Geocaching adventures
Feb. 19th, 2024 09:05 pmAs planned, went geocaching today!
It was chilly; not too cold, but crisp. I went down by the Snye to try for a cache that looked promising - the kind that would be challenging to look for in summer due to bugs and dust and people hanging around. No dice, though; no matter what, I couldn't find the damn thing. I'm reluctant to mark it as a DNF though, 'cause I have a feeling I was looking in the wrong spot. So, I'll go back at some other time, possibly when it's slightly warmer, and see if I have better luck. Maybe it'll be easier to find it on a day when I have a fresher mind and fingers that aren't totally freezing.
The other two were urban micros. One was hidden in a very clever way; camouflaged to look like a bolt, and wedged into a bit of concrete - the kind of thing where you'd normally overlook it, unless you happened to be looking for it and realized, "Wait, you normally wouldn't see a bolt there".
But, on the other hand, I typically find micros kind of disappointing. The fun of regular-sized caches is that there's usually an actual logbook to sign, and room to leave a little prize. I always keep some tiny plastic dinosaurs in my bag for that purpose. Micros, though - that's usually just a roll of paper to sign. Not much!
I did have a good time, though. I might try doing more of this. There are a few caches out at the other end of town that I normally wouldn't think about trying, since they're so far out of my way, but if I make a point of setting time aside to do it... why not? Of course, it's impossible to find all the caches in town - you will never catch me trying to search for a micro out in the woods, and puzzle caches aren't my thing - but a lot of them do seem doable.
