Sunlight and books and fandom, oh my

MAN. This last week has been a doozy. I have been so tired, and cranky, and depressed, and I've not been happy with anything, and especially not myself. ...And that's all I'm going to say about that.

But I'm feeling better today, and thank the gods for that. I think maybe what I needed was some sunlight. And it was very nice out today! So... hopefully this improved mood will continue. I headed downtown after my dentist appointment, had lunch at that awesome little cafe that I wanted to go to last week, and just kind of chilled. It was so nice. I think I needed today, really.

Went down to the library and grabbed some of the stuff I'd been looking at last week before the power outage foiled my plans. Poked around a bit more in the Native Literature collection; turns out the bulk of it is nonfiction, which isn't a surprise. The fiction section is large enough that I'll have plenty to look through, but still small enough that it's theoretically possible that I could read literally everything in it. Maybe I'll try.

Anyway, current library haul is thus:

Truth and Bright Water by Thomas King. Not sure what this novel is about, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it. King is an excellent writer - definitely one of my favourite Native authors, and one of my favourite North American authors in general... his stuff has such a wonderful sense of humour to it. So I'm really looking forward to this. It isn't his most recent novel, but I think I'll wait a while before reading the next one - maybe the library will get the paperback when it comes out. (You all know that I hate hardcovers.)

Blood Sports by Eden Robinson. I've read one of this author's novels before, but I can't remember if it was this one, or if it was Monkey Beach. The plot doesn't ring a bell, but that's not much of an indicator, since my memory is terrible. But I do remember that I enjoyed this author's work, so I'm looking forward to this one.

Welcome to Night Vale: A Novel by Fink & Cranor. I am way behind on the podcast - I kind of fell off the listening wagon when Carlos was spending all that time stuck in the desert (...he isn't still stuck in the desert, I hope?) so I don't really know what's going on with that storyline now. As for the novel, I've heard mixed reviews, but I enjoyed the podcast enough that I figured there'd be no harm in trying the novel anyway... (I'm so glad the library had it, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered.)

Let's see, what else... Oh, yes.

There has been some discussion about setting up an SSSS community on Dreamwidth. After thinking about it, I figure... why not. So, I'm working on setting that up now. If it floats, then it'll definitely be filling a niche. And if it flops, well - no harm done.

I'm definitely planning to include infrastructure for anon participation, though, since the discussion/interest came from anon communities. That makes it a little bit more complicated than a regular comm, but as far as I can see, it's 100% doable. This should be interesting.

Actually, now that the NSFW board is in place over at SSSSForum, I think the above isn't actually needed. We have the Update Discussion thread, and we have a board for NSFW fanwork. And for everything else (anon posting etc) there's FFA. So the idea is off the table. I'll revisit it if it becomes necessary, but for now, no. :) Which is good.

I only made it halfway through the Welcome to Night Vale novel because I needed to take breaks every chapter or so. Otherwise, I just got overwhelmed, and my brain refused to process. There was a waitlist on the book at the library, so I couldn't renew it. I'm not actually sure that reading the whole book is necessary. My impression of it was that the, um, how to put it? Flavor maybe? The flavor was more important than the plot.

I have heard that it works particularly well as an audiobook, and I've put myself on the waitlist for that version at the library.

That sounds a bit like how the early episodes of the podcast were, maybe. Interesting. Well, I'll give it a go and see how I feel. I'm totally prepared to be disappointed, but one never knows.

I was pretty excited for the novel, I had it on pre-order almost as soon as that option was available, but... I don't know, I wasn't exactly disappointed with it, but. I guess I didn't think it lived up to the hype? And there was, well... there was a lot of hype. Maybe that kind of ruined it for me.

Ahh yeah, I can see how it would have such result under those conditions. I'm enjoying it so far, but I'm glad that I decided not to buy it.

He's out! Thankfully :) Good things have happened since then, but I've fallen behind has well ^^; I'm still waiting for my copy of the book to get here :o and it's curious how the hype around it died down, or maybe I'm not too involved in WTNV to know.

I hope it was still a good read though! Considering it's not strictly about WTNV at all-ish ^^;
