So, I've finally decided to get around to reading Stand Still, Stay Silent, that webcomic about the Nordic countries after the apocalypse. I'm trying to take my time with it, because I have a feeling that I'm going to love the entire thing, and I want to draw it out rather than binge-read most of it in one evening like I did with A Redtail's Dream.

...But I don't know if "pacing myself" will actually happen, because I've only read the prologue at this point, and so far it's so good. This is really promising. It's also a contrast to A Redtail's Dream, which has a really awkward start.

A Redtail's Dream was Sundberg's first major webcomic project. It shows. The prologue is one of its weakest points. It introduces too many characters at once, the dialogue flow is confusing, there is way too much dialogue all at once, and basically there is just way too many things happening all at once. The fact that the rest of the comic is pretty awesome makes up for it, as far as I'm concerned, but it is a clunky beginning, to be sure.

The opening for Stand Still, Stay Silent doesn't have this problem. At this point, I can't say how well it will hold in relation to the rest of the comic, but taken on its own, it's good. It's paced well; there's room to breathe, and room to get to know who, exactly, is being introduced and what, exactly, is going on. And I found myself wanting to know more about the people who were introduced, which is surprising. Since the rest of the comic takes place 90 years later, I'm not sure if we'll encounter them again. Probably not. (But if we do, don't tell me!)

I think, in fact, that most of the prologue could stand on its own as a singular story about a pandemic and resulting world depopulation as viewed through how it would affect the Nordic Countries. With the possible exception of the "90 years later" parts toward the end of the prologue - those don't fit quite as well into the "singular story" idea. But overall it's just really nicely coherent and self-contained. I was surprised that it was done that way, and that it was done so well.

And the art is gorgeous, of course. As always. It has improved from what we see in A Redtail's Dream, which is no surprise. There's quite a bit of distance between the beginning of aRTD and the beginning of SSSS.

Anyway. I'm excited to see what the comic proper is going to be like! And hopefully will not breeze through it too quickly. I want to savour it. This webcomic is still ongoing, which is part of why I hesitated so long to read it. I have trouble keeping up with things that are in progress. But... we'll see about that when I get to that point. Maybe it wouldn't be too hard to get into the habit of checking it every day, if it's worth it (which I think it will be).
