I'm sloooowly making my way through the list of TV I want to see. It's nice to have something to watch while I knit. ;)

So, over my latest break from work, I watched Fortitude, or at least the first series of it (2015).

I originally thought that it would be a pretty ordinary police procedural, albeit one with an interesting setting - a fictional town in Svalbard. Crime + arctic settings is absolutely my thing, I am totally there.

As I watched, it kept getting more and more cracked out. And it wasn't something I easily noticed; it's like, a slow descent into WTF territory.

Also, everyone in this town is fucked up. Even if they don't seem fucked up at first, they become fucked up. Or end up in fucked up situations. And so on.

I will say: it leans a bit more science fiction than I expected. After poking around, I see it's labelled as a "sci-fi mystery thriller", but since I went into it spoiler-free, I wasn't expecting much in the way of science fiction aside from the standard unrealistic forensics nonsense.

Though, the science fiction aspect is still within throwing distance of realism; we aren't talking The Thing, here.

Fortitude has two more series; the third came out this year (2018). I'm rather surprised at this, because the first series of it wraps up pretty solidly. Even if there is an entirely new storyline for series 2, I find myself wondering where exactly one could go from here. Since my library has the second series, I think I will check it out eventually, though it isn't top priority for me right now.

Would I recommend it? Well, maybe. I will note that it has a whole lot of violence of all kinds, as well as people getting eaten by polar bears and so on. But if those things don't bother you, maybe give it a go if you like geography porn, arctic settings, low-key science fiction, and if you have a high tolerance for whackadoodle bullshit.

That description reminds me of a chinese series I enjoyed called Tientsin Mystic.

idk why but I cracked up at "people getting eaten by polar bears". Yeap, definitely set in the arctic :D This sounds like the kind of thing I would love to check out, if I can find a way to watch it here.
