True love

It was love at the first sight.

He wondered how he had got along before this. Like a lost child, perhaps, never quite sure of where he's going, never certain that what he saw is indeed what is there, never having the freedom to stretch his hands out to the clear sky and see the shapes of the clouds above.

Estonia slipped the metal frame over his ears. His eyes blinked owlishly from behind the thick lenses. He took in the scenery around him, marvelled at how everything looks so clear now. Somewhere to his left, Finland was laughing and saying something about how his eyes look so big through the glasses and that he resembles an owl but Estonia wasn't really paying attention to that. Is this how the world looks like to everyone else, he wonders. He sighed a happy sigh. The world was bright and he knew he would never be apart from his glasses.

(Of course, he got new pairs as his eyesight got worse but that's a different story.)

One-sided love

Dust motes danced in the sunlight filtering through the tall windows. The hallway was long and wide, the rooms along the side empty and quiet. The sharp clack of heels on stone preceded the two figures walking down the corridor. Estonia trailed behind Sweden, taking two steps to match with the taller nation's every step. His heart pounded with excitement. The rooms they passed were empty and silent but his mind filled them with books and manuscripts, students and scholars.

"Th's is yers now. Still the same buildin', but it's yer univers'ty now."

Estonia looked around him. The rooms they passed were empty and silent but his mind filled them with endless rows of books and manuscripts, with students and scholars poring over thick volumes and discussing ideas.

He looked up at Sweden. He had wanted this so badly ever since he visited Vilnius but never dreamt that he would get it so quickly.

"Sweden, I- I really, I really appreciate this." Estonia said, his word tumbling over each other in his anxiety.

Sweden stopped and turned to look at Estonia. His eyes met Estonia's but he remained silent and Estonia could not tell what the other nation was thinking.

"I, ah, th-thank you. Thank you, really." Estonia looked down, breaking eye contact, and pulled his worn-out coat tighter around himself.

"It might be still to' early fer ya' now. But el'ment'ry schools and print'ng press's are runnin', it won't be long 'til more of yer people c'n come 'ere." Sweden hesitated for a moment, then turned away to dig into the bag slung at his side. After a few seconds, he straightened up and pulled out a parcel wrapped in cloth from the bag.

"Here. Got this yest'rday. The print'ng press's are doin' a good job." Sweden handed the parcel to Estonia.

The knot on the cloth came undone easily and Estonia drew a sharp breath as his hands closed around the book inside. His fingers traced the gilded letters on the cover spelling out the title of the book and the name of its author. Taking care not to crack the vellum binding, he opened it on a random page and his gaze flitted across the rows of neatly printed text without really taking in the contents.

Sweden hesitated for a moment, then awkwardly patted Estonia on the shoulder.

"Yer'll do good," he said and turned to leave. Estonia watched him walk away until the tall figure disappeared into the distant, his hands clutching the book tightly to his chest.
