Date: 2011-03-22 08:28 pm (UTC)I was talking to Uni awhile back and she mentioned Pratchett in passing which reminded me I wanted to read some of the Discworld series. I've been avoiding it because there are just so many books, but I figure if they can be read on their own, then I don't have to read them all anyway... I could just stick to a single storyline or something.
Anyway, forgot about it for awhile, and then the topic of fantasy novels came up and reminded me again. And I just finished off the last book I own, so I kind of have to order more anyway. I'm not really sure which ones to start with though. ;3; I guess what I'm saying is I need some recs, either your favorites or somewhere to start? Or you can just punt me and tell me to look up stuff, myself.
I have some other books I'm going to order too, but they're not really for entertainment as much as research, so yeah. Might get World War Z too, though. Thumbs up or thumbs down? 'Cause you know I've got this horrible habit of reading about things that scare me shitless. But I can save it for later if it's just eh.

Date: 2011-03-22 10:18 pm (UTC)Let's see... One thing I would suggest is picking one book from each storyline. Or pick the "starters" for a few different storylines. That way, you get a (nearly) complete overall view of the series, and who is involved in it, and the stories and the types of stories contained. The main reason I suggest this is because that's how I did that (though it had more to do with what was available to me in the library at the time than anything else), and it worked very well.
From each line, I'd suggest the following, though by and large these suggestions are the first I read, and the ones that got me hooked on each story (and by extension the series itself). (And if more than one is listed, then those are all 'favourites', but the first is the one I read first)
Rincewind/Wizards novels: The Colour of Magic, The Last Continent
Witches: Lords and Ladies, Carpe Jugulum
Death: Hogfather
The Watch: Jingo, Feet of Clay
Industrial: Going Postal, Monstrous Regiment
Ancients: Pyramids
Tiffany/Young Adult: Wee Free Men [considered part of the Witches narrative by many, but I consider Tiffany's novels part of a separate storyline]
Let's see, what else. Oh yes -- it's possible to tailor the storylines you read to existing tastes you might have. In general, the different narratives satirize different things. The Watch novels (not surprisingly) often satirize mystery narratives and the police force. The Ricewind/Wizards novels poke fun at wizardry (of course) but the focus is often also on academia. Others, like Going Postal and Making Money, take on things like economy and government institutions.
I'm kind of reluctant to push you to read the Rincewind novels, because they are disliked by a lot of Discworld fans. Actually many of Pratchett's early novels aren't all that popular in comparison to some of the later ones. On the other hand, I'm extremely fond of the Rincewind narrative, and of Rincewind as a character, and the first Discworld novel I happened to read, also the first in the series, The Colour of Magic, is about him, and it's what made me fall in love with the series so completely. So... I suppose the conclusion is this: I love it, but many people do not, and you might or might not.
Among other readers, the Watch narrative is the most popular (and I enjoy it very much too) though I will say that one of the later ones (Thud) is not as good as the rest, and while generally one can just pick up a Discworld book and read it regardless of order, I would advise not to read Night Watch unless you've read other Watch novels.
The Witches stories are also very popular. As I mentioned above, I consider the YA Witch narrative to be separate from the regular Witches stories; the first is about three grumpy old women (all of whom I absoltel adore), whereas the Tiffany novels are about a witch-in-training and a bunch of grumpy, tiny blue hooligans. I will say, with regard to the Tiffany novels, Wee Free Men made me cry -- but that might be because of certain personal attachments I have, and might not have the same result with another person.
Hmmm. That's all I can think of for now. If you've any other questions, feel free to ask -- there is probably something I've forgotten.
Oh, and re: your end note about World War Z. I did enjoy it, and I do recommend it. However, I did find some parts of it very disturbing, and would suggest reading it during daytime hours.

Date: 2011-03-22 11:46 pm (UTC)I think I've actually seen you complaining about people's opinion of The Colour of Magic on twitter before, haha. I was planning to start with that one since it was the first and I probably still will, and if it turns out I don't like it at least I'll know the other books are different.
But anyway, I think I know where I'm going with this now. Good thing I asked, or I would've just picked a storyline and stuck with that. But I think I'll get one from a few different ones to begin with, like you said.
Also, World War Z: noted. o7 I'll try not to read it in the dark.
Did I mention you are awesome?

Date: 2011-03-23 12:22 am (UTC)One thing about Colour of Magic: Not only is it different from the other novels, it's very different. I'm talking in style, in texture, in subject matter, in everything. Pretty much the only thing that rings the same with later novels is Rincewind's characterization (though that changes a bit -- but one can put that down to development). And in general, it seems CoM is more of a general satire on fantasy novels (... and the tourism industry) whereas the later stuff, hmm. Digs deeper? Is more complicated? Come to think of it, it's been ages since I last read it; I might be making it seem as if there is more difference than there actually is. But then again, there's nearly 30 years of difference between Colour of Magic and Unseen Academicals (the most recent non-YA novel), so of course there is some... difference.
Oh, and while I'm talking about Pratchett's work, Nation is not Discworld, nor is it really fantasy, but it is excellent. And The Carpet People is also non-DW but is fantasy and is very, very good. And the Johnny Maxwell series is good too, if you like YA novels with stuff like science fiction and time travel.
Pff I know I'm tl;dring a lot but... well. Pratchett's work in general is just something I'm so fond of. I came into it at a young age and still haven't lost interest in it. And it has influenced myself and my writing a great deal, though with regard to writing it's much less obvious now than it used to be (those works will not see the light of day, ever).

Date: 2011-03-23 02:05 am (UTC)Aha, and I'm just looking for stuff to read in general, they don't necessarily have to be Discworld (or fantasy for that matter, though I will admit it takes up the majority of my bookshelf), but it's something I've wanted to read for a while. Anyway, I looked those two up and they both sound interesting! *3* ...Annnd I just looked up Johnny Maxwell also and remembered I wanted to read Only You Can Save Mankind too. Honestly, I hear about all these books I want to read and forget about them five minutes later, it's ridiculous. /makes a goddamn list this time
And tl;dr all you want, I certainly don't mind. It's interesting. I knew you liked his writing, but I didn't know you were so passionate about it. Definitely picked the right person to ask.
no subject
Date: 2011-03-23 02:59 am (UTC)I hear ya' on wanting to read things but then forgetting. Make a list! ... 'Only you can save mankind' was excellent, by the way. :V Hmm, come to think of it, I find that in terms of texture (and feel and whatnot) the Johnny Maxwell books, as well as the Carpet People, have a similar "feel" to them as Colour of Magic and the other very early Discworld books, considering they were written earlier in Pratchett's career. There is quite a distance between those ones and, say, Night Watch or Monstrous Regiment or Nation for that matter.
And... with regard to my feelings on his writing, "Passionate" is a good word for it. To be honest, I wanted to do my honours thesis on his work (Though not all of it, of course -- I'd considered picking maybe three novels). The main thing that prevented me from doing so is that there wasn't a professor at my school who was familiar enough with it to be an adequate supervisor for the subject, sigh.
Fuck, I forgot to log out.
... Well, I suppose Norway would like Pratchett too. ;p

Date: 2011-03-23 04:16 am (UTC)List, made. o7 Ahh, there's a lot. I'll go through and see what I want to buy the most tomorrow since s'getting late now. Anyway, I'm not surprised. If someone writes for that long of course their writing is going to change, though whether it's improvement or not is a matter of opinion, I suppose. But I don't think it's a bad thing. I know I'd get bored if I read a bunch of books and they were all written exactly the same way. ...But ngl, I might be too blunt to even notice. I'm err, definitely lacking in the literature/English department.
Anyway, that's a shame. To be honest, I don't really know what goes into an honours thesis, but I bet it would have been easy for you since you care about it so much, maybe even fun. But, well, it's in the past now.
And considering you're practically Norway, I do not doubt it one bit.

Date: 2012-11-04 02:02 am (UTC)Yuriy: He has shoulder-length medium brown hair. It's thick and has a very slight wave to it.
His face is a little bit thin and pointy and his eyes are brown and tired-looking. His lips are thin, and his nose is on the large side (think "Russia Nose"). His hands have long fingers, but they aren't pretty and delicate; more wiry-looking. (In fact, the rest of his figure is wiry-looking as well). He's a bit too skinny. He wears a lot of layers of clothing; he likes wearing turtlenecks, and an open sweater over that, and a scarf. His clothes are a bit worn-looking, but not too shabby. I don't know how old he is; let's say around 30.
Yulia: Her hair is long, down to mid-back. It is brown, thick, and straight. Her bangs are swept to her left side. Her face is wider than her brother Yuriy's, but her facial features are similar - she smiles more than he does, though. She's slim, but very sturdy, and a bit broad-shouldered. She likes to dress comfortably; she's fond of wearing cardigans. Generally, she looks serious, but kind. Kind of has a school-teacher look about her. She's a little bit older than Yuriy, but only by a few years.
Jacques: He has short black hair, a bit messy, but straight. The style makes him look on the young side; it's cut to about chin-length. He's thin, but his face is a bit round. His eyes are wide and cheerful and dark. His nose is pointy and he's usually smiling. He wears round glasses, but I haven't decided if they're only for reading or not. His clothing is on the casual side, and runs toward the "button-down shirt open over a t-shirt, with jeans" look. He's in his early 20s.

Hatoful fic idea?
Date: 2013-04-29 03:57 am (UTC)Re: Hatoful fic idea?
Date: 2013-04-29 03:58 am (UTC)Re: Hatoful fic idea?
Date: 2013-04-29 04:38 am (UTC)But I digress.
The fic would be based on Anghel's route. Now, I don't know if it works this way otherwise, but if you have a job in the library while doing Anghel's route, at one point Anghel shows up there and talks to Nageki. (Well, they don't have a conversation; Anghel speaks to him, and Nageki is shocked because someone other than Hiyoko can see him.)
So, that's the base for it.
Basically the premise is that Anghel keeps coming to the library after that, because he feels that some insight into defeating the "Dark Magician Wallenstein" might be found there, and he can sense that Nageki is not an ordinary bird. At first Nageki is frustrated and annoyed by him, even if he's glad that there is someone who can see him, but eventually he tells him a time that he can come (because knowing when to expect him means he won't interrupt anything, and Anghel seems to like having an appointed Time to meet with the keeper of the grimoires), and he makes sure that the window is open so that Anghel can fly in.
Eventually, Nageki starts to make sense of Anghel's ramblings - partly by suggesting that Anghel draw what and who he is talking about. He might not know who the heck "Wallenstein" is, but he recognizes Shuu when he sees him on paper. This helps him remember what happened in the past, and eventually they piece together everything based on Nageki's knowledge and what Anghel knows of the current situation (which isn't much, except that Shuu is planning something... Which would be enough for them both to think that the plan might be going into action again)
After that, Anghel goes to defeat the Dark Sorcerer. He goes on his own, but is joined by Hiyoko who had been looking for him (like in the game) and through the power of collective hallucination manages to "Defeat" Shuu. ... This defeat probably actually consists of something more mundane than powerful magic attacks, such as managing to overpower him together, seizing the records he has in his desk, and destroying the virus he had cooked up to give to Ryouta. Hiyoko doesn't know about the virus at this point, but Anghel convinces her that he needs to undertake that part on his own. (Maybe she contains Shuu while he does it.) For the sake of plot, let's say that the entire remaining sample is destroyed, and there is nothing left of that experiment. The Dark Magician Wallenstein is truly defeated.
After that, after the dust has settled a little, Anghel and Edel Blau - errr I mean Hiyoko - run back to the library, and he and Nageki go through the records and explain what's going on to her (well, Nageki does most of the explaining, really. You wouldn't want Anghel to explain anything to you ever). Hiyoko wants to tell professor Nanaki, because somebody needs to know about this, and she feels he is trustworthy. So, she leaves the library with the intent of doing that. Anghel stays behind to thank Nageki for his help in defeating Wallenstein, and gives him a new, grandiose title fitting for his role. (Um).
I think it would end there, because the thought of dealing with the fallout of Kazuaki/Hitori finding out about all this makes my head hurt. And the focus in this story would be on developing some kind of friendship between Anghel and Nageki, anyway.
Re: Hatoful fic idea?
Date: 2013-04-29 03:56 pm (UTC)Anghel and Hiyoko don't do anything to Shuu after they defeat Wallenstein, but they get him out of the way for a while. Tie him up and gag him, probably, and maybe there is a convenient closet to stuff him in.
While Anghel is in the library talking to Nageki, Hiyoko goes to tell Kazuaki what happened. He is very very interested, and seems wide awake, but otherwise... fine... mostly. Hiyoko leaves him some of the documents for his perusal. (Though she probably does not mention that they have the doctor tied up in a closet somewhere)
Shortly after, Hiyoko and Anghel regroup in a hallway and try to decide what to do with the Doctor. Anghel wants to "seal the evil forces inside the den of evil" I.E. just leave him there, but Hiyoko insists on going to at least check on him because even with everything it wouldn't be right to just leave him there. So they go back to the infirmary, and on the way someone else joins them (Yuuya? It doesn't have to be him, but I don't think Hiyoko and Anghel could handle both adults alone)
They get there, and Kazuaki/Hitori has found Shuu. Shuu managed to escape from where he was tied up, but that isn't all that helpful because Kazuaki's trying to kill him (and has probably already succeeded in injuring him). The students manage to pull Kazuaki off of Shuu, restrain both of them, and redirect Kazuaki/Hitori by convincing him that he can talk to Nageki, and that Nageki is in the library. Easier said than done, but the power of hallucination is at work here.
They leave Yuuya to patch up Shuu, and Hiyoko and Anghel take Kazuaki/Hitori to the library, which is thankfully empty except for Nageki. They talk - well, Hitori can't hear Nageki at first, that is, the real Nageki, but through the combined efforts of Hiyoko relaying his dialogue and Anghel being Anghel, eventually Hitori can not only hear him, but see him - or at least, he thinks he sees him. One can never really tell when it comes to collective delusion.
... They talk. And it's similiar to that scene in BBL, with Nageki telling him that what he wants is for Hitori to be happy. The main difference is that there is no immediate threat, so it's a calmer scene, easier, less frenzied even though Hitori is in the process of falling apart. Eventually, he understands, and the shadow's gone. It's time to pick up the pieces.
The ending scene would take place later. A few weeks? Months? Not sure about details but there would be a sense that things have wrapped up and that everything is going in a good direction. The threat of Doom has left. Snapshots of the characters going about their lives - and Anghel and Nageki in the library (because this story is partly about them being friends isn't it) talking about... something. Maybe Nageki is reading Anghel's manga and giving him some much too honest concrit, hah.
Life goes on. :)

Flamig bananas and a coffee shop AU scenario
Date: 2013-04-30 07:08 pm (UTC)Re: Flamig bananas and a coffee shop AU scenario
Date: 2013-04-30 07:08 pm (UTC)Re: Flaming bananas and a coffee shop AU scenario
Date: 2013-04-30 08:12 pm (UTC)It feels a tad odd to call it a coffee shop AU because it isn't necessarily centred around a coffee shop; it just takes place in a coffee shop. That is, there is a cafe, and some of the characters work there, but it isn't about the barristas. Oh, and the characters are humans in this. I guess it's a regular-world, aged-up human-characters, cafe AU.
It's run by whatshisname (that bird in the same who offers you a job) and Ryouta and Hiyoko work there. But this isn't about them. ;)
Anyway. Nageki is a book critic. He does write, as well; mostly nonfiction and short stories. But he hasn't had any success with the market, so for the time being he takes work writing book reviews and editorials, mostly freelance. Occasionally he thinks about getting a "real" job, that is, a steady occupation, but his health isn't so hot and it just gets worse when he's stressed out, so it's for the best if he just does what he can and takes what comes. He lives with his brotherly best friend Hitori, who has a steady job, so he doesn't have to worry too hard about making ends meet, though sometimes money is a little tight. It kind of gets lonely working at home all day, so he goes to the cafe to get his writing done. He isn't a very sociable person, but it's kind of nice to be around people, and the barristas are very pleasant, and he's managed to strike up a sort-of-but-not-quite friendship with the girl who works there. Sometimes he thinks about asking her out, but then he doesn't. (It isn't as if he can ask her if she'd like to go have coffee with him.)
Anghel is a first-year art student at one of the local universities. Well, his name isn't really Anghel, but it's what he likes to be called by; it's his pen name, and the name he hopes to be known by when he makes it big with his graphic novel series. He works really hard, but he's super absorbed in the universe that he created, and people tend to think that he's a little bit weird. His fashion sense is kind of off the wall and in some ways it seems like he isn't all that mature. He's very serious about art, but in some ways it seems like he's serious about it in all the wrong ways. Sometimes he likes to go to the cafe to do sketches. As for the manga, well - the art isn't so bad, but the writing is terrible.
Re: Flaming bananas and a coffee shop AU scenario
Date: 2013-04-30 08:13 pm (UTC)One day, while at the cafe, Anghel catches sight of Nageki and recognizes him. Nageki had written some graphic novel reviews for a local newspaper, and as those articles often have photos of the reviewer alongside (if they're a regular)... yeah, he recognizes him. Quick as a wink, he's right up in Nageki's grill, insisting that he be the first to read and review the novel of the fallen angel of Judecca (and all this other nonsense). Nageki is understandably baffled and kind of annoyed and turns him down, saying he really doesn't have time.
Well, that's the start of it. But Anghel is not about to let go of this idea so easily! He might have received a few snide comments from the internet and from his classmates but surely a review from a Real! Book! Reviewer! will tell him the truth.
... Never mind that this Nageki Fujishiro generally only reviews graphic novels/manga with a Serious and Literary Subject (stuff like Age of Bronze comes to mind.... anyway). That is completely immaterial as far as Anghel is concerned.
The next time Nageki goes to the cafe to work, Anghel is there, and before Nageki can get one word in there is a big fat home-printed copy of sketched/drafted manga volume slapped right down on his table, and Anghel's insisting that he read it and tell him what he thinks. And Nageki wants to refuse, but this kid seems so earnest about it, and - well, it isn't very often that people notice him, especially not right out of the blue. It's kind of nice. So he agrees to it, but not without making sure that Anghel knows how reluctant he is, and that he really does not have a lot of time on his hands. (This is a lie, he totally does.)
Well, Anghel is overjoyed, and perfectly confident that he will find that it is a masterpiece. Nageki is skeptical, and takes it home to read it.
It's just as terrible as he thought. Well, almost. Overblown, cliche in all the worst ways, overly complicated, with poorly-written dialogue. But he keeps turning the pages, and there's a seed of something in there, and he has to admit that he's curious. Besides, the art, though it's clearly a draft, isn't that bad.
The next time they meet up, Nageki is still a bit cool toward Anghel. He sets the manuscript on the table and calmly explains to him every impression he had about it - everything. And Anghel listens, looking more dismayed by the minute - until finally Nageki turns it around and, once again, calmly explains to him everything he thinks that he got right and how he might be able to turn it into something better than what it is.
The truth hurts, and Anghel leaves the cafe with his manuscript in hand and a bit of drama in general and Nageki isn't really surprised that something so overblown came from this one.
... But about a week later, he receives an email with an offer. Well, partly an offer, partly a suggestion, partly a request.
The first volume of the manga is eventually published. And when it is, there are two names on the cover: Anghel Higure and Nageki Fujishiro.

This is going to be a little bit long, so be sure to read everything carefully! I've provided screenshots in order to give a visual aid for everything. :)
Requesting
If requesting is open, you can submit your prompt to the kink meme by clicking "post a new comment" in the most recent part. To find out which part is the most recent one, go to
Request Format
Requests must be anonymous, and they must be in the proper format. The format is used so that people can tell at a glance what your prompt is.
Subject line: the pairing and the prompt/kink. If you forget the pairing or prompt from the subject line, your prompt will be screened from view and you will have to re-post it in the correct format. You need to have some kind of prompt or kink; "anything" is not accepted.
Body of the prompt: The important details about your request. Try to keep it no longer than 200 words. You can have up to 3 bonuses, which are extra things that aren't required for the prompt but would be nice to have.
Example
Subject: Belgium/Romano - Haircurl play
Prompt: Belgium likes to tease Romano in bed by playing with his haircurl and making him squirm. Established relationship, please. Canon universe, not AU. Bonus: creative use of Belgium's hair-ribbon for bondage.
Requesting and Request Freezes
Requesting on the kink meme is only open at certain times. There is a request freeze after every 5 pages of requests on the most recent part. After 50 fills have been reported to the Fill List, requests are open again. The mod will announce request freezes at the top of the most recent Part and on the last page of that Part.
Other Things To Know When Requesting
*Only include one request per comment. If you want to make two requests, you will need to make two separate comments for them. This ensures that the kink meme is easy to navigate.
*If there is anything you don't want, it might be helpful to include it in your prompt. For example, some people really hate AUs or the use of human names in fic, but fillers don't always check about this before filling, so it can be helpful to include things like "nation names only" or "canon universe only" or "human AU is okay" in your prompt so that potential fillers know beforehand.
*Wait at least 6 months before requesting events based on Real Life tragedies. Please use courtesy when requesting things related to recent/current events.
*"Any prompt/kink" prompts aren't allowed. Make sure that you have some kind of prompt or kink in addition to your pairing, even if it's vague. (Note: some old prompts have "anything" at the prompt; these were submitted before this rule was in place.)
Example of a prompt that is not accepted:
Norway/Seychelles - Anything
I'd like to see anything involving this pairing.
Example of a prompt that is accepted:
Norway/Seychelles - Fluff
I'd like to see something with these two being sweet and romantic toward each other. Smut is not required but it is appreciated!
*"Any pairing" prompts are allowed. "Any character" prompts are also acceptable. If you have a few characters that you want to be options, you can format your prompt as "various possible pairings" or "choose from a list".
Examples of prompts that are accepted:
Any/Any - Exploring geographical differences
I'd like something exploring attraction between nations with very different geographical features. Do northern nations find tropical climates sexy? Any pairing is fine as long as it has two nations with different geographical features.
(Almost) any pairing - Sexy videotaping
Two nations make a porno. Keep it lighthearted and silly but still hot. Almost every pairing is fine, but please no Netherlands/Belgium or Norway/Iceland.
Pick from a list - Bondage, Blindfolds, & Teasing
B blindfolds A, ties them down, and teases them mercilessly. Use one of these pairings: Netherlands/Belgium, Norway/Denmark, or Australia/America.
