I have some dumb SSSS rarepair shipping feelings and I'm just going to... backdate this. And cut it. Since I'm a little bit embarrassed. And I don't want to bother my Flist with my dumb shipping thoughts. (Unrelated: Goddamn, I need to make more SSSS icons. Will have to get on that later. Maybe.)
So, Emil and Lalli would be incredibly adorable together, and I think I've already kind of implied that I like that. They have a lot of things that I like in a pairing - language barriers, personality differences, gradual friendship over an extended period of time, and so on. They are so fucking cute and I just can't handle it.
.... Buuuuut I'm also gradually becoming intrigued by the idea of Sigrun/Emil. Or, well, I guess the more likely scenario is Emil -> Sigrun. Hmm.
This pairing also has a ton of things that I like. Height difference (tall strong woman with a much shorter guy YES PLEASE), age difference (oho!), cultural/life experience difference, personality contrast, experienced fighter + newbie sidekick, two people who work closely together in dangerous scenarios, and so on. Well, that last one, "two people who work together", applies to Emil and Lalli too I suppose, but Lalli's method of operations is its own very particular thing. Emil/Lalli's "fire/magic" contrast appeals to me a lot on a very... sparkly, shiny level? But Sigrun/Emil's "stab/boom, HACK AND SMASH AND BLOW IT UP, KILL IT DEAD" method of fighting is just so WOW HOT A WHAT.
There are some barriers and obstacles to it actually happening that make the pairing even more interesting to me. Age is one, obviously, but that actually isn't the most interesting obstacle. The most interesting one for me is - rank/position in the team/whatever you want to call it. Sigrun is a goof, and she sometimes makes less-than-ideal decisions, but she's also the expedition's captain, and she's experienced as far as the dangers they have to deal with go. As far as Emil -> Sigrun is concerned, I can absolutely imagine rank/experience lending a certain something to attraction. Sigrun is strong, capable, and brave, and she's in a leadership position. Who wouldn't find that attractive? Plus, some of the scenes in the comic - won't link now but I'm thinking mainly of scenes where they were out together (both alone and/or with Lalli) where Emil was afraid, and Sigrun lent some firm-but-caring support. I can see that sinking in, in a particular way, even if it only happened a few times. (Who knows what will happen in the future as far as canon scenes goes. I'm just talking up to the end of ch7 for now of course.) But because Sigrun is his superior, Emil would be very well aware that this is... not an appropriate way for him to be feeling, and everything would have to be repressed. Keep it silent, keep it safe, don't let on. (Conceal, don't feel? Hah.)
As for Sigrun's feelings toward Emil, it's a lot harder for me to imagine it going in a reciprocal direction. There is the age thing and, again, rank. It's easy to imagine Emil crushing on his powerful superior, but not as easy to imagine Sigrun developing feelings for someone who's practically a kid, and who she happens to be responsible for. But I can imagine her becoming fond of him over time - I mean, hell, she's really friendly toward him already, she seems to consider him a buddy - and that could lead to something under the right conditions. Maybe. Especially if over time Emil developed into a braver, more capable fighter; her reaction to the way he blew everything up certainly was enthusiastic. ("Wasn't that the AWESOMEST?! You really have some viking blood in you!" Paraphrasing because I can't find the exact page) But even if some kind of feeling did surface, she would shove that shit down like whoa. It isn't appropriate, and the particular nature of the expedition just makes it even more inappropriate, and - well, she just wouldn't even consider it an option. And that part, repressing anything that might resemble anything more than friendship and camaraderie, appeals to me. Whether feelings would continue to be repressed under certain pressure - well, who knows.
I guess what I like about these two isn't really the idea of an eventual romance (I have Emil/Lalli for that, hah) but of an undercurrent of feelings percolating under pressure that builds up as they work together and support each other and save each other from danger. Multiple times. In various ways. The comic delivers on that front (for example, in ch5, 262, 263, 264) but I want more. I want Sigrun saving and protecting Emil, and Emil saving and protecting Sigrun, and a special kind of care and affection and trust developing along the way - and underneath that, other things that neither of them would dare to talk about, because they just can't.
Not sure how I would write it. Probably the above scenarios would be incorporated - danger, protecting each other. They're out alone, like in chapter 7. They run into more trouble than the expected - but they manage to get out of it because they work together well. ... I also have some vague ideas about Sigrun getting injured while protecting Emil from something, and after they manage to kill the troll and escape the danger, he has to support her as they make their way back to the tank. And maybe she has to lean on him. And maybe he feels guilty about it, because he knows the only reason she's hurt is because she was protecting him. But she acts like there's nothing wrong, that everything's fine. And they go off together.
...Of course there does not seem to be any fanwork for this pairing (that I can find easily, at least). OF COURSE.
