As planned, went geocaching today!

It was chilly; not too cold, but crisp. I went down by the Snye to try for a cache that looked promising - the kind that would be challenging to look for in summer due to bugs and dust and people hanging around. No dice, though; no matter what, I couldn't find the damn thing. I'm reluctant to mark it as a DNF though, 'cause I have a feeling I was looking in the wrong spot. So, I'll go back at some other time, possibly when it's slightly warmer, and see if I have better luck. Maybe it'll be easier to find it on a day when I have a fresher mind and fingers that aren't totally freezing.

The other two were urban micros. One was hidden in a very clever way; camouflaged to look like a bolt, and wedged into a bit of concrete - the kind of thing where you'd normally overlook it, unless you happened to be looking for it and realized, "Wait, you normally wouldn't see a bolt there".

But, on the other hand, I typically find micros kind of disappointing. The fun of regular-sized caches is that there's usually an actual logbook to sign, and room to leave a little prize. I always keep some tiny plastic dinosaurs in my bag for that purpose. Micros, though - that's usually just a roll of paper to sign. Not much!

I did have a good time, though. I might try doing more of this. There are a few caches out at the other end of town that I normally wouldn't think about trying, since they're so far out of my way, but if I make a point of setting time aside to do it... why not? Of course, it's impossible to find all the caches in town - you will never catch me trying to search for a micro out in the woods, and puzzle caches aren't my thing - but a lot of them do seem doable.

Did some geocaching today. This one was a tricky find in an easy location. Took me a while to find it, because I turned out to be looking in completely the wrong place. Ahh, well. ;p But at least I figured it out! Teeny tiny magnet cache, very easy to miss it. Glad I was able to log that one.

The Wonders of the World challenge is over; unfortunately, I never did get that last stamp that I needed in order to complete part 1 of it. The idea behind the challenge was very cool, but I feel like it's not suitable to all locations - I could see it working very well in a mostly-urban area with a sizeable active geocaching community, but up here there are some factors that made it not work out so well. Like bears. And microcaches in the woods (augh!). And stamps getting randomly-assigned to caches that are way out in hard-to-access locations and probably aren't actually there any more.

So! What this means is that I was able to clear some things from my "to look for" list that I probably wouldn't have been able to find anyway, and can limit myself to stuff that is probably still there rather than "somebody found it in 2020, maybe it still exists". And also I can avoid tramping through mud. (...Maybe.)

It was a lovely day today, so I did a bit of geocaching.

My adventures took me into a quiet residential area near the forest. Kind of a middle of nowhere part of town; my brother had baseball practice down there back when we were kids, but I haven't been there since.

One was a new cache, hidden cleverly. It was a lockable tupperware container, and the cache owner had taped some very strong magnets to the inside of the lid, then placed it up on the inside of a roofed trail map. Really good place for one of these - it'll keep it nice and dry, and a lot of people don't think to look up.

The other... ugh. A forest cache. It was warm out, so the walk wasn't as unpleasant as it could have been, but I still ended up stomping through very deep snow for quite a while. The GPS took me to a steep dip, and there was no way in hell I was going to go down there when I couldn't be sure where I was putting my feet. SO, this one had to be logged as a Did Not Find. Alas.

Which is a real pain, because that forest cache has one of the stamps I need for the Wonders challenge. There's only one other cache in town with that stamp that I haven't tried to find yet, and it's out along some obscure access road and hasn't been found since 2020. Two people tried to find it last year, but marked it as DNF. I'll still look for this one eventually, but first I'll have to figure out where the heck that access road even is.

Hopefully in April or something I'll be able to avenge some of the caches I wasn't able to find over winter. ;V I should have started looking before we got that huge snow dump.

+ Went geocaching earlier this week. It was an extremely long walk. Upside: the trails look very nice this time of year! Downside: Once I got to the general area, I spent a lot of time thrashing around in the snow, and ultimately didn't find anything. Didn't realize it would be that deep! Whoops. Ah, well, some other time....

+ Watched The Circle/Der Kreis(2014), a docudrama about the gay scene in 1950s Zurich. It's centred around a group who were involved with a magazine publication (The Circle of the title), especially one couple in particular. There was a whole lot going on at the time - social/drag events, murders, smuggling copies of the magazine into Germany... Part of it is drama enactment, and part of it is straight-up documentary. Anyway, I found it very interesting. Not a new film, so probably a lot of you have already seen it, but if you haven't, I think it's worth checking out.

+ There's been a lot of Arthurian stuff on my tumblr dash recently, and man, it reminded me of how much I used to enjoy all that. Like, I'm very glad that I left academia, but there's a part of me that misses medieval literature very much, and Arthurian stuff in particular. I should haul out my copy of Le Morte Darthur one of these days and go through it again....

Had to make a trip to the bottle depot today, and while I was down in the industrial area, I decided to go looking for a geocache that I knew was somewhere around there.

The coordinates took me down a walking trail that I've never been on, sandwiched in between the back of the warehouses and some greenbelt in front of the riverbank. It's actually a pretty nice area, even if it's a very, very weird place for a walking trail. I think the logic behind its existence is that, theoretically, people who work in the area could use it during lunch break etc. But - well. Nobody who works down there gets a lunch break long enough to allow for a walk, if you know what I mean. ...Anyway.

This one had a bunch of DNFs in the log, so for weeks it's been on my "Maybe I'll go looking for it, but it might not even be there any more" list. But recently, someone logged it as found! Hooray! The knowledge that it was actually there and in good shape was encouraging.

It was a miserable day for a walk, very cold, but I did find it! It was a magnetic micro attached to a really clever wouldn't-think-to-look-there spot on a municipal trash can. This leads me to think of another geocache, also described as a magnetic micro, that I had to log as DNF because I couldn't find it no matter what. If it was attached in the same way that this one was, I'll be able to avenge that DNF pretty soon. :V

For the Wonders of the World stamp challenge: this brings me to 6/7 of part 1. The final stamp that I need - I've taken a look, and there are five caches in town with that designation. One was a DNF for me. Two haven't been logged since 2020. Two more have nothing but DNFs in the recent logs. All but one are in bear-risk areas. Iiii'm probably going to have to wait until after we get some snow to look for any of these, aren't I. :|a On the upside, it'll probably just be a couple of weeks, and I'm so damn busy that I don't even have time to be fussed over it.

+ Ahhh, the world outside has that autumn smell. I resolve to enjoy it as long as we have it! We really only get maybe a month of nice autumn weather, maybe a month and a half, so it won't stay here long. It's getting to be pretty chilly in the mornings. This morning's jog was brisk and it left me wanting to throw on my softest, coziest hoodie afterward.

+ Went Geocaching yesterday. Residential location, simple microcache, but I still completely failed to find it. ...Not going to lie, though, I'm looking forward to when we get enough frost/snow that the trails will be bear-free and forest geocaching will be doable. It'll be neat to try to find some of those. As long as they're not fucking microcaches.

+ I'm taking Wednesday off this week, and I'm so glad. Sometimes it's nice to just... have a day off, as a treat. I'm going to sleep in, work on fic, and make some soup, ohhh yeahhh.

+ Finally posted the beta-read version of my fic for [community profile] iddyiddybangbang. (The version I posted earlier was unproofed... shhh) Man, I am so glad that people offer beta services in FTH; otherwise it can be such a challenge to find a beta when I need one. Usually my friends are too busy to help, and, well... beta reading from people who're in my fandoms but aren't people I know tends to give mixed results. ANYWAY, I'm glad to have this fic off the table. I drafted it in a crazed rush some time in 2017, and it's nice to not have to look at it in my wip folder any more.

+ Had to overnight petsit my brother's neurotic hunting dog. That's always an Experience. ;V Nothing like being jolted awake at midnight by howling because someone heard a car pass by outside... (He's a good boy, but man, I am not a dog person.)

+ Went to do advance voting. Not feeling optimistic. The only local campaigning I've seen was for varieties of conservative - Regular Conservative, Double Conservative, and Extra-Spicy Wingnut Conservative. There were other options on the ballot, but I sure haven't heard a peep out of any of them. Business as usual, then. (Ugh.)

+ Did some geocaching today, and unlike my past three attempts, I actually managed to find the damn thing this time. Hooray! I was starting to think I'm totally hopeless at this. ;p Since I'm going along with the Wonders of the World in-game challenge, I have to be more selective about which caches I look for, so that I'll be able to get the correct stamps. I have a strong preference for urban geocaches, but this thing has led to some bushwacking instead. It's a very different experience.

+ I've finished listening to The Magnus Archives. Still processing. Entry will follow once I've sorted out my impressions of Season 5. (Hopefully.) Aside from that, I'm trying to figure out where I want to go from here! Re-listen to TMA? Pick up Night Vale again? Something different altogether? Who knows!

+ I managed to clean up all of the work-related mess from my previous entry.

- It took 7 hours of overtime to do it, and I really would have preferred to do something else with my weekend. ;p (Going to have to have A Word with the person who filled in for me... not looking forward to that.)

+ I decided to revisit an old geocache that I logged four years ago. It doesn't count as a new find for the purpose of logging, but the location was moved between the time I found it and now, so it was like looking for a new cache. Fun!

- I wore shorts, because it was hot out and I was thinking the cache would be in a cleared area. Nope! Scrambling over tree trunks in an off-trail hide full of rose bushes. Jesus. Next time, I'll be smarter. ;p

+ People continue to use the Little Library near my house. I picked up a couple of trashy thrillers, hooray!

- The bench area it's next to is full of garbage. JFC, why can't people clean up after themselves?! I'm going to go there this evening with gloves and a trashbag and tidy it up. >:|

+ The cooked-from-frozen veggie pizza I had for supper was delicious. A++, way to go Past Yuuago for keeping that on hand in anticipation of a day when I'd be too exhausted to cook anything; Current Yuuago appreciates it.

Today was very busy, but pretty good. Finished up some work very early, and then went out geocaching. :D Found two caches today - probably could have done more, but I don't want to go through everything in the area too quickly. I'll leave some for next weekend, too.

You can definitely feel that autumn is coming. The air smells like it. It was almost too cold to wear shorts today, and I have very mixed feelings about that.

And now I'm off work until Thursday, hooray! Planning to do some relaxing, some reading, and... hopefully work on some fic, too.
yuuago: (YiH - Mika - Joy)
Did some geocaching tonight. It's been ages since I went looking for any, and it felt so good! Will admit, part of it was that I was refraining from even taking a look at what was there, because I didn't want to disappoint myself. A lot of caches were damaged during the fire in 2016, and then the flood in 2020 wiped out some more, so I kind of assumed there... wouldn't be much there.

But! It looks like some people have been active during the past two years, so there are a whole bunch of new caches. :D Hooray! Including ones that are not in the woods (which is great because we still have a bit of a bear problem).

I'm reaaallly looking forward to doing more of these... Like, I've been getting plenty of exercise lately, but a lot of my days are pretty much the same, including the routes that I take for walks etc, so I've been feeling extremely blah for a while now. Maybe doing something different and mildly challenging will be stimulating. Yay, enrichment!!
yuuago: (Promare - Mad Burnish - With you)
I keep meaning to take up geocaching again, and then just... not. It's partly because a lot of the caches that I know about are in forest areas, so it isn't safe to go there alone during bear season. But another reason is that Fort Mac is just not very impressive when it comes to number, variety, and maintenance of caches. It's very "An Attempt Was Made".

Still. I haven't checked for a while. I should look. Maybe I'll be surprised.

Definitely looking forward to my trip to Newfoundland next year. We'll be in the provincial capital. Big city with lots of tourists. There's bound to be some neat caches in the city centre.

Then again, do I need to add another hobby when my daily walks take up so much of my time? Haaa....

I've gone down roughly a size over the past year. Feel kind of conflicted about it. I don't like that people keep commenting on my weight. Aside from more fraught reasons, it's just a very rude thing to do. On the other hand, all of those shirts that my mom shrank in the wash fit me now, so there's that. On the other-other hand, a lot of my other clothes don't fit properly any more, which is quite a problem because I really don't want to buy new clothes. ...But since I'm still working from home, it's not something I need to worry about right now.

Have been slacking on the bodyweight exercises becauuuuse for quite a while there it was too hot to do that sort of thing. But I'll have to look into starting it up again soon. And maybe some other stuff.

Mostly still working on cardio, though.

There's this one hill near my house... pretty steep. The route I usually take typically goes down it, but now that the weather's cooling down a little, I'm planning to start to go up it instead. I think the effort will really pay off.

Man, I enjoy working out outside so much... The gym is reopened but even without the pandemic stuff going on, I don't think I'd go. SUNSHINE!!! FRESH AIR!!! YAY.

☆ When I was walking the dogs yesterday, I realized that the air smelled like autumn. Obviously, there's still some summer left, but. Soon. :V

☆ I recently gave up my flip-phone in favour of a smartphone. What this means: Soon (when life slows down a little) I'll be able to take up geocaching again! I never really was able to do it properly before, because I didn't have my own smartphone and my transportation was limited, but now that both of those problems are solved, I have more options. A lot of local caches have been destroyed in recent years (due to fires and floods) but there are still quite a few left to look for. Many of them are forest caches, so I'll have to wait until winter before it's safe to go looking for those, but I'm still really excited.

☆ Realized today that I would have been leaving on my trip in just over a week, if 2020 hadn't been how it is. :( ...Ah. Well. Next year! Or the one after that.

☆ Been doing research to buy some furniture recently. It's proving to be a complete pain in the ass. You'd think it'd be pretty simple to buy a white book case, but no! Local options are super limited. Damn, people who are able to just buy something from IKEA don't know how good they have it. (The closest one is a 5-hour drive away. Getting stuff delivered is around $200. Sigh.)

Because I'm too tired for a proper entry -

✿ I went mucking around in the woods yesterday! I saw three deer! And found a trail that goes deep down to the stream! And did some bushwhacking, and scouted out the general location of a geocache, but since I had neither a pen nor swag on me, I decided not to prod for the exact spot. (Note to self, go back there this weekend. ...And wear gloves. And possibly thicker trousers. ROSEBUSHES EVERYWHERE, I WILL NEVER BE RID OF THEM.)

✿ Apparently when given the choice between nervewracking highway driving practice or parking practice on small roads, I'll choose the highways. Blurgh. WHY do people let their kids play on the road?! And WHY does nobody drive the speed limit here?!

✿ I'm working stacked shift all through this week, and all through the next (with the exception of Victoria Day). I'm gonna die. (When will this fic get written? WHO KNOWS)

✿ Pokemon Go victory: I FINALLY HAVE A BLISSEY. And I earned the 1000KM badge! It's too bad that the badges don't stack; I'd like to earn another one, for another 1000KM. ;) But at least it tracks how much you've walked even after you get gold. And ALSO I finally found an opportunity to stick a pokemon into the gym near my workplace, the one with low turnover - which means that I get 10 coins every day without having to do anything at all. It's glorious.

✿ I have discovered that our library has some of Sapkowski's Witcher novels, so I might have to pick some up this weekend, see how I like them. My mate Tik says she found them kind of blah, but I can't not give them a try, because holy shit, medieval fantasy Poland. I need more of that in my life. :V And apparently Netflix is going to be doing a Witcher tv series? Which is surprising - and I admit that I raised eyebrows a little - but maybe it will be good? Or at least better than the Polish TV series, which I am informed is terrible (of the "let's pretend this never happened" sort, not the "so bad it's good" sort).

✿ Today was driving practice downtown. IT WENT WELL. Turns out that Sunday mornings are an excellent time for driving in the areas that make me the most nervous. So, I expect I'll be doing more of that in the future. Starting next week. Which is great, because it means that if I drive down to the library, it means that I have enough time and energy to spend exploring the nature trails on Macdonald Island and along the river. I don't get to do that when I take the bus.

✿ I bought some boots yesterday, and I'm completely enamoured with them. Stylish dark brown leather lace-ups. They don't just look good, they're comfortable, and they fit properly, and considering how much of an ordeal it can be for me to find shoes like that... I'm happy. I feel like I'd actually be able to wear these on a regular basis, unlike my other ones, which all have heels on 'em. I mean, I love wearing heels, but considering my typical weekend wanderings are anywhere from 5-10km... well. Anyway, they make me feel very stylish and handsome, and I can hardly wait to wear them at every opportunity. (It's been kind of hard to motivate myself to dress fashionably without appropriate footwear, y'know?)

✿ You know, I've lived in this house for 17 years, and it's only just now that I discovered there is enough room on my windowsill for some flowerpots. Soooo, now I have some seeds planted for rosemary and spearmint. I'd hoped for sage too, but wasn't able to find it available anywhere - ah, well. This is a nice start, anyway. I'm not sure where on earth I'll put them in winter, assuming this is successful, but we'll see how it goes.

✿ I got SO much writing done today! It helps that for a good portion of Saturday, I had the house to myself, which meant that I could write at the kitchen table, where there's lots of room and light, and nobody to pester me, unlike usual. Amazing what can happen when there isn't someone poking their nose in my business every five seconds. :V I managed to make some progress on my NOFM assignment, which is nice. Also the Vesa/Suvi "accidental courting" thing that I started earlier this week. Aaaand I finished the draft for the Joona/Anssi thing I started for Porn Battle (and who knows, maybe I'll have finished editing it by the time the next amnesty session goes up in June-ish). So, yes. Good weekend for writing. I'm really happy about it.

✿ Today I went geocaching and this time I actually FOUND THE THING. I swear, I've been past this place twice before, looking for it, and the container was right in front of my face the whole time. [/facepalm] Wandering around in the woods is something I've never done enough of, and I'm starting to get more confident when it comes to mucking around in the bush, so hopefully I'll be able to get out there more often and find some more caches. I'm really curious about the condition of the ones in the Birchwood - I have a feeling that a lot of them might have been damaged, but you never know. Anyway, I've bought some thick gloves to deal with the rosebushes, and with luck I'll be able to set aside time for some wandering before the mosquitoes become intolerable. Unfortunately, it's already bear season, but ehhhh one can't have everything, I guess.
yuuago: (Tistow - Veeti - Glance)
You'd think I'd have learned not to take naps after supper, but apparently not. Yesterday I woke up at 11:30 PM and proceeded to flip my shit because I thought I'd slept in... fortunately, we still have proper nights right now; we aren't into "still bright past 11" season yet. So one look out the window fixed that. But I sure do feel like a bag of fail, pffff.

I have no idea what I'm going to do tomorrow. Library's closed, transit is reduced... what a bummer. Maybe I'll go for a walk in the woods, if it isn't too soggy in there, as long as I remember to bring the bear whistle. There are some geocaches that look like they would be easily accessible, and I want to check to see if they survived the controlled burning over the winter. The one that I found a few weeks ago, just on the edge of the Birchwood Trails, was not in very good shape - somebody else had come by and hastily repaired it, but it could have been better. ...Maybe I should take some duct tape. And an extra container or two. And add some more Euro cent coins to my messenger bag pocket - they make for pretty good swag, nice and compact and ~exotic~.

There are rumours that it's going to snow. Please, no. Or, well - I shouldn't say that. We need precipitation. So I suppose it should be "if it's going to snow, please let it melt soon after". I guess.

Aaand since I forgot to do Reading Wednesday yesterday, here's a brief one:

Currently Reading: Race to the South Pole: The Expedition Diaries of Scott and Amundsen, edited by Roland Huntford. I haven't reached the part where things start to get really horrible for Scott, not yet. But his diary entries kind of make me want to claw my face off. Even from the very beginning, his expedition seems like an absolute clusterfuck. Whhyyyyy ponies, of all animals! Why fabric anoraks instead of fur?! Why take experimental motorized sledges, ones that haven't been thoroughly tested in extreme conditions?! ...And then there are Amundsen and Bjaaland's entries, which are brief but cheerful, and keep going on about how excellent the skiing is, pfff. One would think they were on vacation.

Also Reading (And also a rec): My copy of the Building Fires in the Snow anthology arrived last week. At this point, I've only read some of the poetry in it, not any of the short stories, but so far I can definitely say that the poetry is lovely. Aside from that, one thing that I found really touching was the introduction. It made me feel like this anthology is coming from a place that I can identify with. A lot of the time, when I read non-fantasy LGBT2QA works, I feel very... detached from it, because I feel that it has nothing to do with me. The kind of community and experiences that have appeared in other anthologies that I've read speak to something that does not exist here. If I try to find any sense of community at home, it's like... what community? The only public LGBT2QA event that I can remember was followed up by someone stealing and burning the pride flags* (but thankfully, no physical violence). But this book, with its emphasis on nature, and remoteness, and the difficulties of building up relationships as a result of that remoteness, and the necessity of the closet... Its mention of the fact that many people who were approached declined to contribute because of the fear of being outed and the very real danger that could come from that... The northern experience is not a big city experience. This isn't Vancouver, this isn't San Francisco, this isn't Toronto. This is something that I can identify with. Anchorage is a much bigger city than Fort McMurray, and of course it's much farther north, but the poetry I have read in this book so far feels like home. And the way so many of the works are firmly situated in nature, an existence utterly surrounded by it -- yes. That's it. That's my experience. It makes me feel like I'm not so alone. (I'll confess, I cried.) ...So. If you do get a chance to read this anthology, please do. Whether you're looking for LGBT2QA lit, or if you want to read something about life in the more northern parts of North America, I really do recommend it. I might have to see if I can get my local library to add it to their collection.

Reading Next: The library had In Calabria by Peter S. Beagle, so that needs to go before anything else. I loved The Last Unicorn, but haven't read any of his other works, so we'll see how this one is. Aside from that, I've felt a vague desire to read Lord of the Rings. And I've also felt like re-reading T Kingfisher's The Raven and the Reindeer for a while now. Ehhh, who knows. :V

☆ Today was relaxing. I didn't do much. It's probably for the best. Walked around a bit to enjoy the weather, did some windowshopping... found a lovely little cafe that I've passed by a lot of times, and I wish I'd gone in sooner, because they have amazing sandwiches and their coffee is wonderful. And they serve it in mugs as big as soup bowls. That is exactly to my taste. xD So... I spent some time writing there, obviously. The fic I'm working on is more like Extruded Fic Product, but if I keep banging away at it, maybe something will happen.

☆ Was poking around one of the many used bookstores here, and ended up walking out with... a cookbook. Which is surprising, because I hardly ever cook (make desserts, yes, but cook things for supper... no. tl;dr me + cooking = incompatible with the way my family schedules mealtimes). But anyway, it's a book of simple Italian recipes, and they look relatively idiot-proof - but what actually drew me was that the author shares a surname with my mother's side of the family. It's not one I stumble across often, because it's a pretty rare name. Anyway, after investigating, we're probably not distant relations, alas (he's from central Italy, whereas my family is northern - from Friuli) but that's all right. xD Maybe some time I can try making some of these things... it has instructions on how to make home-made spaghetti sauce, and it looks like something I could do. I don't like anything with tomatoes in it, but I think my mother will love it. AND ALSO it has stuff on how to make pannacotta... and polenta... and omg I want to learn how to make gnocci, it looks time-consuming but relatively painless. HMMmmm.... I'm going to have to try some of these on the few days when I'm left to my own devices.

☆ Did some geocaching this evening. Tried one; didn't find it. And it should have been a REALLY EASY find, too. Hell, someone even found it yesterday, according to the logs. But it just... wasn't there? It's possible that it got muggled, but. What even. I might try again later in the week, just to make sure. I guess I could have poked around more thoroughly, but there were people nearby (not too close, just close enough) and I didn't want to look like a weirdo feeling up stone walls. (Wat.) I ended up going to look for a different cache in the evening, to make up for the lack of success earlier. At least I managed to find that one.

☆ Speaking of geocaching, man, some people sure do have Opinions on urban microcaches. And by that I mean, a lot of those Opinions boil down to "they suck". Well, screw that. I mean, most of my finds so far have been microcaches, with one exception, so it's not like I'm in a position to make an informed opinion. But the thing is, this isn't the kind of hobby that everyone can do easily. A lot of larger caches require transportation to not-easy-accessible areas, as well as hiking. Now, I don't mind hiking, but transport - that's an issue. Also, there's the issue of seasonal access - in Fort Mac, for example, a lot of the larger caches are located in the woods, and while a walk in the woods is pretty nice, it's not exactly something you want to do alone during bear season. Hell, last week, I was looking for a cache in the bush in the downtown area, and when I came out, I saw a Bear Warning sign that I'd missed when going in. (It was kind of funny, actually. Warning not just for a bear, but a Problem Bear. I mean, obviously it's a "problem" because it's hanging around by apartment buildings, but it reads more like it's a bear that Has Issues. xD) ...So uh, basically what I'm saying is, in my totally-newbie-ish opinion, urban microcaches are great because they give people a safe and accessible way to enjoy a hobby that they might otherwise not be able to participate in. Not to mention, it's a good way for beginners to figure out if they'll enjoy it at all.

☆ I had a Pleasant and Civilized Conversation with a stranger today. Who happened to be really hot. And he had really nice, really loooong hair. He looked like a prince and I felt like an awkward potato. +10 points to me for being social, though. This is not something that happens often. (Not to mention that if someone talks to me back at home, it's usually because they want money, or cigarettes, or to convert me to something. No wonder I don't usually talk to people.)

☆ Meeting Aki tomorrow. I'm gonna die. (No, I won't.) ...I'm gonna put my foot in my mouth 3652346 times. (Yes, probably.)

Juuuust a quick one before bed....

☆ Found my first Geocache on Monday night, but forgot to bring a pen with me, so I wasn't able to log it until this evening. It was fun, though. I downloaded a geocaching-oriented gps mapper onto the phone I use for PokeGo, so it's basically hitting two birds at once. Works pretty well, too.

☆ Caught a Slowpoke while I was out, near the cache. :D This was a new one. I've seen them on the tracer in this location a couple of times, so it looks like it might be a reliable place to catch them. We'll have to see. Recently, I've been going out without catching anything in mind - vibration turned off - because I just want to hatch allll these eggs, but I might make an exception for something like that, since it doesn't show up often.

☆ Have to go downtown on Friday to get my passport sent in for renewal. Apparently they moved the Service Canada office away from the provincial building; now it's some whackadoodle place, I don't even know... WELL looks like finding it might be an adventure. But that's okay. The location is past that park with the geocache in it, the one where I looked twice and got so many mosquito bites. Maybe this time I'll actually be able to find it, or at least figure out which tree out of many the cache is supposed to be in.

☆ Finished my fic for [community profile] rarepairfest. ...I had intended to have it on last Saturday, but I got stuck on the ending. So glad that it's finished now, though! I'll probably end up tweaking it over and over up until fics are revealed, but at least it's in. (It's a perfectly acceptable fic, mind you, I just - keep feeling like I should poke at it more.) Maybe now that it's finished, I'll be able to relax and get some personal writing done.

☆ My mate Scout threw together a doodle of me as an exhausted peacock and Let Me Tell You, that is a 100% accurate description of yours truly, most days.

☆ I leave for Victoria in just a few days. AAAAHHH!!!! I'm so excited to go. And I'm so excited to meet up with Aki! <3 This's gonna' be good.

Came across a kid catching pokemon with his father when I was walking home from the bus stop today. Normally I'm not into kids but... it was so cute. He was gushing about how he wants a Vileplume, aww. <3

MAN my connection is running like ass today. Maybe the universe is telling me to get off the computer and go do something productive with my time. Like... uh... hold on, give me a minute....

Kind of want to go see Ghostbusters - I've heard it's silly fun, which is always good - but the cinema is on a reduced schedule, so I can't do my usual "lunch + matinee" thing, sigh. Well, maybe I'll be able to arrange something. WHO KNOWS.

Fully expect that this weekend will involve a lot of running around. I have SO MANY errands to do. And... I also want to do some geocaching. And pokego-ing. Probably going to manage a little bit of both. There seem to be some microcaches in the next neighbourhood over, so I'm going to see if I can manage to find at least one of them, though I might not be able to hit all of them on the same day, since things are kind of spread out around here. And I want to try again with the one downtown that I couldn't find last week. ...But I'm definitely going to bring bug spray. Definitely.

I have tomorrow off, but I kind of want to get up at my regular time anyway (that is, 5 AM) just so that I can go for a run. But that's kind of a nutso idea, and I don't think I'd stick to it anyway. ...But maybe if I bump it to 7, hmm. And depending on the weather. We'll see. The mornings have been so nice lately.

I. Have. So many things that I want to write, and it kind of makes me want to claw my face off. Last week I burnt myself out a little, because I was pushing myself really hard to finish something, and I think it took up what juice I had. So, hopefully I'll manage to get through something this weekend. There are exchange fics that need to get done, and finished drafts that I want to edit, and... yeah. Way too many wips. I'm drowning in them. Not as planned.

Gaaah. A to-do under the cut, because I'm feeling frazzled-

For the weekend )

WELL. Today was... busy! But nice.

Ran downtown to get my passport photos taken, since I need to send in for a renewal in August. The place that does them is kind of out of the way, so that took up more time than I would've liked. But, it wasn't too bad. At least it's done. :D

While the photos were developing, I poked around online and discovered that there is a geocache in a park near the photo joint. Soooo, for about an hour, I tramped around, peeking into evergreen trees like a weirdo. :D It was good fun, though I didn't find the cache - I unfortunately don't have a GPS-enabled device, and that makes everything a lot harder. Especially when the hint is that it's in an evergreen tree... and the park is full of evergreen trees... xD And it doesn't help that I wasn't dressed for this kind of thing at all. I'll probably try again with this one, but next time, I'm going to wear proper clothing. And bug spray.

Mayyybe I'll buy a handheld GPS eventually, if I decide to stick with this. Hell, it could come in handy when travelling, too! But for now, I think I'll just make do with what I have available to me. No need to go slapping down cash when I'm new to the hobby, after all.

Anyway! I've booked all my stuff for Victoria. So, I'll be going there in late August. Fun! It'll be nice to head down there again; the weather is always so nice. Not to mention... so many bookshops. I'll also be meeting up with Aki from SSSS/Hetalia fandom, and I'm sure that will turn out great. Though we'll be in the same city, we won't be rooming together; I think it'll be nice to hang out with somebody without being glued to them. We haven't decided exactly what we're going to do together, but there's so much cool stuff in Victoria, I'm sure we'll have no problem figuring something out.

Finally managed to get to the library. <3 It feels SO GOOD to be able to go there. I'm so glad that it's open again. And of course, I picked up a few things. Had to grab some things for research... I have some vague ideas for a fic that takes place in the SSSS universe, but rather than being set in the Nordic countries, this will take place in northern Alberta, specifically in Fort Chipewyan. I'm really excited about this idea, but it's going to require a lot of research. Honestly, I'm not quite sure where to start, haa. But anyway, I picked up a couple of books about the Dene people; one is a history, and the other is centred around folklore/oral stories/personal histories. Hopefully I'll at least get an idea of where to go with the worldbuilding from here. Aaand if not... the library has plenty more. :D

Aaaand I also picked up my new Kobo today. orz Really wish I hadn't dropped my old one the way I did... I hate touch-screens, and transferring everything is going to be a pain, blah blah blah bah humbug. Though, I'll confess that I've wanted a new one for a while, because the old one was kind of a pain in the ass in some ways (nonstandard cord made charging inconvenient) but fffffu. Going to have to make double-sure that I don't drop this one, geeze.

✿ A lot of things in this world are pretty awful right now. It's getting to the point where I just don't know what to say, really.

✿ I had Plans for this evening, but they kind of fell through due to accidentally falling asleep. I really need to stop doing this! It just ends up with me feeling groggy and awful. I was going to do things, I was going to write, I was going to - well, never mind.

✿ Think I've mentioned before that I was kind of interested in getting into geocaching. Well, today I actually looked into it, and wow... it turns out that there are actually several geocaches in my city. Nice! I was able to locate one that seems like it'll be easily accessible, so some time in the near future, I'm going to try this whole geocaching thing out and see if I like it. It'd be awesome if I could stick with it. (And hey, maybe this is something I could do when I'm in Victoria, too...)

✿ Keep looking at my to-do list for the weekend and feeling like, ugh, I don't want to do anything. I just want to curl up in the basement and read and not come out. But these passport photos won't get done that way. And I really should get to the library... there's a story I want to write that will have to be set locally, and if I can get some on-paper resources for it, that'll be best.
