The book I was reading said something about how during the 1905 revolution in Estonia, people fled to Finland to escape the Bolsheviks. So in return, during the Winter War, young men volunteered to fight with the Finns.

Uhhhh.....gdi I forgot, let me check the library catalogue.

"Historical Dictionary of Estonia" by Toivo Miljan. I, uh, like the entry on Finland quite a bit.

I was also rather amused by this line "The Estonian culture has survived due to its "secret weapon": the difficult-to-learn Estonian language."

Yay! /o/ I had a bit of free time today so I went to the Baltic history section and pulled out a couple of books to check out. The book's pretty thick, and although the title says "Dictionary", it has quite lengthy explanations but isn't too hard to read.

(Also, ngl, the alphabetical categorisation made it easier for me to just flip to the topics I'm interested in :D )

I have one page of notes from today's reading. It has uhh... funny quotes, stuff to do with Finland, stuff to do with Sweden, HI OBVIOUS PRIORITIES.

My school notes are neat and I copy everything my lecturers write on the board because I pretty much depend on them for notes. Which makes life very hard when a lecturer has terrible handwriting and every Thursday I just end up being all ANGRY-- /deep breath

Well, I keep thinking that I should read up about the Russian and German bits, but those bits are so long, especially the bits about the Soviet Union so I just... uh... I'll just leave it for another time.

Mine classes are centred around note-taking B| I don't if it's the subject, or if it's due to the type of people taking the classes... but we really do rely a lot on the lecturer's notes for exams.

If only my lecturer would be as considerate as you /weeps
His handwriting is small and squiggly, the ts look like ks, the ss look like 5s, and most of the time in class is spent trying to decipher his handwriting rather than actually paying attention to what he's saying. And we've asked him to write bigger before, we keep asking him to read out what he just wrote, but he just doesn't get the hint (屮ಠДಠ)屮 彡 ┻━┻

YOU EAT ESTONIONS FOR BREAKFAST? DO THEY GO WELL WITH YOUR COFFEE?

Date: 2010-01-22 10:53 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
I've seen your handwriting and no, yours is perfectly legible. Imagine your handwriting but... more squashed, and less effort taken to make the letters look like what they should remotely look like. If he writes in capitals or write bigger, it wouldn't be so bad but he just won't B| B| B| man, yesterday I was in a totally rotten mood after three hours of him.

Also, I know nothing about fixing computers ╮(・~・)╭

"I'm going to have to come again with the correct disc to reinstall the operating system." Estonia leaned back against the chair and stared at the laptop thoughtfully. "There shouldn't be much problems and I'm sure I can save all your data too."

"Geeze, and here I was thinking that you could fix it up for me right away since you know all about these computer stuff." Poland crossed his arms and pouted. "What a waste of time."

Estonia bristled. "Well, it was a waste of time for me too. In the first place, all you said on the phone was "I need you to fix something. It's totally urgent!" How would I know what I'll need if you can't tell me what you want me to fix?"

"Gawd, there's, like, no need to shout, okay? How the hell would I know what's wrong with my laptop, you're the whiz kid here, hello."

Estonia sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Well, I can take your laptop back with me and fix it up. It won't take long, maybe a couple of days, and you can come pick it up then."

"You take my laptop back? Hell no, how would I know you're not gonna poke around and look at my private stuff, huh? There are, like, top secret national security stuff in there and all, I don't want you poking around that stuff!"

"What top secret national security stuff? You just want me to fix this today so you can bid in the auction for that pair of tacky boots!" Estonia waved his phone at Poland, the auction page still open on the display from when he had lent Poland his phone earlier. "I can't believe I rushed here just for this."

"You totally didn't have to come if you didn't want to! And hey, those boots are totally gorgeous and a steal at that price, okay. Not like you'll know, you can't see gorgeous unless it's spelt out to you in binary code."

"Better than someone who likes overpriced and flashy shoes that you can't even walk in!"

"Better than a four-eyed flabby wimp who sits around on his butt the whole day playing stupid games!"

"I'm not flabby! And better than a pansy who spends the whole day wasting money on clothes and make-up that only get used once!"

"I totally use them more than once! And better than a loser who doesn't realise he wears the same outfit everyday for a week!"

"I don't! And better than-- Gods, I don't know why I put up with you. Why did you call me for anyway, you could have just taken it to the shop." Estonia could feel a headache coming on. "Alright, I'll come by this weekend and fix it, if that's fine with you. I can't make it sooner, things are busy at the moment."

Poland looked away, one hand toying with a lock of his hair. "You don't have to, you know."

Date: 2010-01-29 10:21 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
"Wait, are you really angry with me? Look, you know I don't really mean it, right? I'm just tired now." Estonia ran his hand through his hair, unintentionally pulling out a few strands along the way. "I'll try to come by sooner," he said.

Poland turned to look at him, a look of surprise on his face. "No! I mean, like, you don't have to have a reason to come over, okay? You could, like, just come over and hang out and show me some of those games you play." His voice trailed off and he looked down, hands fidgeting with the hems of his shirt. "I'm not really, seriously angry. Idiot."

Seconds passed in silence. Estonia felt like he should say something. "I, uh, what?"

Poland looked up at him, his expression a mixture of exasperation and embarassment. "Look, just forget I said anything." He began pushing Estonia towards the front door. "Just, just go back now. Urgh, this is so not cool."

Estonia managed to snag his coat and bag before Poland pushed him out the doorway, "Wait, Poland, let me say somethi- woah!" He stumbled down the doorstep, catching his balance at the last minute. He turned back just in time to hear Poland shout "Goodbye!" and slam the door shut in his face.

Estonia went up and knocked on the door. "Hey, Poland? Hey!"

"Go back already!" Poland shouted back, voice muffled by the closed door.

Estonia knocked once more before giving up. "Look, I'll... I'll come by on Saturday, is that alright with you? I'll fix your laptop and then maybe I'll show you some of the games I play, but only if you really want me to, of course, and then maybe, uh, maybe we can go out and look at the shops and have dinner somewhere."

There was silence. Then the door cracked open and Poland's head peeked out just far enough for Estonia to see that his cheeks were flushed.

"Okay," Poland said, his voice barely audible. "Uh, I... Never mind, I'll see you on Saturday!" The door slammed shut again.

There was silence. Then Estonia's phone buzzed. He took it out to see a message from Poland- 'Thanks for coming today'. Estonia smiled, pocketed his phone and set off for home, humming cheerfully to himself.

True love

It was love at the first sight.

He wondered how he had got along before this. Like a lost child, perhaps, never quite sure of where he's going, never certain that what he saw is indeed what is there, never having the freedom to stretch his hands out to the clear sky and see the shapes of the clouds above.

Estonia slipped the metal frame over his ears. His eyes blinked owlishly from behind the thick lenses. He took in the scenery around him, marvelled at how everything looks so clear now. Somewhere to his left, Finland was laughing and saying something about how his eyes look so big through the glasses and that he resembles an owl but Estonia wasn't really paying attention to that. Is this how the world looks like to everyone else, he wonders. He sighed a happy sigh. The world was bright and he knew he would never be apart from his glasses.

(Of course, he got new pairs as his eyesight got worse but that's a different story.)

One-sided love

Dust motes danced in the sunlight filtering through the tall windows. The hallway was long and wide, the rooms along the side empty and quiet. The sharp clack of heels on stone preceded the two figures walking down the corridor. Estonia trailed behind Sweden, taking two steps to match with the taller nation's every step. His heart pounded with excitement. The rooms they passed were empty and silent but his mind filled them with books and manuscripts, students and scholars.

"Th's is yers now. Still the same buildin', but it's yer univers'ty now."

Estonia looked around him. The rooms they passed were empty and silent but his mind filled them with endless rows of books and manuscripts, with students and scholars poring over thick volumes and discussing ideas.

He looked up at Sweden. He had wanted this so badly ever since he visited Vilnius but never dreamt that he would get it so quickly.

"Sweden, I- I really, I really appreciate this." Estonia said, his word tumbling over each other in his anxiety.

Sweden stopped and turned to look at Estonia. His eyes met Estonia's but he remained silent and Estonia could not tell what the other nation was thinking.

"I, ah, th-thank you. Thank you, really." Estonia looked down, breaking eye contact, and pulled his worn-out coat tighter around himself.

"It might be still to' early fer ya' now. But el'ment'ry schools and print'ng press's are runnin', it won't be long 'til more of yer people c'n come 'ere." Sweden hesitated for a moment, then turned away to dig into the bag slung at his side. After a few seconds, he straightened up and pulled out a parcel wrapped in cloth from the bag.

"Here. Got this yest'rday. The print'ng press's are doin' a good job." Sweden handed the parcel to Estonia.

The knot on the cloth came undone easily and Estonia drew a sharp breath as his hands closed around the book inside. His fingers traced the gilded letters on the cover spelling out the title of the book and the name of its author. Taking care not to crack the vellum binding, he opened it on a random page and his gaze flitted across the rows of neatly printed text without really taking in the contents.

Sweden hesitated for a moment, then awkwardly patted Estonia on the shoulder.

"Yer'll do good," he said and turned to leave. Estonia watched him walk away until the tall figure disappeared into the distant, his hands clutching the book tightly to his chest.

Romantic love (You've read this one)

Romance, Estonia thought, should involve candlelit dinners, slow ballads, long drives or declarations of love. He glanced at Finland. And kissing, he thought. Definitely. That, at least, was the very basic ingredient for romance. At least, according to the romance novels he peeked at the last time he was at Latvia's house, it was.

Not this, the two of them lounging on the grass beneath the shady tree, remnants of a late brunch on the picnic blanket, the late summer heat making it too hot and cumbersome to do anything. A sleek iPod laid between them -- both of them had an earbud in an ear, both of them listening to the same music without saying anything. Finland's eyes were closed and he was humming softly along with the song. Estonia found himself staring distractedly at those lips.

Not that he was complaining, of course. Still, he wasn't sure where they stand now, on this vague line between romantic-kind-of-love and best-friends-soul-brothers-almost-family kind of love.

The song ended and a new one came on. Finland's eyes opened wide. A split second later, Estonia recognised the tune and he scrambled for the forward button.

Finland grinned. "That song about me, Viro?"

Estonia could feel his face heating up. "It has a nice tune," he said defensively. "And you have... the other one, too."

Finland turned towards Estonia and smiled. Then, without any warning, he leaned forward, cupped Estonia's head with his hands, and pulled him into a deep kiss.

"I know," he said. "It's a beautiful song." Finland leaned back against the tree, closed his eyes and began humming the cheerful tune.

This might not be the kind of romance found in novels, Estonia thought, but he wouldn't exchange it for anything in the world.

Doomed/Tragic love

"No," he whispered, voice shaking.

He clutched it tightly, praying hard as it whirred and hummed noisily - too loud, way too loud, he thinks. He could feel it vibrating beneath his hands and the smooth surface felt too hot to his fingers.

He tried to think of something he can do, anything. His mind raced through all the literature he has read on the subject, all the how-tos and tips and tricks. His mind came up blank, and he cursed himself for not sticking to his regular back-up schedule. All the data and gameplays he had saved, on the verge of being lost forever.

The computer gave one last half-hearted whirr. The power lights faded away and the screen blacked out. Estonia slumped down over his desk, head cradled in his arms, and sobbed in despair.

HA HA HA I'm so funny eh why aren't you laughing.

aha, I even found what little headcanon I have about her! Anons helped me though!

For now: not a pervert, she's just very comfortable with the topic of sex and doesn't think it's anything strange or embarrassing. She likes to know a lot, maybe a little on a gossip side. She loves cartoons and is especially proud of her own.

If I'm not who you think I am, you would have let down a poor anon ;p

Also, if you weren't in Canada, and if it weren't so heavy, I would send my French textbook over to you :/ I didn't get around to selling it off so now it's just another heavy book on my hands which I don't use.
