/slaps a gold "I TRIED" star on everything

The thing about the Duo forums is that occasionally people will reply to you in a language that you're learning, especially if you have a high level in one of them. And usually I'm too nervous to answer in Norwegian, but today I figured, why not. It was in a conversation about using newspapers for learning, so I knew most of the words that I needed anyway (...mostly), which helped.

I suppose it also helps when you are so bored during your work lunch that you suddenly lose inhibitions and cease to be embarrassed if you make mistakes. ;) One of the things that keeps me from writing in Norwegian is "Oh no, I'll make mistakes, how embarrassing!" Though probably an even bigger thing is that a lot of the time I don't know all of the words for what I want to say, so I keep having to look stuff up, so it takes five minutes to write a single sentence... Ah, well. Practice, practice, practice. ;V

Also: I discovered that the Norsk course is one of the longest courses on that site; perhaps even the actual longest. Which explains a few things about why it has taken me forever to get to my current position, haha.

Not quite sure how correct the NO version is, since I had to look up a lot of things, but ehhhh at least an attempt was made.

IN other words, I finished the konmari job in my desk. For the time being, anyway. My ex's drawings are dumped in the recycling along with certain early fanfiction that will never see the light of day. ;p Not sure what to do with the folders of my own artwork, but since they don't take up much space, I'm content to let them sit in the bottom drawer for now.

I keep opening the drawers and looking into them, all amazed at how tidy they are, haha. xD We had a few sandwich-sized tupperware containers that lost their lids, so I've appropriated them for my desk - they turned out to be the perfect size for my miscellaneous cords and chargers and SD cards.

And now that I've found my pencil crayons I kind of feel like drawing... or at least colouring, since I came across some colouring books too. Maybe that'll be a nice way to turn my brain off. ;)

Summary: I don't remember any French, Norwegian is a nightmare, and some days I can barely remember how to speak English. WHY ON EARTH am I trying to learn two other languages?! I should be brushing up on English grammar instead.

(Seriously, my English is B-A-D, sometimes it's pretty embarrassing.)

Man, even writing that much was like pulling teeth. I really need to get back into Norwegian. I've been lazy. Partly it's because Duolingo hasn't been running easily on my computer for some reason, so I haven't even been doing the most halfassed "studying" imaginable. And partly I've just been busy with other stuff. I have no energy for anything that requires brain power.

In a conversation about Kalevala translations, a friend suggested I learn Finnish... HAHA, NO. No, that is not a project that I want to take on, thank you. Beautiful language, but no.

But on the subject of "languages that start with F", French is... something I should take up again. And I keep saying this every time I make a language entry. But a trip to France in 2017 is starting to sound possible. Or maybe 2018. Whichever. Either way, a refresher will probably make my life easier. But then again, who knows.

✿ Watched Ex Machina with the movie gang Saturday night. We usually do horror movies, so this was a bit of a departure, but a good one. I've seen it before, but watching it again was a pleasure. It's such a good movie. And I must admit, I love the visuals. ... There needs to be more Ava/Kyoko fic out there, seriously. *_* There's a little, but I want moooore. They don't have many scenes together in the film, but what they do have is so intense, I love it so much.

✿ It's supposed to be raining all day, which on the one hand is kind of gloomy, but on the other, it's probably best that I stay in, because there are so many things I should have done yesterday that I neglected to do. ...And this is on account of randomly falling asleep in the middle of the afternoon. Can this heat go away, please?! This happens every time. Maybe I should just cave and incorporate siesta into my weekend schedule. :T

✿ Finished that Hetalia + Mad Max crossover that I was working on aaaand finally posted it [at archive and ao3]. Probably could have tinkered with it a little more, but I've tinkered with it a lot as it is, and any other changes I'd make would just be fussy stuff. I was nervous about posting it publicly, because posting anywhere outside my archive always makes me nervous, but Anneliese read it and reassured me that there's nothing to worry about here. It's the first APH + MM fic on Ao3 and FFNet, which surprises me because I would have thought Hetalia fandom would latch on to Mad Max the way they latched on to some other series. I guess not. Come to think of it, mainly I see fusions in Hetalia fandom, rather than straight-up crossovers with nation-compatible canons, much to my disappointment.

✿ Writing Australia was a challenge, though. He's such a pain in the ass. One would think that since he has a little bit of space in Hetalia canon, it would be better than nothing, but no. The voice in the translations isn't distinct enough to come to any conclusions, and since he doesn't have many scenes, well... I pretty much have to do my best and see what happens. BUT Anneliese said that I wrote him okay, so. <3 Maybe I'll do more with him in the future, I don't know.

Tl;dr: Whenever I need to study, I have to leave the house because there's too much noise here, and it's a pain in the ass because my books + laptop are both heavy. ALSO I should probably put a norsk bokmål spellcheck on this thing. My spelling is mostly fine, but those red lines under everything are so annoying.

☆ Watching films in Swedish is always a weird experience because I understand some things, and don't understand some others, and then there are other-other things that I feel I should understand but don't, and it's just plain weird. Such a cute language, though. ...Anyway. I watched Ingmar Bergman's Persona last night, and it is a deeply weird movie. There were some things about it that did interest me, but it was so strange that I would not recommend it to anyone because it's just -- so weird. Go watch The Seventh Seal instead, that one is amazing.

☆ Going to start reading A Redtail's Dream tonight, probably. It's been on the to-do list for a while so, why not. Especially since I ordered the print version of Sundberg's other comic, Stand Still, Stay Silent. ... Ffffff I wish that project would go more quickly, speaking of SSSS, because I want to read it really badly, but I don't want to read it online. OH WELL. (I think I've mentioned this before)

☆ Tried to write. Managed to get a few things done, but not nearly enough. My brain just wouldn't settle, so the amount that I could get down was negligible. Not good. Deadlines... they're coming closer. D:

Yesterday (09 April) was the 75th anniversary of the Nazi invasion of Norway. So, this meant that there was a lot of interesting stuff flying around the internet relating to that.

... And of course, most of it was in Norwegian. I certainly got a lot of practice, even if it was a frustrating experience and I still have so much difficulty reading anything, let alone articles relating to serious historical events.

A few things I came across (mooostly stuff from Aftenposten, I haven't poked around much beyond that because there's so much stuff) - I can't read most of them very well, but as my Norwegian improves I might be able to understand them better, so these are for my own reference, I suppose.

I have a lot of difficulty understanding the NRK recording, even though the broadcaster speaks very clearly, because my listening skills for Norwegian are so poor. But, for me, it's one of the most interesting pieces I've come across so far. I saw the link in a discussion thread on ffa (here) and the anon who posted it did a translation. So, at least I know what's being said.

I've started watching the Star Wars films. Going in the order they were filmed, because why not. The film that's coming out in 2015 looks like something I might want to see in cinema, so I might as well... go through the backlog.

No, really! I haven't seen most of them! Except for The Phantom Menace (which I loved) and Attack of the Clones (which I didn't) when they were in cinema. Other than that... I just never got around to watching the older films, since they weren't A Thing in my parents' household when I was growing up, and there's so much stuff out there I haven't seen....

Anyway. The first one was all right. It's kind of strange to know all the references, but at the same time be seeing them for the first time. Mostly, what I'm impressed by is the fact that for the most part, the special effects and other visuals still look good. Old, yes, but not bad.

And then, there's another thing entirely that I have my eye on. Kampen om tungtvannet, AKA "The Heavy Water War". It's a Norwegian miniseries about the Norwegian heavy water sabotage during WWII, and obviously it's very relevant to my interests.

It's been picked up by the BBC, but it hasn't been subtitled yet. So here I am, trying to decide whether to go ahead and watch it or... not. My command of the Norwegian language is, frankly, terrible. But this looks so exciting and I'm impatient! And it would be good practice! At least if I could manage to understand anything. But I would prefer to watch a version that I can understand, first....
