May. 7th, 2016 01:23 pmToday was nice. We picked
diplopod up from the airport. Had sushi for lunch. Chilled at Sea's place for a while, then went for a long walk in the woods after supper. Nice. <3
Started a new aRTD fic, but it's really not going how I want it to at all. I only have one page and I suspect I'll have to re-write half of it, bleh. Oh well, writing that needs revision is better than no writing.
Fire stuff: It's still getting bigger. And bigger. People who were evacuated to the oil camps have been evacuated south of the city. They're now telling workers at site to be prepared to evacuate. I have no idea how it's going to affect production, but this is not good.
Managed to get into touch with some people from work. Everyone got out fine, which is good. Ugh, I have no idea what's going to happen with that. I really want to be able to get back to my job, but that's not going to happen for a while.
Probably won't be able to get back into the city for like, a month.
-Look up what to do about my tax refund (stupid me opted for paper cheque rather than direct deposit, argh)
-Check with bank to see if Bank Stuff can be handled online rather than over the phone, so that I can do it now rather than when I get back. My mobile doesn't work in Sweden. Okay, looks like the extra things I'm eligible for are being applied to everyone with a Fort McMurray address (as far as I can tell). This is good.
-Check to see how to apply for unemployment insurance/what I should do about that/whether I can do it now rather than when I get back. Looks like I can take care of this online, so, that calls for a new to-do:
-Fill out the online EI form and get that taken care of -_-
-Apparently all evacuees should register with Red Cross. My parents handled my registration for me, but I should look up what it entails.

Date: 2016-05-08 12:47 pm (UTC)I think it is usually pretty cheaper to buy a prepaid sim instead of a phone, but i think some phones cant work with some networks no matter what and i dont know if Sweden sells those aaand maybe you have a phone that doesnt use sim cards.
Anyway, have a great time in Sweden!

Date: 2016-05-08 03:21 pm (UTC)I don't know what my phone uses, it's kind of an ancient old thing. I just remember asking about it with the phone company the last time I went abroad, and the answer they gave sounded like a pain in the ass.
Fortunately, it looks like I'll be able to take care of all of my EI stuff (and probably most other evacuee stuff, sigh) online, so no need to worry about it.
Sweden has been wonderful so far, thank you. <3

Date: 2016-05-10 05:46 pm (UTC)First of all I was super happy to hear that a) everybody got out of Fort Mac okay and b) that your house is apparently still standing!?? AMAZING. Houses not so important as people, true, but it is really shitty to rebuild the contents of a house and 0% fun. Given that it's still raging we continue to keep all fingers crossed for you guys and all of Alberta and now Saskatchewan for an actual monsoon.
Second of all you're in Sweden holy shit that's amazing???? I hope you're having the greatest time ever!
And last of all the way I've done my Canadian tax issues (they think we're emigrants as in the never-coming-back sort? and there seemed to be no way to tick a 'maybe I'm coming back I don't know yet' box? it involved a lot of calls to CRA let's put it this way) is through Skype. Calling a landlne is 3c CAD a minute so it's actually pennies. For those times that something governmental Absolutely Cannot Wait but also Absolutely Needs A Call To A Human it's been super helpful. I hear Viber will also work that way? Whatsapp might too. In case you prefer those over Skype!
Also calling CRA never takes very long on hold! I guess because nobody wants to talk to them, aww. :c
anyway ENJOY SWEDEN, WOWWWW!!

Date: 2016-05-10 05:55 pm (UTC)It's a miracle that everyone managed to get out safely. There were some fatalities, but they were traffic-related, not fire-related. The success of this thing is amazing. And yeah, my house is in one of the areas least affected by the fire. And my brother's house is still standing too. So hopefully, when we are able to go back, everything will be fine as far as housing goes - which is good, because some of my parents' friends lost everything, so they'll need a place to stay too.
And yesss I am in Stockholm; I have had this trip scheduled since January, to visit a friend, and though the circumstances are kind of dramatic, it's nice to be able to get as far away from Alberta as possible. xD Things have been very awesome so far, which is great.
re: CRA, I thiiiink I might be fine; my taxes were already filed before the disaster, the only concern was with my tax return, because I am an idiot who lives in the dark ages and hasn't switched to direct deposit. But we have mail forwarding set up now, so I think everything will be fine with receiving my cheque. :3
I am TOTALLY going to enjoy Sweden, yes <3

Date: 2016-05-10 06:13 pm (UTC)haha, then I'm an idiot too, up until last year it was all mailed cheques. But to be fair getting mail that is also money is a really good feeling.

Date: 2016-05-10 06:19 pm (UTC)I already have a bunch of photos from the castle and also from Sigtuna <3 And hopefully get more when we go to old town. Though whether I will be not-lazy enough to take them off the camera and resize to post is another question, pfffff.
YES I know eh, getting money in the mail is amazing. But yeahhh after this emergency, I... think I will be getting direct deposit in all circumstances from now on.
