelated shows and it wouldn't make sense to hold one up to the other.

Infamy is set during WWII, in a Japanese internment camp in the coastal USA, and the monster in this season is a yurei.

George Takei had a consulting role in this series. He's also acting in it, but his part is small and I wouldn't suggest watching it just for him.

Visually, it was pretty good. I mean in terms of costuming, visuals, effects - this show is really easy on the eyes. (And, okay, there are some very pretty people in it, which also helps. ;p) And the effects in the horror-specific parts were good, not cheesy or ineffective.

The supernatural/horror elements are more thoroughly incorporated here than they are in the original-flavour The Terror; the yurei is an important part of the story and doesn't feel pasted on, unlike season 1's Tuunbaq. In some cases the humans and the overall situation are scarier than the monster, but I think that's to be expected with a story like this. It did have a few super effective scary monster scenes, though!

Overall, it has a hopeful ending, though not everybody makes it through in one piece.

Infamy was pretty all right; not an amazing must-rec, but I thought it was worth the time to watch it. Started out doing one episode every few days, but after a bit I was watching it two at a time because I wanted to know what happened next. So, there is that. I did go into it with low expectations, because a lot of reviews I'd seen said that it was underwhelming, so this is something to take into consideration. I did find the writing uneven, and I broadly agree with the people who say that the execution doesn't live up to the concept, but it was still a lot better than I expected it to be.

I would recommend giving it a look if any of these factors appeal to you:
+ WWII US setting from the perspective of Japanese-American characters
+ Japanese monsters/ghosts/bakemono/etc
+ Pretty people in '40s clothing (and also kimono in some cases)
+ "Historical setting + horror" concept in general

I would not recommend it if these factors are important to you:
- If you need an active fandom in order to be interested in watching something (Infamy has none to speak of)
- If you want M/M or F/F canon relationships or slashy shipping potential
- If you liked original-flavour The Terror and want more of the same

So, I had assumed that the adaptation of Stephen King's The Outsider was a movie, but it's actually a 9-episode HBO series. Whoops! That was a surprise when I went to pick up my library holds. Anyway, I've been watching it on and off over the past couple of weeks; if I weren't so short on time, I would have gone through it much more quickly.

I will say, I'm rather glad that it's actually a series - a lot of stuff happens in this novel, and I don't know if it would work as well if it were broken down to a movie-length story.

Like the novel, this isn't one to pick up if you don't enjoy procedurals. The police/mystery/investigative angle is already there in the premise, and it doesn't go away here.

There are a lot of changes, but in general I found the adaptation choices interesting rather than annoying. Partly this is because I'm not overly attached to the narrative/characters in the novel, but also because the lack of straight-up retread kept it fresh.

Holly Gibney was my favourite character in the novel, and I really liked her here too. She's played by Cynthia Erivo, who I haven't seen in anything before - guess I might need to seek out some of her other work. TV!Holly is quite different from book!Holly, especially in terms of vibe - TV!Holly comes across as more grounded and confident, to me. Still a very unusual person, but more sure of herself than book!Holly.

There was one thing that I feel kind of mixed about - Continued, spoilery )

After looking up information about this series, I see that a second season was scripted, though the series was not renewed. I find it surprising that a second season was planned. There isn't anywhere to go after this; the book is done. (Unless King wrote/planned a sequel that I don't know about - always possible.) I suppose there could always be something with Ralph and Holly teaming up to investigate another crime that turns out to be something weird, but I don't know if that works for me.

Overall impression: I enjoyed both the novel and the series; the series isn't a strict retread, and that kept things interesting. Holly was great. Both book and tv adaptation are enjoyable on their own merits.

One thing that the novel does better than the series, though, is that the horror is much scarier in the book! A lot of the scenes that I found pretty creepy or viscerally unpleasant weren't as effective in visual form. Possibly this is because a lot of it was relying on kind of existential, figurative stuff that's hard to get across in a visual format.
yuuago: (Landscape - Norway - Trolltunga)
It's kind of funny (and kind of annoying) how people assume that, since I'm interested in Norwegian history and culture, I must obviously be a big fan of the viking era and totally into everything viking-related.

In truth, it's one of my least favourite periods of Norwegian history. Sure, the ships and other related archaeological finds from the period are super cool and very interesting, but beyond that, oh my god I don't care.

Partially it's due to pop culture oversimplification and misconception. It's hard to get into the related media when so much of it gets it wrong. Most Norse people weren't vikings. Viking is something you do, not something you are. If someone goes raiding, they were going viking, and when they weren't doing that, they weren't vikings at that time - and most people didn't go raiding. Vikings were basically pirates. They were fucking pirates! Being a viking wasn't like... some kind of unified national banner that they would fight under.

Anyway, when someone shoves American media about vikings under my nose, I tend to feel kind of exasperated.

There's a new spin-off of the Vikings series: Vikings: Valhalla. Someone showed me the trailer, and it was very... what I expected it to be based on previous exposure to similar things (see above). Hoo boy. They're also getting kind of creative with the history; apparently Leif Erikson and Harald Hardrada are best pals in this series, but in actual history, Leif Erikson was long dead before Harald Hardrada became king of Norway.

I would actually be very interested in watching a tv series about Harald Hardrada. But uh, not this one. And, you know, the thing is - the thing is, I wouldn't be grumpy about the existence of a fantastical alternate universe pseudo-historical drama like this if people (mostly in real life) didn't keep poking me about it and saying stuff like "oh since you're interested in Norway, you have to watch this, it's so historically accurate, you'll love it! :D :D :D!"

Nei, takk. Let's not go there.

☆ Wishing a blessed solstice to everyone, etc etc etc. I forgot all about it until this evening, per usual. (I'd probably remember these dates better if I were more plugged in to the pagan community, but that is... a subject for another day.) Anyway, I'm very much looking forward to the return of the sun, even if it's going to be rather, uh, incremental.

☆ My car was experiencing some issues, so I took it in. Surprise, it's going to require some costly repair! And another battery change. I wish I could say I'm shocked, but my car is a hunk of junk the kind of vehicle that would probably do perfectly fine somewhere warm like, I dunno, Calgary, but really doesn't handle our extreme weather very well.

☆ No response from my beta reader on that FTH fic. Starting to wonder if they haven't been checking that particular email. I'm beginning to feel the desire to just throw the thing on Ao3 and then edit it later if they ever do respond.

☆ I feel like my tumblr dash is conspiring to make me watch Columbo. Except it's just Tik posting a lot of it, so it's a one-man plot. If I had more time, he would have succeeded. ;V

☆ Just saw the trailer for The Tragedy of Macbeth. I had not heard about this until now! I'm super interested! It looks really artsy.

Finally finished season 5 of Poldark. Now I'm finished with it, and not going to lie, I kind of want to rewatch it. Pretty costumes, drama, history and politicking, spying - man, it has a little bit of everything. It's like fancy popcorn, and I had a great time gobbling it up.

Ahh, finished with season 3 of Poldark.

- Just when I thought George Warleggan couldn't get more cartoonishly evil... he did. WELL.
- Not going to lie though, I did feel halfway bad for him during that one moment when he was acting genuinely remorseful about something. (Too bad he had to go and ruin it by being his usual self in his next scene.)
- The costumes in this show continue to be Very Enjoyable.
- You know, I didn't like Caroline much when she first showed up - it seemed like she was being set up to be a female version of George - but after her growth/development etc since then, I like her a lot. I'm glad we keep seeing more of her.
- Everything to do with Rowella and the Vicar made my eyebrows lift right up to my hairline. Just. What.
- I see Ross Poldark continues to be cartoonishly moral (the better to oppose George's cartoonish evilness) while also continuing to make terrible decisions in his personal life. This guy is kind of a mess.
- Demelza should magically become ruler of Cornwall, or at least Truro & area. She's the only person with her head screwed on properly.

...Anyway. Much drama, such popcorn.gif, wow. I don't know what on earth I'm going to do when I'm finished with this series. (Watch the whole thing over again! ...No. Maybe?)

+ I had three weekdays off from work and it was positively delicious. A++ would do again (and fortunately I have the vacation time available to do it.) Bloody hell, it was so nice to wake up in the morning and not have to do anything at all, not even chores. Today I went down to the park with a coffee and a book, and sat there for hours, and it was the most relaxing afternoon I've had in ages.

+ Discovered that vols 5-7 of Fruits Basket aren't currently available at the library, since they're on order, and that means that all I can do now is roll around on the floor and wail until they come in. (Well, let's not be dramatic about it.) Finished v4 today, still enjoying it, looking forward to more. It's definitely taking a turn that I didn't initially expect, so there's that. The friend who, years ago, predicted that I would like Ayame - they were 100% correct, I do appreciate the flamboyant pretty snake guy, hahaha. (Ah, that was Parzi who said that, I think - damn, I haven't heard from her in over a decade, I hope she's doing okay.)

+ Just heard that the creators of Dark are working on a new historical horror series, 1899. It's due to come out next year, and even though I don't know many details yet, I'm interested. Dark was so good! So, hopefully this'll be great too.

+ Thanks to my time off, the main editing for the idfic I was working on is done. I had to cut out ~1300 words from it, which was quite a surprise. Most of my work is so short that, well - if you took out that much, it'd be an enormous chunk of the fic. Not so this time. ...Anyway, I'm now at the "searching for overused words/phrases and nitpicking everything" stage, which is also terrible. (Editing is always terrible.)

A Valdemar TV adaptation is in the works? Of the Last Herald Mage trilogy? Apparently!

My inner teenager is in tears from joy, and present me is just sitting here surprised.

It'll likely be a while before anything actually comes of this, but still. I'm excited! It'll most likely be sparkly glorious trash. Honestly, if it isn't sparkly glorious trash, I'll be disappointed. Bring on the popcorn.

Love how they just went straight for the Last Herald Mage. Turn everything right up to 11 with Vanyel. Bless.

(All the better for me, since I haven't actually read most of the Valdemar books. The local library only had a few - luckily, this set included.)

Man, this trilogy meant so much to teenage me. And... honestly, when I re-read it a few years ago, I still enjoyed it, even if I could admit that it wasn't actually very good. Even now, there's just something about it that appeals to my deepest, shiniest desires. Embarrassing though it is, there are some elements/aesthetic choices that I look at in my current writing and recognize "Ah, right, that came from the Vanyel books". (And also the Bardic Voices books, but that's neither here nor there.)

The big question, though: who the hell should be cast as Vanyel?! It would be hella hard to find someone pretty enough to play him. In some discussions I've seen, people were suggesting that various Cdrama actors might be most likely to have the right look, and... honestly, I see what they mean, there. I could dig that. (But who?)

+ I've been watching Poldark while doing my knitting, and... man, I don't know why it took me so long to get around to this. It's exactly the sort of dramatic historical nonsense that my soul desires. (I think I initially assumed it was some sort of historical fantasy thing? But I might have been getting it mixed up with the Strange & Norrell adaptation, which came out around the same time.) Just finished the first season, and wished to keep going right away buuut I've been trying to limit myself to only one episode per night because of the usual "if I watch all of it then there won't be any more" problem. Anyhow. My deepest desires right now are fancy costumes and ~drama~ and the occasional pretty scenery, and this delivers in spades. Apparently it's based on a novel series? Which my local library doesn't carry, but maybe once ILL becomes a thing again, I'll investigate....

+ My tumblr dash is conspiring to get me to watch Major Grom: Plague Doctor, the recently-released Russian superhero film. It's an adaptation of a comic book, and I know one person from Russian fandom who was looking forward to it very much - apparently she thought it was pretty satisfactory. And now Tik has gotten into it, so, I mean, obviously it's inevitable that I will watch it soon; I clearly have no choice. [/throws up hands in mock-surrender!] I will not lie, I know nothing about it other than the title, but that plus the reception from people I like is enough to get me curious, even though at this point I'm rather tired of superheroes.

+ Good gods, I am so sick of my own writing. (I am at that "this is all terrible" stage of working on something. Bleh.)

The fandom for The Terror has been talking about an upcoming series, The North Water. Trailer just dropped! Age of sail? I'm in!

It's an adaptation of a novel of the same title by Ian McGuire, which I haven't read (but the library has it, so maybe I'll check it out).

Looks like it's mostly murder and survival stuff. Fun! Nothing supernatural, but like a lot of people who loved The Terror, it was the boats and such that mainly drew me in, so we're all good. Looking forward to this one, though it'll probably be a good while before I see it.

There is going to be a second season of Good Omens! Neil Gaiman posted about it on his blog here.

I'm tentatively excited! In general, I feel like the story stands well by itself, and it doesn't need a sequel, but if ideas for it have been floating around that long, and everyone's on board, well... Why not. ;V

Of course, even after it's released, I won't be able to watch it until it's out on disc, so it'll be quite the wait. But I'm still looking forward to it!
