Chapter 6 is a bit of a breather. It's much shorter than Ch5, and nobody's in mortal danger. But that doesn't mean that nothing happens! For one thing, we're finally introduced to our sixth central character.
In this chapter, Our Heroes are safe and sound, but not without problems. A mishap with supplies has left them extremely short of food - and wouldn't you know it, the bridge broke when they were crossing it, remember that? I'm extremely curious as to how they're going to get out of this mess. But, that will be taken care of in the following chapters, I'm sure.
And we finally meet Reynir! He's adorable! I want to hug him! He's also terribly foolish and oh my gods, this is the worst place for someone like him to be. No useful profession, no immunity, no experience outside of his tiny rural community. How on earth is he going to get by?! ... On the upside, he seems to be the kind of person who will at least try to make himself useful. Downside is, I expect that his attempts to make himself useful will get him into trouble. But, let's go on, now.
The chapter opens with Lalli doing some magic! In other words, trying to get rid of the spirits (?) that have been clogging up the team's radio connection ever since they got out into the silent world. His spell starts off kindly, but when the spirits don't take the hint, he gets pretty forceful, I love it. :D Ahh, I love the top panel, and also the way he looks in the second-row panel on the right. Anyway - there is a translation of his spell here, but since Disqus sometimes doesn't load for me, I'm going to copy it below, since it's lovely and I don't want to lose it:
Harken to me spirits faded
gone astray from paths of Tuoni
with speech pure I now beseech thee,
pray with words of sweetest cadence.
Wander ways away from this place,
journey farther ever from here,
corners to of unknown alleys
neighbourhoods of other dwellings
This I utter,
thus command I:
Silence to thee
folk most vexing.
Or I shall now all abjure thee
spirit mine incite from dream-state,
stone of blood will cast upon thee
curse outsiders to the shadows!
"They're not dead!" So much faith in your team, guys. Pfft. Though to be fair, considering they sent a band of misfits out into a very dangerous environment with minimal ammount of supplies, I guess it's not surprising that they'd have low expectations. ... Also, Tuuri looks so adorable in the lower-right panels!
"We're out of food." So deadpan, Mikkel. But best to put it simply, since this is a pretty serious situation. ... It sounds like they're royally fucked. Unrelated, I love the way Sigrun looks in the centre panel; lots of cool movement there.
The whole blackmail thing makes me wish there were opportunity to learn more about Trond. I'm suddenly pretty intrigued by him. But, though we probably haven't seen the last of him, I doubt we'll get any meaty details; probably just hints at sketchiness. (Also, I love that top panel)
Sigrun, what, that's not how you use binoculars, they're the wrong way around...! I'm just going to sit here and laugh at her, oh, I love her. :D Must admit she looks terribly cool with her hair going all FWOOSH like that, though.
Wow that top panel looks so cool - I love how there are just certain pages with huge, visually stunning images of this ruined world. ... And then we get Sigrun, being her dear self. Even if she doesn't understand what that captain is saying, surely she can understand the tone, but she just lets it roll off her.
WHAT. 1. That isn't food 2. Oh shit 3. That poor guy's fingers!! 4. I love Emil's "What the shit?!" reaction when Reynir appears. A++.
Everything about this page is wonderful. Sigrun's reaction. Emil's wide-eyed WTF look. Mikkel's deadpan response. Reynir's mussed-up surprise and rising panic as it's pointed out to him just where, exactly, he was unloaded. Oh, dear.
Sigrun is SO pissed Though to be completely fair, Reynir really is a huge problem. Things I appreciate: Sigrun ordering Emil around, Lalli creeping, and Reynir's hair. Holy shit, FABULOUS hair, looks like Emil has some competition in that department. Speaking more seriously though, I hope for some kind of... contact/communication (somehow) between Reynir and Lalli eventually, considering the whole thing with the dream and whatnot. Was it a prediction? Was it magic? I don't know!
So, on the one hand, we've got Emil looming. And then on the other hand, we have Lalli creeping. And there's poor Reynir in the middle looking very uncomfortable. Ohhh dear. What I love, though, is Emil's reaction when Mikkel... clarifies it for him. "Why didn't anyone tell me!? I wouldn't have acted this way!" It comes back to some of what we saw from him in earlier chapters, the whole fixation on making a good impression and getting completely out of sorts when that doesn't work out. It's something I love about him, honestly. "We're mortal enemies now!" ... Come on, darling, don't be so melodramatic, I'm sure Reynir will forgive you.
"It's stupid. I'm stupid" Well, at least you admit it. ... He really didn't think things through. At all. (Also, top panel, Reynir looks absolutely lovely. I really like that.) Anyway, as for his backstory - (292, 293, 294, 295, 296, 297) ... He really is terribly naive. On the one hand, I can sympathize with him - especially since he realizes now what a hugely terrible idea it was. Considering his family experience, it's no wonder he'd want to see the world. But even spending time in Reykjavík would have been something, surely! A much smarter idea, at least. Or staying on the boat. But jumping into that crate... Argh, I just want to shake this dumb kid, seriously! ... And then there's the other half of me that just wants to pet him and tell him it'll be okay. (Even if it probably won't. He's really, really gotten the team into a huge mess.)
Oh dear, Sigrun is still pissed. ... I don't blame her one bit. Things I love in this page: Lalli creeping, Sigrun's face in the "NO! I refuse to keep him!" panel, and Mikkel talking with Tuuri in the background. I'm assuming that he's telling her what's going on with Reynir. This is one of those cases where she'll be very useful, since only she and Mikkel are able to communicate with Reynir. (... Oh dear, I suddenly realized that not only is Sigrun pissed, she's pissed off at someone she can't even communicate properly with. That makes the whole situation even worse.)
And a lovely final page - my favourite part is Lalli all curled up on the top bunk.
Well, I certainly have no idea what's going to happen next! So I'm really excited to get to chapter 7 (but won't be doing that until tomorrow, probably). But needless to say, they're all in a really bad situation, so they're going to need to take steps to make things less awful. ... And considering that their luck has been a little shaky so far, I expect things will get worse.
One thing that I'm really interested in is the potential for development between Reynir and Lalli. Lalli's obviously interested in this guy, and I have the feeling that he has a lot of questions. But any questions and answers will probably need to be fielded through Tuuri, all things considered. As for Tuuri, she's very sweet and hopefully she will be able to make Reynir feel less... awful... about everything, though as for actual reassurance, that's doubtful. But I'm definitely interested in seeing if friendship develops there. As for Emil - well. We've already seen that he's pretty upset about making a bad first impression. I'm sure they'll be able to patch things up, but how that will happen is something I'm not sure about. ... Sigrun, she and Reynir have like -9000 friendship points and I really don't foresee that changing any time in the future.
And now it's really hard to hold back from just plunging into chapter 7, but... I WILL RESIST. Because I'm rapidly running out of comic to read, sob.
