Aug. 23rd, 2020 08:52 amShort list of stuff I want to read/watch because people I'm acquainted with enjoyed them:
-Chernobyl (miniseries) - Probably depressing as hell, which is why I avoided it, but Tik really liked it, so now I have to try it.
-Jean-François Parot's Nicholas le Floch novels - Every time
monksandbones mentions these, I find myself thinking, "Damn, that series sounds interesting". I have access to some of them via library, but only in Hoopla format, which is why I'm dragging my feet.
-Tamsyn Muir's Gideon the Ninth - Folie likes this, and Folie has good taste. Obviously, I must. Strangely, I only recently heard that this novel has some kind of mystery in addition to the necromancy - if I'd heard about that in recs earlier, I probably would have got to it more quickly on my own.
-Kingdom (that Korean Joseon-era zombie drama) - Tik loved it. It seems right up my alley. Zombies! Historical costumes! Whoo!
-Emily St John Mandel's Station Eleven -
elleth liked it a lot, and I do recall thinking it sounded good... Post-apocalypse and theatre? Why haven't I read this yet?!
-Band of Brothers (series) - Seems up my alley, though whether or not I'd be fannish about this remains to be seen. Looking forward to having context for the stuff
muccamukk posts about though.
-Babylon 5 - A fic writer I really like (
kanadka, it's them) enjoys this a lot, and I want context. Might take me longer to get around to this though (it's so... long).
I want life to slow down so I can actually get around to some of these! ("But Yuu, you had plenty of time for things like this two months ago" - Hush. ;p )

(In all seriousness I wish I could say B5 is like... good. Parts of it are very very good!! ...and parts of it are overwrought, theatrical, and cheesy as all hell. Plus it's live action sci-fi from the 90s, so it's definitely dated. :'D I've never had the best taste.)
I also want to get into Band of Brothers and Chernobyl - I only heard good things about Chernobyl. For BoB I meant to find a downloaded version like, half a year ago, but then pandemic happened and now we're not sure we'll be going to Canada for Christmas (which - this may sound dumb but it's the only place I'd trust to torrent stuff, Germany has weirder and stricter laws that actually do get enforced).
Also on that note of things to read because people I'm acquainted with enjoyed them (you, it's yuu), whatever happened to SSSS? Is that still going strong? I binged the first bit maybe in 2015 or so and really enjoyed it, but it must have ended by now, surely. How'd it turn out?

SSSS is still ongoing! The "first adventure" ended a while back (~973 pages, finished Sept 2018), and now we're onto the second adventure, which involves the same cast in a different location. I have mixed feelings - the canon kind of wandered away from what originally drew me to it, but I'm still interested enough in seeing where it's going to read the new pages (4x updates per week). There's currently a kickstarter for the printed version of book 3.
Fandom-wise, we're unfortunately in the middle of an ongoing wank, or rather wank from 4 years ago has been resurrected. So things in the fandom are a little bit tense right now. But there's a backlog of lots of neat things to read, at least.

Date: 2020-08-24 03:40 am (UTC)lmao I'm so seconding Chernobyl, it's the best dang show I've seen possibly ever (I love love nirvana in fire, just in terms of bang for buck chernobyl gets so much done in so few episodes). oddly enough, I didn't come out depressed? troubled, yes, but it's as much about how people try to help as how people make problems. Like, it's upsetting, but not gratuitously so? Mazin wanted people to listen, not to hurt the audience. Maybe if you wanna brace yourself, the scripts are up to read! https://johnaugust.com/library :D
