+ [community profile] scanfic is a DW comm for Scandinavian fanworks and fandom discussion; posting is allowed in Scandinavian languages and in English. I hope this comm takes off; I'll probably be a lurkbeast as usual, but even the small amount of discussion posted so far has given me valuable language practice. (I've been neglecting Norwegian so much... /o\)

+ Today was exhausting. I was out the door at 7:30 for a blood draw appointment that my dumb ass scheduled for 8 AM, and it just kept going from there. I was running around doing errands all day, and then had to go help out with a judo fundraiser because most of the people who'd usually do it weren't available... Didn't get home until close to 5. I am beat. x_x

+ And tomorrow I get to run around again! For more appointments, more life stuff, and more fundraising. orz. (Why can't it be another long weekend? Aughhh)

+ One of my friends is running a Gofundme to pay for some unexpected vet bills for her cat. If anyone could throw a few bucks her way, I'm sure she'd appreciate it.

PSA: [personal profile] petra is offering to sponsor OTW memberships. If you want to vote in the upcoming OTW board election but find the membership fee too steep for any reason at all, this person is willing to spot you the 10 USD, no questions asked. More info over here; comments to that entry are screened, so you can leave your email for further discussion about the paypal transfer.

There are a lot of slots still available, so if you are interested in voting but need a hand, do consider it!

You have until 19:59 EST on June 30 to get an OTW membership if you want to vote.

As for me, I did end up getting a membership after all. ...This'll probably end up being like how I paid to vote for the Hugos that one time due to drama and then never again. But like. Whatever. :V

[personal profile] sunflower_auction: A fandom charity auction in support of the people of Ukraine!

If you've participated in one of these before, you know how it goes. People sign up to do fic/art/beta reading/whatever; others bid on those offers. All money raised is donated directly to charity.

Signups for offers are open from now to May 10! More info over here.

Creator signups are open for this year's round of the Fandom Trumps Hate multifandom charity auction. They close on February 13th.

Can't find the tumblr post with the schedule for this year, but it's over at their Dreamwidth here.

I'm kind of bummed that I'll have to sit it out this year, but I know that Future Me will be grateful for that decision. Really looking forward to browsing week, though!

☆ There's a fandom charity auction going on now on DW to fundraise for organisations that support migrants/refugees/asylum seekers in the UK/Scotland: [community profile] noraidsauction. Options are both auction and BIN.

This is on a quick schedule. Offers open from May 14-19; bidding/BIN open from the 20th-24th. It's open to Dreamwidth users only. Currently undecided if I'll offer a slot, but if I do it'll be for quick-and-dirty canon-blind beta reading. (Anyone interested?)

☆ Mdou Moctar released the soundtrack to the film Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai|Rain the Colour of Blue with a Little Red in It. The film is biographical, about how Mdou Moctar made a name for himself in Niger's music scene; I might see if I can track it down.

Anyway, this music is his older stuff, which I haven't listened to much previously. But ahhh I wish I hadn't held off on that, because it's all excellent. Just as good as the newer work; the texture is slightly more raw, but I like that. Give it a listen if you love electric guitars.

☆ I suddenly recalled today that there are no mosquitoes in Iceland. Ordinarily, it's not a place that I particularly want to live. But sometimes, damn, is that dream ever tempting. (The mosquitoes aren't out over here yet, but it's just a matter of time.)

☆ Both [community profile] fandomtrumpshate and [community profile] fandomforoz are in browsing week right now! Yay!

AHH, I can hardly wait until bidding starts - I'm curious about how my own offers will do, but also there are so many auctions by other people that I'm interested in, it's going to be really hard to narrow it down. Every time I browse through the lists, I see something else that looks good!

☆ Bidding for Fandom For Australia opens on February 23rd. Main offerings blog is here. Taglist of all fandoms + creators is here.

☆ Bidding for Fandom Trumps Hate opens on February 24th. Main offering blog is [personal profile] fth2020offerings. Taglist of all fandoms + creators is here.

I've had a lot of fun working on auction fic in the past, and I've been really looking forward to this year too. :D Here's a condensed summary of what I'm offering:

Fandom For Australia: Yuuago's creator page

+ Fandoms: Hetalia, Stand Still Stay Silent, A Redtail's Dream, and anything else I've written before - so if you want me to write Frozen or VME or YOI or Ex Machina or Nirvana in Fire, you'll want to bid on one of my slots for this.

+ Details: Any characters, any pairings, any rating. No AUs*.
*Canon-divergent AUs are OK, especially for canons like NiF etc. But it's good to ask beforehand to make sure we're on the same page.

+ Offering 3 slots.
Slot 1: Short fanfic up to 2k.
Slot 2: Basic beta reading up to 5k.
Slot 3: Poetry up to 20 lines.

Fandom Trumps Hate: Yuuago's creator page

+ Fandoms: Hetalia, Stand Still Stay Silent, A Redtail's Dream

+ Details: Any characters, any pairings, any rating. No AUs.

+ Offering 3 slots, all for fic up to 5k.

So, that's that! If any of this sounds good, make sure to bookmark those offer pages and drop some bids on my stuff next week. ;)

☆ Norway trip is booked! Hooray! I'll be 15 days over there in August/September, if you exclude the flight days. And the cost wasn't as hellishly expensive as expected, probably because of booking early, which is pretty sweet. Right now I'm too overwhelmed to be properly excited, but I'm sure once I come down from that I'll be very pleased. ;)

☆ Offer signups for [community profile] fandomtrumpshate are still open until January 31st! More info over here. They have over 500 offers so far, apparently.

My offers for this will be 3 slots for fic up to 5k for aRTD, SSSS, or Hetalia; I'll post more info on that when it's available.

[community profile] fandomforoz is a fandom charity auction raising funds for people and wildlife affected by the Australian bushfires. It's run in a similar way to FTH; the main difference in the signup is that you only need to fill out the form once even if you're offering multiple slots. Signups for offers are open from now until Feb 08. If you know someone who might be interested, please let them know! FAQ | Signup info/form link

I'll be offering small-scope fanworks for this project. My offers for the Australia auction will be:
+ Fanfic up to 2k, any fandom I've written previously.
+ Poetry up to 20 lines, any fandom I've written previously.
+ Basic SPAG beta up to 5k, any fandom, any content.
If any of that sounds relevant to your interests, keep an eye out - I'll post more information when it's available.

Seven Steps To Moderating A Fanworks Exchange guide by [personal profile] muccamukk. Looks like there's lots of useful advice in here! Check it out if you're thinking about running an exchange and aren't sure where to start. ...Sometimes, I seriously consider it, but I don't think I would have the patience.

☆ Book rec: Welcome to the Pine Away Motel and Cabins by Katarina Bivald. It's told from the point of view of a ghost who tries to help her friends and family get back on track with their lives after her early death. Set in a small town in Oregon. Colourful cast of characters. I couldn't put this one down; stayed up late last night so that I could finish it, which is atypical for me. (I'm paying for it today, but I regret nothing.)

☆ [Exchanges] Chocolate Box assignments are out. I'm excited about mine! Already starting to brainstorm ideas for it. Hopefully I'll be able to come up with something really cute for my recip. :) I hope all of you who are doing it are happy with your assignment.

☆ [FTH auction] Signups for the Fandom Trumps Hate charity auction open on the 13th. I'm definitely planning to participate again - I'll have three fic slots open. Anybody else? Imagine if we brought its 4-year running total up to 100k. IMAGINE. We would have to raise around 27k, which is a lot, but I think it's possible. I'll be posting more info and trying to promote it around once more details are up, because I really hope that people in my fandoms will participate. I like writing fic for this, but it's also nice when there are people offering things that I can bid on. ;)

☆ [Books] Continuing with Cherryh's Chanur saga. Still enjoying it. I like that this series has some very... alien... aliens. The methane-breathers (especially the knnn, but the others as well) are so interesting and weird! Though it's possible that it's just a novelty for me because I don't read much scifi.

☆ [Fanart] Haranonaka has a tumblr for her Vinland Saga art now: here. Lovely as always. Nidsk has also been posting some very neat things since the anime aired. Man, I need to catch up on the manga - I've only read a couple volumes of it, but it's so good. Unfortunately, the library doesn't have it, though I could ILL it. Or I could watch the anime, though I don't stream via Amazon, so that might be a bit more challenging. ...I've heard it's so good that in either format it'll probably be worth jumping through hoops for, though. Anyway, go check out those artists if you like that series, their stuff is great.

☆ [Photography] Nils Nordenswan - I came across this guy's tumblr for original photography recently, and man, I love it. He mainly posts b&w Finnish landscapes. Some of the ones he's put up recently are really minimalistic and beautiful, I'd even say abstract.

☆ [Charity] Short comic by Cat's Cafe about the wildfires in Australia. The author notes at the bottom have links to various charities to help people & wildlife affected by the wildfires. Probably the same link list that has been floating around and everybody has already seen, but maybe some haven't seen it yet.

The news about the fire at Notre Dame de Paris yesterday was very upsetting. Apparently the damage is not as extensive as many had feared it would be (then again, the worst case scenario was that the entire building would be lost).

La Fondation du patrimoine, the French Heritage Foundation, has opened a fund for the restoration of Notre Dame. A lot of big names have already pledged toward the restoration as well. Since the damage and costs are still being assessed, I expect it might be a while before proper estimates are available as to how much will be required and how long the reconstruction/restoration will take.

Looking through the other projects, there's some pretty neat things. But of course, this particular project is rather different in nature.

I'm glad that it was accident, not arson - that this is not a Fantoft-type situation. And that so many things were able to be removed. And apparently the huge windows have survived (?!). And I have been hearing that the organ might have as well - though in what condition remains to be seen...

I expect that in the upcoming days/weeks we'll get more information on the state of things. I don't know if I will want to seek it out.

* The New Zealand Islamic Information Centre is running a campaign via Launchgood to raise funds for the victims of the Christchurch attack.

* There is also a different campaign run by NZ Council of Victim Support, via NZ-based crowdfunding site Givealittle. The site seems to be having issues right now, probably because of so many people accessing it. [Edit] Seems to be working fine now.

* Victim Support has opened an additional campaign at Everyday Hero on account of the overload/timeouts at Givealitte. (Details)

If any of you know of any others to take note of, let me know. I'll add them to the list. I'm looking mainly for NZ-based organizations; I figure they'd be the most effective.
