Just finished True Detective: Night Country. This is season 4 of this anthology series; this one is set in Alaska in winter. A murder takes place just as the sun sets for the last time for a good while, and it has connections to another murder several years before.

No surprises here, I am very into the vibe. The endless night. The cold and gloom. Jodie Foster is incredibly hot as detective Danvers, holy shit. And the vibe between Danvers and Navarro is amazing. They can't stand each other, but they're the only people who can understand each other. The ~chemistry~ between those two, man.

I saw someone compare this series to The Terror and like, I can see where they're coming from. Obviously there is a big difference between settings, but there's that "it's cold and dark and everything is miserable" thing going on, also ominous polar bears, frozen people, vaguely supernatural vibes, etc. And also a mildly antagonistic relationship between the two leads that later becomes... less antagonistic.

[Edit] Though now that I give it more thought, a more obvious parallel is to Fortitude, at least in terms of plot and vibes and what's going on with the science-not-science. But in terms of dynamic between the leads - yeah, that reads closer to The Terror. [/edit]

I'm going to cut the rest because it's kind of spoilery.

Episodes 5 and 6, man. At first I was like "hmm" and then I was like ?! and then I was just. Along for the ride. "What even is going on? I guess we're killing people and hiding bodies now, holy shit."

Also, all that stuff between Danvers and Navarro in episode 6... Trapped in a freezing building. Intense discussions while trying not to freeze to death. Rescuing each other! Hypothermia! And that moment with the quiet and the northern lights in the background. Damn, this episode has everything.

And then the end, that moment at the very end... well. Yeah, it took me a while to warm up to those two, mostly because they're so prickly, but eventually, yeah, they won me over, with whatever the hell is going on between them.

Anyway. Good series! Glad I watched it! Kind of weird that I tend to default to "freezing in the arctic" type shows during the summer, though. :Va
