Judo adventures 3.53
Feb. 22nd, 2025 01:00 pmAttending: Me, Mo, & one of the colourbelt kids. T-sensei instructing.
Since it was just me, T-sensei, and some very small kids, I ended up being uke a lot today.
We had an extended warmup with beep test. I didn't do so well on the beep test - 5.7, compared to my last beep test of 6.6 - I think it's partly because I did some breakfalls and stuff while I was waiting, so maybe I used some energy beforehand. Anyway, after beep test we worked on breakfalls and rolls a lot, which I appreciated.
We did upright. Ogoshi and ippon-seoinage with left turn-in. The kids were kind of ??? about it, but I think that they started catching on pretty well, and it will probably be useful for them later on.
So, for me, mostly I ended up being someone they could use for uchikomi. And Mo is (almost) big enough to throw me, so when we got to the throwing stage I was uke for her. I did get to throw her a bit, at least.
We did some pseudo-randori at the end. Mostly T-sensei was encouraging us to use specific grips and specific techniques, so it wasn't truly freeform, but there is that.
Overall, I don't prefer classes where I do more assisting than learning, but it's inevitable when it's a small class with me + small kids + instructor who can't be thrown. There was a festival this weekend and next week kids have school off (because of teacher convention in Edmonton) so a lot of people were out of town. I'm assuming that's what happened this weekend.
