Came across a delightful discussion of Fitzjames and Crozier's sweaters, and whether the sweater they're wearing is actually the same one. As well as a response that I found interesting as well.

:D And in the end, we still don't know if it's the same sweater, but the thought that Crozier would keep Fitzjames' sweater as a memento is sure a nice thought.

I just love the microfocus on detail, the overanalyzing of every possible screencap. This kind of meta is always so fun. It's so nice when I come across this kind of thing.

On the subject of Crozier and Fitzjames, ahhh the Captain and Commander Crozier/Fitzjames zine is available now, and I'm totally glad. Will have to set aside some cash from it. It's really too bad that I don't have room for more doujinshi, because this looks like a really nicely put-together fanbook. Ah, well. Digital-only it is! The price is a little bit steep for a digital work, but since the proceeds will benefit Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, I'm not going to grump about it. :D

And since I'm on the subject of The Terror, I'll mention - I've finished reading Ken McGoogan's Dead Reckoning, and I would suggest this one to anyone interested in the Franklin Expedition in particular, or the search for the Northwest Passage in general. I'll post about it in more detail later, but needless to say - a good read.

So, I finished watching The Terror a few days ago. Good stuff! I found the ending very satisfying. Not too much or too little of anything. Considering the way the novel drew the ending out too much (among other things), I find this solution really fits.

Anyway - like I've mentioned previously, it's very good. Well worth a watch if you enjoy perilous expeditions + arctic stuff + a dash of horror. (There are things I liked about the book, but I don't recommend it, really.)

The series changed a lot of things; one thing I appreciate a lot is the difference in how they approached Cornelius Hickey's character.

Continued; spoilers for the later half of the series )

I think that's all I have to say about the main series for now, unless something occurs to me later.

As for the second season, which will be airing in 2019... It sounds interesting, but I must admit, it seems kind of weird that they would go in this direction. An anthology series, with seasons completely unconnected to each other.... If the first season of The Terror had been an original thing, it would make more sense; but since it was an adaptation, it seems like an odd decision.

(Plus, keeping the title... I can see reasons for doing that, but also reasons it could have been changed, or for season 2 to be its own series rather than anything connected to this. It isn't just called The Terror because it's a horror series, gdi. Oh, well.)

It does sound pretty good, though. I'll probably watch it eventually. Though, since it won't be set in the polar regions or during the age of sail, it'll probably take me longer to get around to it.

Came across a list of fic recs for The Terror. Yay! Guess this saves me the trouble of digging through things. ;)

I haven't read any of these yet, mind you, so I can't vouch for them myself. But hopefully I'll get around to them soon - I'm curious.

Going to copy these directly to this entry for convenience's sake - the Anon links in the FFA thread aren't clickable, but these will be.

SO, uh-
Nearly finished the series now (just one and a half more episodes to go) and... I ended up kind of shipping Crozier/Blanky. Which is surprising. After reading the novel, I was totally on the Crozier/Fitzjames boat, but what we get of Crozier and Blanky's relationship in the TV series is just so good! Especially everything with them halfway through ep 09, that's the good stuff (even if the circumstances are horrible).

Also, this series isn't half as graphic as I was expecting. Or maybe it's just on account of the differences in the novel and the screen version, hmm. A lot of the, um, visceral horror comes through really, really well in the text, probably because your brain fills a lot of things in.

Also-also, the series makes up for a hell of a lot of the novel's shortcomings, and I'm so glad for that. While there were a lot of things I liked about the book, there sure were a lot of things I disliked too, and most of those are eliminated in this version.

One thing that I would have liked would be... more Bridgens/Peglar. Or at least a clearer illustration of the relationship. I've seen people in discussions who didn't realize that they are indeed in a romantic relationship; or at least, it isn't as clear in the series as it is in the novel - in the book version of course, we get their thoughts, so there's no doubt. But it isn't quite as easy to see it in the show.

...Though it doesn't help that it's difficult to tell a lot of the characters apart in this series, haa. I have no trouble identifying Bridgens, because I find he has a memorable face (rather handsome too I would say; I really should look up some other stuff that John Lynch is in, just so I can look at him, heh), but I can usually only identify Peglar by the way Bridgens acts toward him. This series can be kind of challenging if you have trouble figuring out who is who. xD

☆ I think perhaps that the holidays were So Busy that by now, I'm thoroughly socialized-out. Including internet things. Who'd have thought. I just want to curl up with a book and... not... talk to anybody at all. Or hibernate, maybe. (Please say it's not just me?)

☆ I didn't know Ravelry had a Project Challenge - but they sure do. A bit like the Goodreads reading challenge, but for knitting projects (obviously). Neat! I've set mine to finish 3, which I think is low enough to be realistic but high enough to be a challenge, knowing my tendency to get distracted and not finish projects for ages.

☆ While tidying up, I came across two large balls of yarn. No labels, no nothing! They're worsted acrylic and beyond that I have no earthly clue. I think that I might have intended to do a trial run of Quandary Peak Mittens; I know that at one point, I wanted to make them, but was not confident in my mitten-knitting abilities, and didn't want to waste good yarn on them. Hmmm... Something for the challenge, maybe? ;)

☆ Reminder: Signups for Chocolate Box are open until the end of January 07th (details here). I see a lot of great requests already. :D Come join us? ...I should probably add more things to my prompts before signups close. I mean, there's enough to work with, but they're a bit sparse compared to other years. :Va

☆ There is a new comm for The Terror series: [community profile] theterror. And when I say 'new' what I actually mean is 'new as of today'. Perhaps of interest to some? ...And no, I haven't watched the series yet (I know, I know.) Honestly, I think I will just borrow the discs from the library, so I can watch it on my main computer instead of having to fuss with other devices. That would probably be best.

☆ Last night was very relaxing: good tea, knitting, and listening to some classical music and such. I feel the need to note it down because - well, it isn't every day that things are just so... nice.

So, I finally got around to watching The Terror, or at least the first episode of it. I don't think this is a series I would want to binge, because it's rather bleak (then again, anything about the Franklin expedition would be). I get the impression that the entire series has been leaked, but I'm going to be watching it bit by bit as it becomes available - I have access to the first four right now.

Just as I expected, it's VERY pretty - at least, if your aesthetic leans toward ships, ice, arctic sea, and misery. HELL YES.

Even in the first episode, it's clear that they aren't following the book directly; it's a rather loose adaptation. I already sort of knew this, but it's nice to confirm it for myself. And I'm glad for it, because while there were parts of the novel that I liked very much, there are other bits that definitely weren't great, so... Since they aren't following it very closely anyway, hopefully this was seen as an opportunity to improve on the original.

(Also, apparently people are shipping Silence/Goodsir? HUH... Well, it certainly DOES look like there were some changes. :Va I will have to see about this when I watch the later parts.)

I quite like the dynamic built up between Crozier and Fitzjames; they're full of contrasts and it's fun to watch them pick at each other. "You should cherish that man." Pfff. Oh, Franklin, seriously....

Anyway! Looking forward to the rest of it, yes. :D But I'm glad that it's rather short. Ten episodes sounds perfect. Though, I hear it will have a second season, which seems... weird. I guess I'll have to wait until the end to decide how I feel about the idea of that.

...Also I must say, I find Tobias Menzies very attractive as Fitzjames, even more than I expected to. Oh dear. :D How lucky for me that he has a rather good amount of screentime. I think I'm going to enjoy this series very much, at least in terms of visuals.

☆ Holy shit, it's -4C. Praise be. I am so going to go on a long walk this afternoon - if I can get my lazy self together. Time to enjoy the sun. <3

☆ Is anybody thinking about participating in [community profile] screenexchange? I was going to hold off doing any exchanges until Multifandom Drabble, but this one is having a drabble round before the typical 1k minimum round, so that's interesting. Signups start on the 10th, so now is a good time to toss in noms if necessary. I threw a few in so that I'll have enough options to request/offer in case I do decide to do it.

☆ I have successfully managed to resist succumbing to the temptation of buying more yarn. Hooray. No progress on that scarf I've been working on, mind you - the pattern is way too complicated for me to manage while watching anything with subtitles, so I had to put it on hold. We'll see how quickly it'll go now - as long as I don't fuck up my wrists again. (Let's not bet on the chances of that, I'm my own worst enemy.)

☆ The upcoming week is going to be so busy and I'm really not looking forward to it. Long shifts + giving up my weekend to do a first aid course. I'm looking forward to the course, especially since I won't have to pay for it (my employer is footing the bill. SWEET) but I expect that I'm going to be very, very tired by the time everything is done.

☆ Now that I'm finished with NiF, I'll probably tackle The Terror... some of the spoilers I've seen have me really interested. Lady Silence can speak in this one, which is a significant departure from the novel. I knew that her actress had speaking roles, but I guess I had assumed it was internal monologue voiceover stuff. Anyway, it makes me wonder about what other changes were made. It'll be interesting to compare it to the novel.

☆ What do you mean I can't just stay home and watch Nirvana in Fire all day? (Well, even if I had the time for it, it'd be a terrible idea - I'd get terribly sore from watching television for so long - but. You know what I mean.) ...Should whip up some icons later, eventually, once I'm finished the series. Which won't be for a while, because I only just finished ep 9 today, but I'm really enjoying it and looking forward to whatever emotional rollercoaster this drama will bring me.

☆ The Terror premiers on the 26th. However am I going to wait? (I'LL MANAGE SOMEHOW). Actually, I haven't quite figured out how I'm going to watch this series. Certainly not on the television. ...Ugh, I'll have to figure that out later.

☆ I've discovered that I'm not a huge fan of knitting with lace-weight yarn. Or perhaps it's just this particular yarn. Or this particular pattern. Hmm. MORE DATA IS NEEDED. Maybe I'm just disgruntled because it isn't easy to work on this lace scarf and watch NiF at the same time. :D

☆ ...I was going to say more, but it's been a long week. I'm exhausted. I'm looking forward to sleeping in and doing nothing tomorrow. Of course, by "sleeping in and doing nothing" what I actually mean it sleeping in until 7 AM and going to the library later. And so on. Very exciting. ;p

*_* So, I discovered that there is a TV series being made about the Franklin expedition. More accurately, the Franklin expedition + monsters.

It's called The Terror, and it's coming out in March.

Trailer is over here: voila

It's based on a novel; The Terror by Dan Simmons. The library has it, and I am so going to have to read this. And watch the series, of course.

It's hard to communicate how excited I am about this - the trailer looks so good! Hopefully the actual series will be just as cool. The only issue is that I might not be able to watch it as it comes out... I do terribly with television, really.

WELL at least I know what I'll check out on my next library trip, now... *_*
