Over the Garden Wall - Some Thoughts

AHH so, I finally watched Over the Garden Wall. For those who haven't seen it yet: It's a cartoon miniseries about two brothers trapped in a strange wood and their attempt to get home. It's charming, and whimsical, and some parts are pretty creepy. 10 episodes, which run about 10 minutes each.
This is the kind of series that was made for me - I love whimsical and creepy things. Especially if the episodes are short. In some ways, it reminds me of Moomins - both in atmosphere and in terms of visual style.
My tumblr dash spoiled me for the twist near the end, but since it didn't spoil me for much beyond just what it is, I was like WHOA. That was... intense.
For a while there, I seriously thought that both Wirt and Greg wouldn't both make it out. That it'd be one or the other. I'm not sure why I felt that way - looking back, I don't think that's how it could have unfolded; it wouldn't have been as narratively satisfying, and too dark for a series like this. But I guess the fact that I did think that, even briefly, means the mood was pretty effective.
It took me way too long to understand what the heck was going on with the Woodsman and the Beast, not because of any failing on the show's part but because I tend to be a little unobservant when watching things for the first time. I'll have to watch it again and pay more attention. Maybe there's more things that I'll notice when watching it the second time around, since I know what's happening now. Little clues... perhaps.
... I found that the part with Greg in "Cloud City" or whatever it is was kind of grating. It's the only thing about the series that I didn't enjoy so much. I get what was going on there, but the visuals and the singing of that particular part was... not to my taste.
Anyway. So, yes. Basic impressions. A bit late to the party, but I guess I'm not the only one who's late. Regardless, I'm delighted. And I want to watch it again. Possibly sometime soonish. ACTUALLY what I would love would be a DVD release. As far as I can tell there aren't any current plans for that, but I'm crossing my fingers and hoping. I'd just love to be able to watch this on an actual television, y'know? Because the visuals are just so lovely, and it's good enough that I'd definitely want it in hard copy.
Man, I want to make tons of icons from this show. Anyway, if any of y'all haven't seen it yet, I do suggest giving it a short. It's pretty, charming, and short! :D And might give you an existential crisis or two, but that's just a side-effect.
