Finished watching the second season of Fortitude this evening.

The first season* was entertaining in a batshit sort of way, so I figured that I'd give the second a try, even though I wasn't sure where they could go after an end like that. I'm a sucker for stuff set in Assfuck Nowhere, Norway, y'know?

The second season, though. I didn't like that one anywhere near as much as the first. Partly because the scifi element stretched my suspension of disbelief too much. The first season was weird, but the second one was a little too weird. But aside from that, I wasn't a fan of the inclusion of all the shamanism stuff. C'mon, you could have had a perfectly normal batshit serial killer narrative intersecting with local legends and wacky science, but it just had to go in the Sami direction and... I don't know, I was just deeply uncomfortable with all that.

After a certain point, I was pretty much just watching it for the setting. And also for Petra and Ingrid. And vague ideas about Petra/Ingrid - they need to cuddle together and cry over their various traumas, or something. And Petra needs to forget about Dan, Dan sucks.

I really enjoyed the scenes where Ingrid and Petra are working together to try to solve these murders while everyone else is either obstructing them or getting in the way or acting totally crazy. Like, everything is off the rails, but here these two are attempting to do some decent police work, and they do manage to get on the right track for a while. All those moments where they suspect Hildur was murdered, and they're going through and trying to find evidence, doing everything they'd do under normal circumstances - the circumstances certainly aren't normal, but I sure do love 'em for trying.

There was this one very small scene where they're discussing how Hildur's handbag hasn't been found, and they're trying to figure out which one she might have had with her when she went missing. And for a moment their conversation gets off track and they talk about which one of Hildur's bags they like best. It was both fun and funny - fun to see them talking about something normal and having a normal conversation, and funny because this conversation is happening at a crime scene, with blood smeared everywhere, including on the walls.

I can't pin down other moments like that, but they do get other scenes that are in the same vein - comic relief stuff, bumbling constables, kind of a Tomson and Tompson sort of vibe. I guess that's why I like to see them together.

Though there's also that bit early on, when Petra is talking about how the only physical intimacy that she has is with dead people, and then Ingrid touches her hand... yes. Yes! !!!!!

Anyway, uhhh the first season was fun, but the second one didn't really work for me. Though I did get a new tiny femslash ship out of it, so there is that. (Naturally, no fanwork exists for it. As usual.)
