Oct. 16th, 2014 06:47 pmI'm really enjoying reading The Storm of War (that WWII nonfiction I mentioned a few entries ago) but man... one disappointing thing is that it doesn't discuss the Canadian effort much. And I get why - it's an overview book, and you can't possibly go into detail about every little thing - but it's just rather frustrating that whenever Canadians show up, we get maybe one sentence, and that's it.
"Oh and by the way, a bunch of Canucks got slaughtered, and in hindsight Dieppe really was a terrible idea, wasn't it"
... I might be rephrasing just a tad. But you get the gist.
And very little about the liberation of the Netherlands, which is very disappointing.
Obviously the solution here is to seek out books that specifically deal with what the Canadians did, but I'm still going to grump about it a little.

Date: 2014-10-17 04:24 am (UTC)Though to be fair, most of the Commonwealth gets shafted in this book, or referred to vaguely and collectively, so at least it isn't just us....

Date: 2014-10-17 03:38 am (UTC)(Though it does remind me that I really need to dust off my WIP about the Canadian Caper, which I started writing because I loathed Argo so much that it prompted me to start writing grudge-fic.)

Date: 2014-10-17 04:33 am (UTC)As for D-Day, there was mention of the rest! Fortunately. Though mostly that part was kind of skimmed and summed up as "And the other beaches were somewhat less of a mess than Omaha", which... fair enough, but y'know, tell us what happened.
Also - that fic sounds relevant to my interests. Hopefully you'll finish it eventually! Haven't seen Argo myself, but I tend to support grudge-fic in general, because passion and enthusiasm (of any kind...) and lead to wonderful things.
