'kay, so that expert advice I was talking about this morning.

I was talking to Uni awhile back and she mentioned Pratchett in passing which reminded me I wanted to read some of the Discworld series. I've been avoiding it because there are just so many books, but I figure if they can be read on their own, then I don't have to read them all anyway... I could just stick to a single storyline or something.

Anyway, forgot about it for awhile, and then the topic of fantasy novels came up and reminded me again. And I just finished off the last book I own, so I kind of have to order more anyway. I'm not really sure which ones to start with though. ;3; I guess what I'm saying is I need some recs, either your favorites or somewhere to start? Or you can just punt me and tell me to look up stuff, myself.

I have some other books I'm going to order too, but they're not really for entertainment as much as research, so yeah. Might get World War Z too, though. Thumbs up or thumbs down? 'Cause you know I've got this horrible habit of reading about things that scare me shitless. But I can save it for later if it's just eh.

Okay. You'll want to take a look at the "reading order" guide. There is one here (under "English, 2.0") though it isn't quite up to date - I shall wear midnight is missing from the end of the Witches list - but anyway.

Let's see... One thing I would suggest is picking one book from each storyline. Or pick the "starters" for a few different storylines. That way, you get a (nearly) complete overall view of the series, and who is involved in it, and the stories and the types of stories contained. The main reason I suggest this is because that's how I did that (though it had more to do with what was available to me in the library at the time than anything else), and it worked very well.

From each line, I'd suggest the following, though by and large these suggestions are the first I read, and the ones that got me hooked on each story (and by extension the series itself). (And if more than one is listed, then those are all 'favourites', but the first is the one I read first)

Rincewind/Wizards novels: The Colour of Magic, The Last Continent
Witches: Lords and Ladies, Carpe Jugulum
Death: Hogfather
The Watch: Jingo, Feet of Clay
Industrial: Going Postal, Monstrous Regiment
Ancients: Pyramids
Tiffany/Young Adult: Wee Free Men [considered part of the Witches narrative by many, but I consider Tiffany's novels part of a separate storyline]

Let's see, what else. Oh yes -- it's possible to tailor the storylines you read to existing tastes you might have. In general, the different narratives satirize different things. The Watch novels (not surprisingly) often satirize mystery narratives and the police force. The Ricewind/Wizards novels poke fun at wizardry (of course) but the focus is often also on academia. Others, like Going Postal and Making Money, take on things like economy and government institutions.

I'm kind of reluctant to push you to read the Rincewind novels, because they are disliked by a lot of Discworld fans. Actually many of Pratchett's early novels aren't all that popular in comparison to some of the later ones. On the other hand, I'm extremely fond of the Rincewind narrative, and of Rincewind as a character, and the first Discworld novel I happened to read, also the first in the series, The Colour of Magic, is about him, and it's what made me fall in love with the series so completely. So... I suppose the conclusion is this: I love it, but many people do not, and you might or might not.

Among other readers, the Watch narrative is the most popular (and I enjoy it very much too) though I will say that one of the later ones (Thud) is not as good as the rest, and while generally one can just pick up a Discworld book and read it regardless of order, I would advise not to read Night Watch unless you've read other Watch novels.

The Witches stories are also very popular. As I mentioned above, I consider the YA Witch narrative to be separate from the regular Witches stories; the first is about three grumpy old women (all of whom I absoltel adore), whereas the Tiffany novels are about a witch-in-training and a bunch of grumpy, tiny blue hooligans. I will say, with regard to the Tiffany novels, Wee Free Men made me cry -- but that might be because of certain personal attachments I have, and might not have the same result with another person.

Oh, and re: your end note about World War Z. I did enjoy it, and I do recommend it. However, I did find some parts of it very disturbing, and would suggest reading it during daytime hours.

Okay, let's see.

Yuriy: He has shoulder-length medium brown hair. It's thick and has a very slight wave to it.
His face is a little bit thin and pointy and his eyes are brown and tired-looking. His lips are thin, and his nose is on the large side (think "Russia Nose"). His hands have long fingers, but they aren't pretty and delicate; more wiry-looking. (In fact, the rest of his figure is wiry-looking as well). He's a bit too skinny. He wears a lot of layers of clothing; he likes wearing turtlenecks, and an open sweater over that, and a scarf. His clothes are a bit worn-looking, but not too shabby. I don't know how old he is; let's say around 30.

Yulia: Her hair is long, down to mid-back. It is brown, thick, and straight. Her bangs are swept to her left side. Her face is wider than her brother Yuriy's, but her facial features are similar - she smiles more than he does, though. She's slim, but very sturdy, and a bit broad-shouldered. She likes to dress comfortably; she's fond of wearing cardigans. Generally, she looks serious, but kind. Kind of has a school-teacher look about her. She's a little bit older than Yuriy, but only by a few years.

Jacques: He has short black hair, a bit messy, but straight. The style makes him look on the young side; it's cut to about chin-length. He's thin, but his face is a bit round. His eyes are wide and cheerful and dark. His nose is pointy and he's usually smiling. He wears round glasses, but I haven't decided if they're only for reading or not. His clothing is on the casual side, and runs toward the "button-down shirt open over a t-shirt, with jeans" look. He's in his early 20s.

How to use the Hetalia Kink Meme

Using hetalia_kink can be a little difficult if you aren't used to it. I have tried to write up a tutorial for this after some of my friends expressed interest in it.

This is going to be a little bit long, so be sure to read everything carefully! I've provided screenshots in order to give a visual aid for everything. :)

Requesting

If requesting is open, you can submit your prompt to the kink meme by clicking "post a new comment" in the most recent part. To find out which part is the most recent one, go to hetalia_kink an scroll past the intro until you find an entry titled "Hetalia Kink Meme Part (X)". The current part as of this writing is Part 26.

Request Format

Requests must be anonymous, and they must be in the proper format. The format is used so that people can tell at a glance what your prompt is.

Subject line: the pairing and the prompt/kink. If you forget the pairing or prompt from the subject line, your prompt will be screened from view and you will have to re-post it in the correct format. You need to have some kind of prompt or kink; "anything" is not accepted.

Body of the prompt: The important details about your request. Try to keep it no longer than 200 words. You can have up to 3 bonuses, which are extra things that aren't required for the prompt but would be nice to have.

Example

Subject: Belgium/Romano - Haircurl play
Prompt: Belgium likes to tease Romano in bed by playing with his haircurl and making him squirm. Established relationship, please. Canon universe, not AU. Bonus: creative use of Belgium's hair-ribbon for bondage.

Requesting and Request Freezes

Requesting on the kink meme is only open at certain times. There is a request freeze after every 5 pages of requests on the most recent part. After 50 fills have been reported to the Fill List, requests are open again. The mod will announce request freezes at the top of the most recent Part and on the last page of that Part.

Other Things To Know When Requesting

*Only include one request per comment. If you want to make two requests, you will need to make two separate comments for them. This ensures that the kink meme is easy to navigate.

*If there is anything you don't want, it might be helpful to include it in your prompt. For example, some people really hate AUs or the use of human names in fic, but fillers don't always check about this before filling, so it can be helpful to include things like "nation names only" or "canon universe only" or "human AU is okay" in your prompt so that potential fillers know beforehand.

*Wait at least 6 months before requesting events based on Real Life tragedies. Please use courtesy when requesting things related to recent/current events.

*"Any prompt/kink" prompts aren't allowed. Make sure that you have some kind of prompt or kink in addition to your pairing, even if it's vague. (Note: some old prompts have "anything" at the prompt; these were submitted before this rule was in place.)

Pick from a list - Bondage, Blindfolds, & Teasing
B blindfolds A, ties them down, and teases them mercilessly. Use one of these pairings: Netherlands/Belgium, Norway/Denmark, or Australia/America.
