Today was me, K-kun, J, L, and S. T-sensei instructing.

For the most part, we worked on the osoto-makikomi throw today. Grip opponent's arm with left hand, go over arm with right hand (as opposed to under, as you would with ippon-seoinage) then follow through with the turn and throw.

We had the crash mats out, so we were actually able to do the throw this time - unlike the class where we initially learned it, where we were only doing it very very very slow, not throwing our opponents so much as just getting them on the floor, in order to get a taste of it. K-kun and me alternated with J.

In the full version of this, you kind of end up on top of your opponent, wrap around them, and then compress. Really takes the wind out of 'em! We didn't work on that stage yet; today we were focusing only on the throwing part of it. Maybe the rest will come next class.

It's a little tricky to do it right, and there were a few times where I instinctively went under to do a seoinage instead of over to do a makikomi, whoops. But tricky or not, I like it.

After that, we got a taste of a different throw, a new one that I don't recall the name of. It's very tricky! Process: Get your opponent's head down and under your right arm. With your own right arm, reach over and behind to grab their belt (on their right side/your left). Step inward with left foot; then go up with right foot to catch the inside of their thigh (your right/their left), and fall/roll backward, while using your leverage to bring your opponent over. Very challenging! Quite a throw! I'm going to have to figure out what the heck this one is called so I can look it up later.

We had a little time for randori at the end, and I was able to go a round with J. Very fun! Wasn't able to get him on his ass though, that kid managed to counter me every time. But I was able to counter his attempts many times too, so I'm pretty happy about that! Next time we do upright randori I'll have to try to remember to attempt makikomi on him - it would be hard for me to do it in that context with the taller guys, but with J, I think I could manage to pull it off.

Sensei is very happy with my progress so far. :D Hooray!

Just curious, does your dojo normally not have mats? Or maybe do you have an older crowd? We never use separate crash mats, just our regular mats.

Yay for progress!

My current dojo is younger (college kids) so maybe that's why, lol.
