+ Work has been super busy lately. And also there were quite a few days where I had to do everything by myself because my coworker was absent. It's not a big deal but I sure do feel Tired (TM). On the upside, my boss seems happy with my performance. We're heading toward my 1-year anniversary at my job, so it's good to know that she thinks I'm doing well.

+ Note To Self: Make a post about books when you have a moment. Because I do have some things to say about books. (Stuff read recently + library's upcoming challenge)

+ Went to a free yoga class yesterday. It was at a studio I've heard good things about, and was organized through our local pride org. It was quite nice! Very good facilities actually, and the instructor was great. I'm glad I went! Much less intense than what I would usually do at home, but giving it some thought, a gentle workout was probably what I needed after doing judo class that morning. Will have to see if I can shuffle the schedule to find a good time to try one of their other classes, because while I can do it at home as time allows, I think it might also be beneficial to me to do some in-person guided stuff.

+ I think I've been overscheduling myself again. I'm looking at my calendar and there are so many things on it, and they are all things that I want to do and am excited about, but at the same time I'm like "Nooooo :c". Over the next month I'm going to a lecture at the library, a pride coffee meetup, a different pride meetup, a pride craft session, a pride potluck, AND I'll be going to Edmonton for several days as well and doing a whole bunch of things there (including going to 2 concerts and 1 wine festival). ...Plus judo three times per week. I, uh, I think I'll need to cut back once all these events are finished. It's just kind of difficult to find a balance between "all these fun things are happening" and "I want to get out and Do Things More and exist in the community" and "I also need to rest and relax occasionally".

+ In light of the above, it's like, well shit. No wonder I haven't been writing much this year. I've been doing other stuff! (What a revelation.)

+ [DW Icons rec] 200 icons by [personal profile] nowhere in [community profile] insomniatic. Some autumn stuff, some spooky stuff, some animals, some general stock. I don't know if I'll use any of these myself but I thought they were quite nice and wanted to share.
yuuago: (ESC - Subwoolfer - Tourists)
I made some new ESC icons. Kicked Tix out since I was only using him at ESC time - perhaps Barei and Subwoolfer will be more multipurpose. And also deleted a few other icons that I rarely use. We'll see if I decide to reupload them later.

Also want to make a few others - mostly Poli Genova and Dami Im - but I wasn't able to find good screencaps, so I'll have to take those myself. That'll take more time.

I have a hugeass gallery of icons saved... It's interesting to see how my tastes have changed over the years.
yuuago: (Promare - Mad Burnish - With you)
+ Took today off because I Felt Like It. Plus I had to go to an appointment. (Didn't need the whole day for that, but like, figured I might as well....) Also, treated to myself to lunch, just because I could. Felt nice!

+ Repotted two of my plants. Two others got the boot - the pepperomia and the oyster plant are gonzo. I probably could have saved them, like I did last year when they were struggling, but I didn't feel motivated enough to make the effort. So, now I'm down to a christmas cactus and two snake plants. Not sure what I will replace the other two with. Last year I'd considered picking up one of the hens&chicks that the garden centre was selling, and just keep it as an indoor plant; I might end up actually doing that. It seems that plants that tolerate dryness and cold do well in my apartment.

+ Made lentil burgers. Used this recipe from Occasionally Eggs. Tasted pretty good; would make again. Next time I might mix it up a little - different spices, maybe include some diced bell pepper. Though, I really suck at making patties. Maybe that's something that comes with practice? I've only tried making burgers a few times.

+ Took the book version of Conclave out from the library. Looking forward to it. The movie was pretty good, but the nice thing about books is that you usually get more deeply into at least one character's head.

+ I was surprised to see a lot of people on the Latest Things page posting their first entry in a new journal. Turns out some people are considering making a jump from Tumblr to DW due to some issues going on over there (staff layoffs etc). Well, DW's a very different kind of site, but I hope they enjoy it. I think it would be a good match for people who like textposting.

+ Had a three-day weekend due to the stat holiday. Didn't get anywhere near as much rest as I would have liked, buuuuut it was still nice!

+ I'm super tired. I don't even know why. There's no reason for it! (Self, you know why: you spent Friday and Saturday running around, and then you spent most of today cleaning like a maniac.) ...Anyway, upside, I spent some of today talking to Tik, and later on I did get to relax, and watched not one but two horror movies this evening (which weren't as terrible as I expected), so overall it's All Good. :V

+ There are two Little Libraries in my town; one within walking distance, and one that I need to drive to. So, yesterday I went to take a look at the farther one. It's slightly larger; had a pretty good selection, too. Anyway - I'm glad that I know where it is now. It'll be nice to return the books I take from Nearby Library to the Second Library when I'm finished with them - so that they don't go to the same place twice.

+ Pride YMM - I forgot to mention in the entry about the board meeting, but just remembered - they're working on becoming a Registered Charity. Hopefully will happen next year. This is really exciting news, because it'll likely mean it'll be easier to get funding. Also, donations, probably (I know I'm more likely to donate to registered orgs 'cause you can claim it on taxes etc). Anyway, they need to rewrite some of their bylaws first, but it sounds like they have a clear roadmap. Wish I could help, but ha, definitely not my area of expertise.

+ Spent today reading through some stuff about Polish grammar. I now feel as if my brains have turned into sludge. Cases sure are a thing, eh. On the upside, I do feel a bit more confident in the possibility that I can learn how to read Polish eventually. Speak it? No, aside from canned tourist phrases - but then again I can't speak Norwegian either (I can read Norwegian, but not speak it). Anyway... I didn't absorb much of it, but since we're just getting started, I'm not too fussed about that. It did clarify some things that I stumbled over when poking at it on Duolingo, so that was helpful. Can't remember the specifics, but it was case-related, which is not a surprise in hindsight.

+ It's so damn dry over here. In retaliation I've slathered myself in as much moisturiser as possible, and now I feel like a shea-scented slug. There's just no way to win, is there. :V

+ My thoughts on DW's beta inbox and post entry page are "Ew, it looks different". I'll get used to it eventually (and will have to, since it's due to go out of beta soon...ish), and functionally everything seems to be working fine for me, but. It sure does look different. :V

+ I hope you all had a good weekend!

+ [community profile] scanfic is a DW comm for Scandinavian fanworks and fandom discussion; posting is allowed in Scandinavian languages and in English. I hope this comm takes off; I'll probably be a lurkbeast as usual, but even the small amount of discussion posted so far has given me valuable language practice. (I've been neglecting Norwegian so much... /o\)

+ Today was exhausting. I was out the door at 7:30 for a blood draw appointment that my dumb ass scheduled for 8 AM, and it just kept going from there. I was running around doing errands all day, and then had to go help out with a judo fundraiser because most of the people who'd usually do it weren't available... Didn't get home until close to 5. I am beat. x_x

+ And tomorrow I get to run around again! For more appointments, more life stuff, and more fundraising. orz. (Why can't it be another long weekend? Aughhh)

+ One of my friends is running a Gofundme to pay for some unexpected vet bills for her cat. If anyone could throw a few bucks her way, I'm sure she'd appreciate it.

Came across this blog post about Twitter users moving to Mastodon (and then a lot of them having a difficult experience with Mastodon): Why did the #TwitterMigration fail?

Thought it was interesting. I'm unlikely to use Mastodon for a whole lot of the reasons outlined in the post. I gave it a look for half a second, and thought, "Nah". I can see why some people might like it, but it's not for me.

Right now I'm kind of thinking, though - some of the same stuff might apply to attempts at moving from Tumblr to DW. I see it happen a lot, and it rarely sticks. I wouldn't be surprised if the reasons for that are similar: harder to find things due to the format, smaller amount of stuff going on, more tinkering required, etc. Though there is a major difference - with Twitter and Mastodon, you're going from one microblogging system to another. With Tumblr and Dreamwidth, you're going from an image-based microblogging site to a text-based longform journal site. That's gotta' be quite a change for someone who's not used to it.

It's also why Tumblr fandom is unlikely to jump from there to here. I've seen some stir-ups and attempts recently due to some UI changes Tumblr is experimenting with, but as always, I'm like... "Good luck, and I'll believe it when I see it".
yuuago: (Lithuania - Busy)
I've been seeing rumblings about people wanting to post on DW more. Kick up a little activity around here. My thoughts on that, as always, are "I'll believe it when I see it". I expect, as usual, that it'll be a bit busy for a few weeks before it fizzles out. (But if my expectations prove incorrect, I'll of course be pleasantly surprised!)

I've also seen people talking about using it as an alternate fic posting platform. As a matter of course, all my stuff goes up over at [personal profile] roesslyng, and I do really like posting here in terms of formatting - I prefer uploading fic here rather than Ao3. The downside is that there's no way to gauge response - over on Ao3, people might not have anything to say, but they're willing to slap the kudos button even if they don't have an account. And of course there are bookmarks and stats and whatnot. There's no equivalent to that over here on DW, and even when Anon is turned on, people don't make use of it for commenting.

This isn't an issue for me per se, because I typically don't care so much, and a lot of the writing that I post on DW is scribbles and bite-sized things that I wrote as exercises, nothing special. But occasionally, I do write something that I want to share more widely, and... what to do in that case? Hell if I know.

In the meantime, I'm just going to continue as usual, I guess.

So how about Dreamwidth's fetching backend, eh?

I suppose I don't mind all that much - at a few points, it did give me motivation to go do something else.

(I say, as I write this entry instead of doing the dishes. But at one point, I solemnly swear I did some writing, too!)

All jokes aside, at least they're aware of the issue.

+ We had a snow-free Halloween, which is always weird. But a couple days after that we had a good amount of snow, and today it was close to -20C, so things are feeling a little bit more normal now. Finally got my snow tires on today, so at least I'm not slipping and sliding everywhere. Hooray.

+ It's nice to see more people posting on DW lately. We'll see how long this lasts - there's always a burst of activity when there's some social media dust-up or other, but due to Dreamwidth being so specific, it doesn't usually end up sticking. Too bad, really.

+ My brain has been absolutely fried lately. Would blame it on the time change, but it was like that before. Could be a seasonal change thing. It's really throwing off my groove! Anybody else experiencing the same?

+ Going to be heading down to Calgary to visit relatives soon. Haven't seen them since 2018 or so. It'll be nice! Might get some shopping in, too. I'm looking forward to the trip, but not so much the 9-hour drive (ew).

+ Came across more white supremacy stickers while I was out and about this weekend. It was the same handmade style as the stuff I found pasted up last year, so I'm going to assume it was the same people putting it up. Tore it down, but since I was in a hurry, I didn't get a chance to go around the neighbourhood and see if there were any more up anywhere that needed to come down. Will have to make a note to do that when I have the time.

If you're looking for nonfandom icons, I suggest taking a look at [community profile] fancylittleboxes!

There are some fandom icons on that comm as well, but the nonfandom ones beat them out by a large number.

I'm not familiar with the user who makes them; I just really like his work a lot. His sense of style really works for me.

Holy shit, DW rolled out a way to do cuts in comments. Also applies to hiding spoilers in entries, but the main thing here is that it works in comments. I know that there were a lot of methods people came up with to do this, but it's nice to finally have a simple and clean way to do it that's directly built in.

Info is in the latest code tour; scroll down to Issue 2887 for deets. Looks like the FAQ hasn't been updated yet to reflect the change.

Just going to copy the code for it over here for my reference -

Anyway, I tried it out in a comment to myself, and it works! Hooray!

MAN you know, I was thinking about an idea for a DW comm. But I don't want to moderate it, I just want it to exist. So I can post to it. Maybe. Eventually. Once every 2.5 years. And the concept of moderating it is like, "ew how about no, ugh work, no thank you".

Because moderating is a lot of work. Even if it's a low-key thing! Because like, not only do you have to deal with any issues that might come up, and hand-hold anybody who doesn't understand how stuff works, you also (and to some degree, more Importantly?) have to be super proactive about Posting Stuff and Encouraging Things if you want to have any level of activity and make the place look like it isn't dead.

I remember back when I was running a prompt fest, I would get people coming to me like, "Posting is open, but nobody's posting??"

And I'd be like "Yes, it looks like nobody has finished their submission yet; but if you're done, you can post it! :)!"

And after the first two times that happened I just. Made sure to finish my own assignment ahead of time before posting opened. So I could post it first. Because people don't want to post when there's nobody else posting, I guess.

And DW comms in general (and LJ comms to a degree, to be fair) is one big "nobody wants to post when nobody else is posting, so nobody posts".

WHICH BRINGS ME BACK TO the thing I was Going to say, which is, DW comm mods, being a mod is hard, I Appreciate You.

(Even if I don't post to your comm :V )

June 25 and 26 is Rarepair Hell Weekend here on Dreamwidth! Event details here.

The premise: Do something related to a rarepair you love. Comment on a work, write something new, whatever. Then comment in the entry above to say what you did. (And link to whatever it is you enjoyed or created, I'm assuming.)

This sounds like a really fun low-pressure event. I'll have to see if I can throw something together!
yuuago: (Netherlands - Oh?)
I find it very surprising when I hear about people from Twitter moving to Dreamwidth. It's nice to have more people around, but they're very different sites! Microblogging vs longform journaling; a lot of text on both, but very different.

I think of Dreamwidth as falling into the "personal diary site" niche. Open Diary -> Livejournal -> Dreamwidth was a natural progression for me, from one diary site to another.

I know a lot of people used LJ/DW for fandom, but to this day I still don't think of either of them that way - or at least not primarily.

+ There seems to be a DW event going around for this month in which people post about stuff they love. It doesn't seem to be a formal thing with a comm and whatnot; rather, it looks almost like a meme. Anyway, I just think that's such a nice idea. Maybe I'll see if I can put together some rec posts or something. (If I can find the energy...)

+ Bandcamp Friday is coming up on Feb 04*. That's the deal where Bandcamp waives its share of the revenue on the first Friday of the month, and everything purchased on that day goes to the artists. I keep losing track of when these are, so it's nice to be able to mark it on the calendar. It's been a while since I bought some new music, but I'm definitely pre-purchasing Ibibio Sound Machine's new album - the preview tracks alone are amazing.

+ Hetalia news: Himaruya posted a character design for Ireland*! And ROI seems to be in the latest Jump strip, too*, though as usual the strip is so chaotic that I won't be able to figure out what's going on until the translation is posted. I'm kind of so-so about the design; I like the red hair, but unsure about the rest. (Okay, I'll be honest, I'm a little disappointed that his clothes are unremarkable - ROI's illustration is the same format as the UK bros set, and they all got stylish outfits. Come on, Himaruya, stuff Ireland in some fancy duds! Ah, well.)

Potentially useful: A guide for requesting art in exchanges by [personal profile] chacusha.

It's a pretty thorough run-down of what kind of information is helpful in art requests. Details that are useful for a fic writer aren't necessarily something that an artist can use.

Of course, since it's just one artist's thoughts on the thing, it's a 'your mileage may vary' post, but most of the things on this list are suggestions I've seen in other discussions.

I don't do fanart, but I enjoy it a lot, so I do request it most of the time in applicable exchanges. Usually I don't have much difficulty figuring out what to request, but it'll be helpful to have a list of things to keep in mind so I can up my chances of receiving an art gift. ;V

Three things make a post:

☆ Snapped off one of the prongs on my block heater's plug this evening while I was unplugging it from the extension cord. Oh boy. And it's probably going to be close to -30C tomorrow, too. Again. Dad says it'll be easy to fix/replace this, which... I hope so, because when it's this damn cold, I really would rather not have to replace the block heater. And I rather like being able to start my car, and all that. ;V

[community profile] cookbook_challenge is a neat little comm. If you have a recipe that you bookmarked ages ago and never got around to trying out, the goal is to... get around to trying it out. I have a ton that have been on the backburner, so maybe this'll give me incentive to actually get around to trying them.

☆ First impression of Gideon the Ninth: 50 pages in, I'm still not sure if I'll love it or hate it, but I find it engrossing so far, so there is that. It's gloomy and flippant at the same time, and I'm not sure how to feel about it! Mad props to whoever designed the physical hardcover book - the pages are black-edged and it's incredibly striking.
yuuago: (Norway - Coffee)
[community profile] recthething is a new fanwork reccing comm. You can post recs, and you can ask for recs. Multifandom, all pairings/ratings/etc welcome, all fanwork mediums OK.

It doesn't have the restrictions that some other reccing comms have. For example, WIPS are OK, the work doesn't have to be recent, and you can rec work by your friends.

I'm going to have to see about crossposting some things over there.
yuuago: (SweNor - Get lucky)
[community profile] holiday_wishes: Post a wishlist! Get your wishes granted! Grant wishes for others! Can be fandom-related things or nonfandom (or a mix of both). Posting guidlines + rules. Posting of wishlists will be open until the end of 2019.

[community profile] in_a_peartree: Post a list of requests (your "tree"), and others will fill it with gifts ("pears"). Cute! Requests are open until Dec 01. I've heard it compared to the In Small Packages event, which I haven't participated in. Rules & request post here. Haven't decided if I'll put up a request list, but I'll definitely be looking at what others are asking for.

Signups for [community profile] mini_wrimo are open now.

It's a writing fest in November, in which you commit to writing every day, and then report your progress to the comm every day. You set your own wordcount goal - it doesn't have to be the same as NaNoWriMo's huge-ass 50K goal. 100 words per day is fine.

Might be of interest to some of you? :)

I've done this in the past, and I liked the whole "accountability, yay!" angle. But I realized that trying to slap down a certain amount of words every day is Not For Me, even if it's only 100 words. I'm way too tired after work to manage that.
