I had some things I probably should have done today, but I spent that time re-reading some of my SSSS fic instead.

I miss that fandom a lot. I'm still so proud of some of the stories that I wrote for it. There was so much creativity there. And it was so much fun.

It's impossible to re-create that time. It'll never come back. But I'm so glad that we had what we did.

I still enjoy that universe. I don't think I currently have any wips; there are a few sketches for OC-related things, but nothing for the canon characters. "Colour in Your Cheeks" was the last one.

But I think... if I revisit the canon, I might get some ideas. One thing I regret is that I didn't write as much action-adventure-horror fic as I wanted to. The ones that I did write were so good! So, if I took another look... maybe inspiration will hit.

Upside, I have the first two volumes in print. So. We'll see

But man, I really miss this fandom. And Emil/Lalli is such a good pairing.

I came across some notes for a Jonna/Riikka fic that I never got around to writing, and it reminded me that I had more femslash ships in aRTD and SSSS fandom than I did in any other. (As well as crossover pairings between the two. There was a Sigrun Larsen/Jonna Kuikka fic that I never got around to writing, either...)

I still like all of those old pairings, but at the same time, I'm still so grumpy about everything that went down in SSSS/aRTD fandom. So. That story isn't going to get written any time soon. I've put the notes aside for the future, though. Just in case.

Like. Ugh.

Recently I've been working on some F/F for another fandom, and realized how much I missed writing it. It's fun! Buuuut this one is using a canon AU in which all the male characters are female and vice versa, and it just doesn't feel the same somehow.

So. Stand Still Stay Silent is officially finished.

I went and looked at the ending. It's not that bad. Adventure 2 was a disappointment overall, but the ending/epilogue etc isn't that bad. If I were still active in the fandom, I can see some things that I could pick up to play with.

It's very open-ended, because the author wanted to leave the possibility of doing an Adventure 3 in the future if she ever decides to pick up the story again, unlikely though that is.

My feelings about this comic are complicated. I still feel very angry and sad about a whole lot of things - both stuff directly related to the author specifically, and to the direction that the story took in general.

But SSSS fandom got me through some very difficult times, and I talked with some great people, and I wrote some fanworks that I'm still happy with.

I guess I'm having a hard time letting this go. But maybe it'll be easier now that it's officially done.

So. A webcomic artist I used to like just dropped a cult-flavoured short comic with an attached screed that boils down to "You're all sinners".*

I've been unimpressed with Minna Sundberg for a good while now. This has now been adjusted to a state of "extremely unimpressed".

As she states in the notes, this is a relatively recent development, and... yes, that tracks.

The above is unlikely to change much for me fandom-wise, since I haven't been writing much in Stand Still Stay Silent fandom lately and have mainly been keeping up with the comic out of inertia. I started to lose interest in the story after the timeskip in adventure 1/after the end of book 2, and from there it's been... well. You know.

I'm usually able to manage separating art from artist. But let's just say that I'm once again very glad that I decided not to order book 3 of SSSS. I didn't want to give this person any more of my money at that time, and I certainly don't want to now.

Just came across a comment where someone recced SSSS and mentioned that it has a shippable M/M age gap pairing in the form of... Onni/Lalli?

Haaa. What?

I definitely wouldn't rec it with that in mind. Not because it's an incest pairing, but because it's nonexistent in the fandom. If that's what you're into, then you're going to need to build it from the ground up on your own.

Luckily they also mentioned that Onni/Reynir fits the bill, so if someone looking for M/M age gap pairings does check the fandom out, at least there might be something for them. But, still. I was kind of surprised and confused.

Now that I'm giving it thought, you could do some pretty interesting darkfic centred around codependence and such with any of the Hotakainens. I'd click on that if I came across it. No ideas of my own writing-wise, but. Yeah, I'd read it.

This morning, I woke up to discover that someone had uploaded a Russian translation of "Let me see through your eyes"*, a short Emil & Lalli genfic that I wrote a few years ago for Trick or Treat exchange. Here: Позволь мне увидеть твоими глазами

Man, I love Ao3's "Related Work" feature. I don't require people to ask before translating; I only ask that translators link to the original when they post their version, and inform me that a translation has been posted, and Ao3 does both of those things at the same time. Efficient!

It looks like the translation was written for Fandom Battle, which is a big Russian multifandom fest-type event where people divide into teams by fandom, and then produce a whole bunch of fanworks for that fandom, posting them anonymously. I'm not entirely sure of the finer details of how it works, but it always seemed like a neat event to me.

Times like this, I wish I could understand Russian...! Not about to put in the effort to learn it, though. Anyway, much love to our friends in RU SSSS fandom. I hope your team wins (?) (not sure how this works). xD <3

I was re-reading the prologue for Stand Still Stay Silent today. The vibe sure is different in the light of... well... [/Gestures at literally everything happening in the world right now]

I think it's still my favourite part of SSSS. The art from that period looks so good, and I got weirdly attached to all of those characters, even though everybody from that set only shows up for a handful of pages each.

(Signe is still The Best.)

2 x SSSS from this year's Chocolate Box. Still going through everything, but for now - Stand Still Stay Silent had only a few things in the collection this year, but they were really good. :D

[Fic] Stand Still and Sing to the Balconies. G, main cast, hints at various pairs, 4.1k.
40-some years down the track, somebody thought it would be a good idea to stage an opera based on the Y90 expedition to Denmark. A preview is staged for a prospective investor.

[Art] Eyes of Vipers.
Sointu Takasuo, one of the Sentinel Mages posted to guard Saimaa's borders after the calamity of Y79.

Page 216 made me crack the hell up. I had a feeling something like that was going on with the lines/sensors, but the way the reveal is framed is just perfect.

Ah yes. It's an annoying spirit... very annoying... ;)

Maybe I should work on one of my wips for this series this weekend. I still have several things in various stages of writing.
yuuago: (SSSS - Purrito - Twirl)
Powerwalk by Skranken

This made me crack up, so obviously it needs to go here.

Darn ghosts clogging up the airways by the same artist is also a good one.

This person has such a fun style; seeing their work always makes me happy.

So, this fic by Wavewright62 has been up for a while, but I only got around to reading it just now. It's one of the best SSSS fics that I've read in a while - probably one of the ones I've liked best in general, really. I'm always down for a story set during the first months of the apocalypse, with people pulling together to get through it. :D

The title makes it seem a bit unsuited for reading in summer, but it's actually not very holiday-centric at all. It's set around the same time as the SSSS prologue, so we end up at that time of year.

Sit tight for worldbuilding, original characters, angst and tragedy, and various canon-typical things. And a whole lot of curry, of course. And it's on the long side, clocking at 27k!

Even if you aren't familiar with Stand Still Stay Silent, I think it's pretty easy to enjoy this one as a "found community during the apocalypse" story. It sets down all the relevant details pretty clearly, and since it takes place on the other side of the world from the original canon, you don't need to be familiar with any of the SSSS characters or their plotlines.

Anyway. Do check it out on Ao3 - it's a good read:

Stand Still Stay Silent update commentary - p. 123-124 )

I really want to know all the details of what's going to go down, but obviously we're going to have to wait a while. Time to flop on the floor, stare at the ceiling, and wish we had that info right now!

You know, I really understand those people who don't read the daily updates. There are a few out there who wait until a chapter is complete, and then read it. And then wait again. I could never do that, but I completely understand it.
yuuago: (SSSS - Lalli - Thoughtful)
Chapter cover for chapter 4 of story 2 of SSSS is up now.

Gosh, it's pretty. I'm loving all the little details in it.

I'm interested to see how this will fold out... It would be nice to get a little bit of information about what life is like in populated areas in Finland, but I'm not sure how long the crew will stay in this location.

There's been a lot of speculation about the direction the story is going, but I prefer not to throw any ideas out myself, as they'll likely turn out to be wrong. WELL, all one can do at this point is buckle up and see what happens, I guess.
yuuago: (Frozen - Elsa)
I received some lovely fics for Multifandom Drabble Exchange! Hooray!

I haven't had time to go through the whole collection yet, so for now, I'll just list my gifts. :D

Stand Still Stay Silent

+ Static Closing In by Resilur. G, 400 words. (Note: this one is chaptered!) What's the harm in leaving the radio on? ...What's the point of leaving it on?

Nirvana in Fire

+ Letters by Melody_Jade. G, 200 words. So what was in the letter that Sir Su wrote to Nihuang after the Wei Zheng incident?

Hetalia

+ Cut-throat by SaraGeneris/Kanadka. 100 words, G. The popularity of the starched ruff as a fashion element hits Denmark right around the time he peaks.

Frozen

+ A Palace of Ice by Sweetcarolanne. 100 words, G. Elsa's new bride, Kamik, is very different from the people of Arendelle, but the queen and the foreign princess discover they have much in common!

+ Equal, and Opposite by thedevilchicken. 500 words, rated 18+. Elsa meets someone like her, who's not like her at all.

+ Ungloving by ConvenientAlias. 200 words, rated T. "I want your gloves off."
yuuago: (SSSS - Lalli - Thoughtful)
+ I kind of forget how much I appreciate the regular update schedule until suddenly it's chapter break and the pages aren't coming the way they usually would. Oh boy. I don't want to be impatient for updates, but... I'm impatient for updates! ;)

+ At this point... I don't have any Deep Thoughts on anything that's going on at all. I'm just along for the ride. :V

+ I was hoping there would be some SSSS requests in Multifandom Drabble (other than my own), but alas, no. Darn. Next round, maybe...?

+ Man, I haven't had a good fic idea for this canon in a while. Ah well, all I can do is hope something will pop up eventually! I do have that one WIP with prologue characters that I was working on, though I haven't touched it in a while - part of the problem is that I wasn't sure where I wanted to go with it. (I knew I wanted to write horror, but hadn't considered beyond that.) Maybe when I'm on vacation I should pull it out and take another look. ;)

☆ Been trying to use the computer a bit less in the evenings. Don't know how effective that is. But work leaves my eyes so tired, so I figure it will help. So, might be a bit quiet.

☆ Going for runs at night is becoming less appealing by the day. So cold... Brrrr. :V Even the dogs don't want to go out.

☆ The second adventure of SSSS is starting soon. I'm very interested in how this one will go. Of course, everything considered, it'll be ages before we really know anything, but I'm happy to stay along for the ride. Also, the French edition of the first book will be released soon, and I'm looking forward to hearing what the translation is like... As far as I know, there is no ebook version. If there was, I'd buy that, and read it myself (Well... try to read it. My French is very bad. But one can try). But I don't have room in my living space for a paper version of it.

☆ Have finished quite a few stories recently that have been sitting in the WIP folder for ages. I'm pleased with myself. Especially since some of them are longer than what I usually would write. Maybe I will tackle one of my other longer wips for November; I have a lot of new ideas, but it would be nice to clear out some of the older stuff first.

☆ But speaking of writing... I only need 7 more stories to reach 500 individual works on my archive. Doing that before the end of the year seems very doable. :)
yuuago: (YiH - Sakari - Fresh air)
☆ Year in Hereafter's break is over. That means: new chapter. Yay! I've been missing the updates, it'll be nice to have new material again.

☆ Speaking of YiH, Mikael is doing an Indiegogo campaign for a printed version of the comic! Previously, he issued them as floppies, but this one is for a compiled version (good choice, it suits a lot better). Details over here; if you like YiH please support him if you can. :D ...I'm going to need to wait a bit before deciding whether to get only the book, or book + extras, because oh boy, once you convert those prices to CAD, it's a lot. (Insert typical grumping about the Canadian dollar here.)

☆ Other crowdfunding: there's a campaign for the second issue of Odie. Like before, Elli and Mikael did the art. :) Only a few days left for this one (it ends evening of Sept 04 NA time) Glad I caught that one before it ended; almost slipped my mind.

☆ Small Trolls updated, yay! The pages for this one are infrequent but I'm always so happy to see them. I should give it a re-read.

☆ Stand Still Stay Silent: I am going to continue to sit here and popcorn.gif all the way. I'm really enjoying all the survival horror stuff that's going on now + for the last little while. Also, I'm really glad that the bodysharing subplot is over, because I'm not really a fan. Might be surprising, considering I love the whole dreamwalking thing (and telepathy in other canons) but eh, what can one say. I prefer Lalli in his own body.

Speaking of SSSS, my attention has kind of wandered away from the shipping side of it. Which is interesting. Not that I dislike any of the pairings I liked before; I still like them. But I'm so much more interested in gen scenarios at the moment. It might be because I just finished drafting a longish genfic, ooorrr maybe the bodysharing turned me off just that much, who knows. I still love my prologue pairs, so there is that. :Va Anyway, 's funny how tastes change.

☆ Also SSSS: I haven't received my book 2 package, but probably will soon. I ordered an extra copy of the book to give away, but I don't know if I want to do a full giveaway. Is there anybody on my Flist who would like to have it? If so, give me a prod! You'll get it, and save me the trouble. xD

I've already crossposted links elsewhere, but I figured I might as well slap these recs down here too. Why not. :D

Vatican Miracle Examiner

Moonlighting by Madamefolie. Roberto/Hiraga + also Sister Anna Dolores, McGee, Julia, & Ruggieri Rutherford. 18+, 25.5k (!!).
Author's summary: A familiar face returns with a request-- and so our heroes find themselves enlisted to assist Zion's Law with an undercover mission. The terms of the assignment, however, are strictly ballroom.

My notes: The author tagged this with with: undercover missions, crossdressing, undercover as married, and action/adventure. And a few other things. Those together with the summary give a pretty good idea of what you're in for with this one. It's rated 18+, sure but, unlike most of Folie's other 18+ fic, I wouldn't recommend it for the porn; not because that bit isn't as good as it is in her other works, but because the undercover mission plot is so much fun! This fic has fucking everything - espionage, information recovery, gun fights, a really cool car chase, you name it. (And lots of McGee being his usual self, which delighted me. Everything is turned up to eleven, man.

Hetalia

Cost by Greendragon_Templar. Australia and New Zealand, directly post-WWI. G, 2k.
Author's summary: Bloodshed’s not a foreign concept, but the stain of a world war will linger. They have suffered alone before; now, they suffer as a part of a much greater whole, mourning the state of the world.

My notes: It's been a while since I last read a fic like this one, so it was a cool drink of water. Very nations-as-nations, this one.

The next two were for [community profile] raremaleslashex, which at this point of writing is still in the Anon stages. I'll add the author names in once they're revealed. :)

A Redtail's Dream

Something He Can't Break by [Anonymous author]. Puppy-fox/Hannu (Yes, really). T, 3.4k.
Author's summary: Puppy-Fox finds himself in a human body, and with a particular caveat regarding Hannu.

My notes: This was delightful. Lots of little humour, and tons of points for taking a surprising pairing and putting it together in a way that I can look at it and say "Yeah, okay, I can see that". :D Plus the characterization in this one is great.

Stand Still Stay Silent

where no other love goes by [Anonymous author]. Reynir/Onni, & Taru, Sigrun, Mikkel, Emil, & others. T, 10.7k (!).
Author's summary: The Kade in Red fled through the deep forests, and the mage followed.

My notes: Premise of this is that it takes place several years after current canon. There was a second mission, and it went... badly. This is about what happens after that. Contains temporary death, resurrection themes, and divine meddling. Reynir gets to do something cool. Happy ending. Yay! ANYWAY, what really interested me was the worldbuilding, and the background politics, and the mentions of the other mission. Well worth a read.
yuuago: (Nirvana in Fire - Prince Yu - Waiting)
It's been a bit more than a week since works for this exchange were revealed, but I only just got around to posting about it. :) I received several lovely gifts in three different fandoms, yay! And I wrote 5 works, in 3 different fandoms. Double yay!

I'd been looking forward to this exchange all year, and I'm glad it went so well. :D It really is a fun little exchange.

Anyway, here are the works I received.

Nirvana in Fire:

Seeking Warmth by Melody_Jade. 300 words, T, Prince Yu/Mei Changsu. Back in Jiangzuo, Changsu had collected a dossier of information on each prince, including within it Prince Yu's preference for men.
Pretty much what it says on the tin and I am still absolutely floored with delight that somebody wrote this pairing for me. It's the one I decided to chance putting in my requests, but never in a million years would have expected to actually receive.

A Redtail's Dream:

A Sip of Coffee by helia7. 100 words, G, Jouko Kuikka. Jouko's morning coffee break
My favourite grumpy baker! <3 This one is cozy.

Like I've Known You All My Life by Lunarium. 100 words, G, Vuokko Tikkanen & Mrs Squirrel. “Yet it seems I’ve known you all my life.”
LOOK, someone wrote me Vuokko fic! *_* It's charming. :D

Lunch Break by Elleth. 300 words, E, Joona Kuikka/Hannu Viitanen. Lunch hour in the garden shed.
Oh boy. Here there be porn. And it is very good indeed. :)a

Stand Still Stay Silent:

Árni's Dream by Wavewright62. 100 words, T, Árni Ragnarsson & Freyja with reference to Reynir. It was just a dream. Of course.
Ah yes, just a dream... well, that's one explanation for everything. :D

Before the Memory Fades Completely by Wavewright62. 100 words, E, Sigrun & Sjødraug. When we were young, you taught me to swim here.
This one is beautifully poetic.

Whalesong by Elleth. 100 words, G, survivors outside the known world. Heligoland has been a fortress before.
Beautifully atmospheric. Also, creepy voices in the radio! *_*

Of the fics that weren't written for me, I'd also like to rec all the other SSSS works, the two Year in Hereafter works, and the one VME work that I didn't write. I'm sure there are a lot of other awesome things in the collection too, but these are the only fandoms I read stuff for.

And to keep this from being super long, I'll put the ones I wrote under a cut. :)

yuuago: (VME - Lauren - Let's talk)
☆ Letter for Screen Exchange is complete (Voila). Requesting VME, Frozen, & NiF. I'm a little concerned about matching - I don't care if I go out as a PH, but this seems like it will be a very small exchange, and I'm worried that I might end up not having anybody to write for. Ah, well, if I have to drop out, I'll just save my ideas for later, and write them for myself!

☆ The first aid course that I was psyching myself up for has been cancelled. What a bummer. There'll be another opportunity in June, but still. I'm glad that I don't have to lose a weekend, but on the other hand, I was steeling myself to spend that time, so...! Eh, feels disappointing.

☆ To make up for that, I scheduled a driving lesson for this Saturday. I was planning on doing something useful that day anyway, so, might as well substitute it with something! I'm not looking forward to it, but I should probably get this done. And then do several more. Ugh. It'll be interesting to drive in the daylight; it's been... a while... since I've done some of that.

☆ Things are heating up in SSSS. I have no idea how this turn of events is going to unfold, and I'm not sure I want to speculate. Waiting is frustrating, but that's what I get for following an in-progress canon. Webcomics! They sure are a thing. I find the pacing is fine when it's complete, but ongoing, arrrrgh.... But I'm probably just impatient.

☆ Canadian politics always frustrate me for some reason or other, but this pipeline stuff takes the cake. My province is a big bug-eyed bully, and it's downright embarrassing. I'm torn between getting all angry about it, and wanting to sink into the floor. Well, both. Let's do both. And... see about sending some strongly-worded emails, or something. Ugh, Alberta.
