Judo adventures 2.21
Feb. 14th, 2024 10:51 pmAttending: Me, A, H, SJ, C, M, M2, and various kids. We also had a new guy, M3. Sensei and R-sensei instructing.
I partnered with H today.
We started off with some groundwork; chokes specifically. Types: Darce, Anaconda, Helicopter. The first two are slightly easier without the gi, so we did them both ways.
Darce procedure: When opponent is in turtle, go in with hand under their arm; come out other side near their opposite ear, hand up. Grasp your other arm at the bicep. From there you can either tighten, OR roll them over and catch one of their legs with your own leg, which tightens it all up.
Anaconda: Kind of reverse of Darce. You go in underr their ear; hand comes out under their arm. Grasp your bicep. From there, again, you can either tighten or roll.
With the gi on, you need to grip your gi, and also your opponent's gi - moving your hand up the fabric to grasp as tightly as possible. Kind of tricky.
Helicopter choke: This is sort of like a bow and arrow choke, but with some differences. Opponent is in turtle. You're facing the same direction as their head. Step over their body; go in with left hand to grip the gi under their neck on their right side. Your right foot comes over their head, places by left side of their head. With your free hand, you go in to scoop under their right arm, and roll down - this will bring them up, and everything will be very tight. It's really nasty. :V
After that, we did some throwing. Sensei wanted us to learn harai-goshi today. It's... tricky. Like, when you break it down, technically it's just a hip throw with some modifications. But you sweep your opponent's feet out from other them while doing it. So it's... eh. Weird. I managed to do it correctly eventually, but H had a lot of trouble with it. Not because of the technique, but because of size difference - I'm much taller than her, so getting me to go down is very tricky,. She ended up going splat a lot while trying to throw me.
Couple rounds of randori after that. H kicked my ass, then C tired me out even more. I am Exhausted.
The Alberta Winter Games are this weekend, and some of them (H and C I think, not sure about others) are going to be competing. Hopefully they'll do well!

Date: 2024-02-15 11:19 pm (UTC)Harai is tricky. For me it works best on shorter people. I can also only hit it from one specific grip, not the standard grip. But it's sooooooo satisfying when I get it hahaha

Though I first learned harai from the standard grip. I can only do it with a very cooperative uke that way.
