DW etc (??)

MAN you know, I was thinking about an idea for a DW comm. But I don't want to moderate it, I just want it to exist. So I can post to it. Maybe. Eventually. Once every 2.5 years. And the concept of moderating it is like, "ew how about no, ugh work, no thank you".

Because moderating is a lot of work. Even if it's a low-key thing! Because like, not only do you have to deal with any issues that might come up, and hand-hold anybody who doesn't understand how stuff works, you also (and to some degree, more Importantly?) have to be super proactive about Posting Stuff and Encouraging Things if you want to have any level of activity and make the place look like it isn't dead.

I remember back when I was running a prompt fest, I would get people coming to me like, "Posting is open, but nobody's posting??"

And I'd be like "Yes, it looks like nobody has finished their submission yet; but if you're done, you can post it! :)!"

And after the first two times that happened I just. Made sure to finish my own assignment ahead of time before posting opened. So I could post it first. Because people don't want to post when there's nobody else posting, I guess.

And DW comms in general (and LJ comms to a degree, to be fair) is one big "nobody wants to post when nobody else is posting, so nobody posts".

WHICH BRINGS ME BACK TO the thing I was Going to say, which is, DW comm mods, being a mod is hard, I Appreciate You.

It's usually good to have a couple of your friends lined up as ringers for that kind of thing, I've found. That said, omg, the energy output!

"nobody wants to post when nobody else is posting, so nobody posts" sums up the problem pretty well, yeah. And sometimes I see people post a thing, and I think, I should make a post about the thing this reminds me about later! Then I forget to actually do it.

Sometimes I think about trying to revive the comm I made, but I don't even entirely know what people would want out of it, so I'd probably want to make a poll first, and, yeah. Effort :x Glad for the mods who do put it in, though!

I wonder if it mightn't be psychologically easier to make a comm work if it's thought of more as a themed personal blog where you've invited other folks to jump in if they wish. Of course, half the time I am also not posting on personal blogs, but... the principle of the thing...

Aww yeah...I have never quite figured out how comms work (I think I might actually be in one or two and just get randomly surprised when someone posts, haha). That said I haven't managed to ever like...be regular about posting here for stuff that isn't "oh hey another exchange letter" so I suspect even if I was in more comms, I would only contribute to the problem you're describing. Still, the idea of like...more interaction on here sounds nice sometimes, I feel that.

Guess all I gotta do is wait until the next time a social media site has a hiccup - there's always a flurry of activity on DW when that happens. ;p
