Date: 2015-06-20 11:11 am (UTC)OMG to write in Norweigan is ambitious, good luck! I do think since it's germanic at least it's closer to enlish in some ways though. Finnish is nothing like english a lot of the time lol, it can be so complicated. My writing is always full of spelling mistakes still, it's taken a lot to adjust!
Yeah we were really underwhelmed, though I loved Georgia, Latvia and Serbia! I'm glad at least something halfway decent won, Sweden's stadium in Malmö hasn't even cooled off lol.
Mmm Finland has plenty of hosers trust me, they are a world phenomenon.
Ugggh Iceland I'm so jealous!!!! I've only been to Sweden so far to visit friends in Malmö, which is lovely by the way. If you fly in to Copenhagen you can take like a 15 minute train ride across the water to Malmö! You can hit up the city of Copenhagen first too, it's a great way to get 2 countries in one easy! Malmö is really pretty too, like a cute fairytale village in some parts. :) But I'm so happy you're getting to travel!!
So far in Finland I've been to Tampere (nice place, def worth a visit) and Helsinki quite a few times and I've also been further up North in the country where my gf's family lives. They're really nice to me, which makes me happy. And their house is so pretty! It's right on the river and they have a wood burning sauna and a fireplace and aah it was so lovely at Christmas... ;; Yesterday was Midsummer's Eve (as you might know already idk) so we went walking around the woods here. I really love Finnish nature a lot, it's so lush and green right now and everything looks like a storybook. So happy Juhannus/Midsummer Yuu!
I also really want to visit my Portugese friends too, and honestly if Russia wasn't so...possibly questionable for obvious reasons right now I'd want to visit St. Petersburg, it's only like a 3 hour train ride from us. And I want to take the boat to Estonia too! My British classmate visited Tallinn and tooks some pictures and man it really is so gorgeous. I'd like to visit Germany again too. And Iceland! One of my gf's classmates spend a semester in Iceland just now and I was super jealous, I think he missed home a lot tho haha. Ugh I just wanna go everywhere! I really like taking Finnish with the other immigrants because we're all from a lot of assorted countries, so I like hearing from them about where they lived and how they find Finland and about their culture...it's so nice to learn those things firsthand from others. Like I said man it's so weird I ended up here but at the same time I'm so happy every day to get up and learn more. It's a lot of fun right now!

Date: 2015-06-23 02:14 am (UTC)Norwegian is actually really close to medieval English in some ways, like sentence construction, and sometimes words that have fallen into discuse in English have a lot of resemblance. So it's easy for me to connect with it that way. But since I'm not speaking/writing it every day, it can be hard... Do you find that being surrounded with Finnish helps you a lot? I never really had experience with that kind of immersive environment.
Eurovision - I've heard from someone in Sweden that it probably won't be in Malmö this year. Maybe if this is true, it will be in Stockholm. I was toying with the idea of going, if it does end up being in Stockholm. But it's too early to say, really. >3> Could be interesting though.
YES ICELAND I was unfortunately only there for one day, but it was great. You should go some time if you're able to. 8) I would have liked to see a bit of the countryside but it was still pretty great.
OH YES you should take the boat to Estonia some time, it's pretty easy to do and also Tallinn is REALLY pretty. I took so many great photos while I was there. 8) Ahh but I hear you on wanting to go to Russia if it weren't so... Russia. It's a neat place, and as you said St Petersburg is lovely from what I've seen in photos/heard people saying, but... it's not on my to-do list any time soon because of reasons.
Sorry I took a while to get back to you! I was on vacation and such, and was distracted.

Date: 2015-06-26 03:57 pm (UTC)<3 They're probably happy that you're making a strong attempt.
I WILL I mean not going to Eurovision if the opportunity presented itself would just be passing up such a great opportunity. Done that before with a different thing, will be kicking myself for the rest of my life. So. :)
Oh yes I did see. Congratulations USA, way to go. <3
Oh, you're going to Tampere? Is it for the weekend? Got anything interesting planned? '3'

Date: 2015-07-05 02:06 am (UTC)Oh, travel - well, to be honest, I can barely remember anything that I ate when I was in Finland. Me and the friends I was traveling with, we were often on the go, so it was whatever we could find that we could stuff in our faces quickly. There were a lot of sandwiches. ;p But they were good sandwiches. I never did get to try those Karelian pastries that you say you like, I wanted to but it didn't come up. ALAS. Also I must say I have nothing good to say about Finnish coffee. IT TASTES TERRIBLE.
I will be honest: as far as food in the Nordic region in general goes, the things I appreciated most were 1. Swedish coffee (it tastes so good, I started drinking it black. ?! Before that I was a double double guy, always). 2. nordic-style cinnamon rolls are absolutely orgasmic. 3. The idea of eating cheese on toast at breakfast. That was a revelation. It was like the clouds parted and sunlight beamed down or something.
... I am easy to please, as you can see. >3>
Anyway. THANK YOU it was nice to have a day off in the middle of the week, that doesn't happen often. Since you aren't in the US I don't know if you would've done anything special for July 4th but I hope you at least had a nice weekend?
And it just occurs to me - how did you and your girlfriend come to know one another, anyway? Was it through fandom or something else?

Date: 2015-07-15 03:03 pm (UTC)But yeah Sweden and their coffee is good and I loooove Nordic-style cinnamon rolls so much. A cafe here makes them fresh and they are soooo amazing... ;~;
For July 4th and the week after we were up at a summer cottage and it was exciting! I saw my first wild hedgehog! It was so cuuuute! I got bit by many mosquitos though, I have bites all over... >~<
And yeah sort of! To break it down I met a friend from Portugal in th Inazuma fandom who introduced me to some Swedes who were friends with my girlfriend and then we met through twitter and began to talk, then began to talk every day via Skype and one day I was like, "I like you" and she said "I like you too" but we decided just an online relationship without meeting wasn't suitable for either of us so I said, "I have this crazy idea, I can buy a plane ticket with money I have from working, I can visit you!" And well...it worked out rather nicely for a crazy leap of a plan. ;)

Date: 2015-07-28 02:12 pm (UTC)90% of them are pot o coffee that's been on the burner since Obama was re-elected
Oh my god
You poor thing. But I'm laughing. :') I don't know why Finland is so bad at coffee, considering they drink so much of it over there. I might need to experience it again next year, since I'm 90% probably going to Stockholm and we might take a short trip to Finland... but it's all up in the air.
Wait wtf wild hedgehogs - oh right, they have those over there, don't they. It's hard to wrap my head around, I'm so used to only thinking of them as exotic pets. CUTE.
The story of how you met is cute but oh my god "crazy idea" is right, I can't even IMAGINE. You sure have some gumption, making that decision. I'm impressed. :D And I'm glad for you that it all worked out.
I don't think you mentioned, are you working over there currently, or is that in the plans for after you get better at the language?

Date: 2015-12-06 08:46 pm (UTC)Sorry for not replying for a billion years, I've been...tired. And lazy. Especially tired now because we have no sun. Also I'm still not working yet, but I have to start work practice type thing in January, so rn I have to find some place to take me...it is so stressful, I can't even get the courage for this in English!!
How are your holidays coming?
no subject
Date: 2015-12-06 11:51 pm (UTC)Nah, it's okay, stuff happens! I'm just glad you did get around to it eventually. I've been feeling very blah and tired and lazy and not-social myself, too, so I think I know where you're coming from.
AHH that work practice thing sounds definitely stressful, but if it works out it could be great. It'll be difficult but I'm sure you can do it! Believe in me who believes in you! ;D
Anyway, my holidays are going great so far, though I need to do a bit more shopping I think. I joined about a million exchanges (well, okay, only a couple) and then added extra stuff on top of that so I'm verrry busy giftfic-wise, but it feels good. Probably not going to be doing anything special at christmas, just the usual stuff.
What about you?
no subject
Date: 2015-12-08 03:00 pm (UTC)Ooooh yes, gotta get the old fic factory pumpin! I didn't join any exchanges but I'm having fun thinking of stuff to send people back home, and I can't wait to impress Hanna's parents with my language ability, the last time they spoke to me in summer I was a wee Finnish baby.

Date: 2015-12-11 01:00 pm (UTC)Also - AHH THAT SOUNDS WONDERFUL, you're progressing so quickly! WAY TO GO. You're working on it every day, right? It pays off! :D You'll be a badass Finnish speaker in no time, haa.
(Thanks for linking that, because I had heard of the levels but never looked them up. Lol, I'm like an A2 in Norwegian mayyybe. This is what happens when one does not practice)
I wrote too much. And now I want to do anything but write. Guhhh [/collapses] And I still have a little bit of RL christmas shopping to do... this season is exhausting.
Good luck getting all of yours done; you should probably mail things soon if you're sending anything back, we're getting close to xmas. D: AHH YES her parents will be so impressed though, if you've learned so much! Though how is your reading vs speaking? I find one tends to be easier than the other....

Date: 2015-12-16 01:14 pm (UTC)there's such a thing as writing too much??? no go go yuu, you can do it! finish all the fics! honestly my speaking is understandable but still full of mistakes sometimes haha. reading i'm good at too usually, it's writing and understanding that are hardest. writing is like, my spelling is still horrid )': hearing is hard because sometimes i understand what they mean but i'm unsure if i heard right, or i hear wrong and miss an important word that changes the context of something. and then there are people who babble on and i can't catch anything so i just smile and nod lmao......(i need to sharpen myself, i'm getting a lot better but i'm going to try to take the kansalaisuus test in april because school will pay the exam fee that way. i can't turn in the results if i pass yet, but once i've been here for 4 years that passing test grade will be the 'admit 1 for dual citizenship'!! ;) but you need at least 1 form of communication to people and one of understanding, i.e. if you can listen and write or read and speak well, that's good, but if you can only listen and read or write and speak, you fail because those don't work as both-way communication. )
and yeah lol my parents will be getting new years cards probably...whoopsies! they won't mind though, i'll skype with them on xmas anyway. (after i take my turn in xmas sauna, of course.)

Date: 2018-08-09 02:23 am (UTC)Things are going pretty good for me. I have a drivers license now (big accomplishment, it was hard). And I fulfilled a nerdy dream by going to Eurovision live in Sweden. ;)
It's possible I might drop by Helsinki in the next few years - who knows! - so I might very well send you a message if that happens. Maybe we could get coffee or something. (Or... considering Finnish coffee... maybe not coffee. ;p )

Date: 2018-08-10 07:26 am (UTC)and yes let me know! and don't worry, i know where to find semi decent coffee around here ;) or tea, if that's your preferred poison!
