Opened up an old, unfinished draft to take a look at it.
The opening paragraph has the main character answering a call on a landline.
Whew. This thing sure is old. But it's not that old; it's from 2015, and was supposed to take place around that time, so I don't really have many excuses for this.
Ah, well, I'll set that aside, it'll be easy to fix later.
It goes without saying that all of them would have mobiles. But.
Giving it some thought, I could buy the idea of Norway still also having a landline. But I don't think Germany, the other character in this fic, would have the number for it. And even if he did have the number for it (in the case of an established relationship) I don't think he would call him on it. So as much as I like the paragraphs I have, I will have to change it. (At least I didn't write Norway using a corded phone....)
Speaking of which, though. Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden on the other hand, probably would have Norway's landline number, and during the '00s-10s might have accidentally called him on it by default out of habit and muscle memory. Probably not so much now though.
I'm not sure whether Germany would still have a landline or not. Leaning toward yes, but I can't put my finger on why. He's a character that I think I have a decent feel for in terms of like, emotions and things that they would do when interacting with someone else (or at least the characters I'd typically write him interacting with) but not in terms of like... cultural stuff or day-to-day decisions about things he would do for himself. Plus, he lives with Prussia, which adds another angle to it.
As for Denmark, I definitely think he doesn't still have a landline. I think that could be because I can imagine Denmark moving his primary residence in the past 30 years; when I think about modern Denmark, he doesn't have his big house any more, just the Copenhagen flat. So he probably made the switch to cut out the landline entirely at some point. Norway, on the other hand, I picture him staying in the same residence out in the countryside that he's been in for... well, a very long time. (There is the Oslo apartment too, but he doesn't live there, you know?)
I'm not sure about Iceland. A lot of people imagine him as being comparatively "with it" in terms of personal use of technology, but I think he might not be so much. Like, yes, he does have a mobile. But he might not have modernized some other parts of his day-to-day life.
Sweden is completely a mystery to me. I haven't really solidified how I feel about where he lives. We do know that he has at least one residence in Stockholm's old town - that is canon if you consider "Cleaning with Prussia" to be canon - but that doesn't mean it's his primary residence, or that whatever his current primary residence is has been so for a long time. But if he does have a landline it wouldn't be in the gamla stan flat, it'd be at whatever the other residence is.

Date: 2025-10-23 07:54 am (UTC)Five-minutes-into-the-past is a pretty interesting setting to read! Intentionally or not...Norway does give the impression of having been in the same place forever...or at least since the mid-1900s? I've almost forgotten that "Cleaning with Prussia" was ever a thing. Curious what you eventually decide for Sweden!

Date: 2025-10-23 12:54 pm (UTC)For Sweden - I've used the gamla stan location at least once in fic, but I have been to the street shown in the canon and it's such a weird place to have an apartment. On the other hand, the location is very convenient for someone like a nation, and the entrance would be in some kind of quiet little street with not much else on it, making it at least somewhat private (so basically I guess if you're crazy enough to have an apartment in gamla stan that particular spot isn't totally awful). I dunno!

I wonder if there's some deeper metaphor worth exploring here. What does it mean to have that connection with others, is it like a Special Red Phone or something in a nation's house, do you get all the numbers by default just by being a nation and what does it mean for a new number to come online or to get a busy signal or - gasp - the "doo doo doo The number you have dialed is not in service."
oh no I want this now /o\
