Ahh, man.

One of the discords I'm in recently created a selfies channel, and it really does not sit well with me.

A lot of the members of that discord are underage, and as far as I see it, really should not be encouraged in any way to put their faces on the internet.

Sure, discords are semi-closed; you need to join first in order to see anything. But everybody is allowed to join this one, and there are no permission filters that are required before you can see that channel. And even if that security was in place - that you had to ask for a specific role before you could see it - there's still no guarantee that there aren't any creeps or assholes in this 200-member server.

And I don't necessarily mean creeps in the sexual sense - it's just, people can and do steal pictures and spread them around for a whole bunch of reasons and purposes, such as resposting with inflammatory comments for revenge, or using someone's pictures to pretend to be that person, or a different made-up identity. And it's really hard to do anything about it once it's out there.

I'm not sure why we even have this channel, since the server is for fiction-related fandom, not for real-life hobbies. Like, I could see something like this being relevant in a fashion or costuming server. But not one for anime fanfiction.

But I don't know how to bring any of this up without sounding like a stuffy old spoilsport.

[EDIT]: I brought it up with one of the mods. They're discussing the issue with the other mods. Regardless of what they decide to do about it (be that something or nothing or whatever), I'm glad that I said something.

Can't disagree with you there. Trying to protect minors from oversharing is just a collective good thing to aim for.

Well, I PM'd a relevant person about the safety issue, because this would have bugged the hell out of me if I hadn't. So either something will come of that, or it won't.

Yeaaaah. A lot of the time I would just keep my thoughts to myself, but... figured it'd be better not to in this case.
