Judo adventures - Special summer session
Aug. 13th, 2025 10:57 pmAttending: Me, Mo, TJ & C. J-sensei instructing.
I hadn't planned to go back to class until the season starts in September, but VP specifically asked me to come today because there was going to be someone shooting a documentary at the dojo and they needed as many people to come as possible.
It turns out the "documentary" is more like a special about Fort McMurray and all the things that there are to do up here. The person making it immigrated from Brazil a couple of decades ago, and the judo club is one of the ways that he found community here.
They filmed some stuff where the documentary guy and VP talked while we did warmup in the background. And they filmed some warmup in general. But they didn't get anything with us doing any actual judo, unfortunately.
As for the class itself, it was mostly arm bars. We worked on one from guard position, that involved shrimping from the bottom to get a leg over to flip your opponent into the relevant position.
After that, we worked on something called a "flying arm bar", where you get a grip on top of the left sleeve rather than below, then bring your right leg up (bent), drop down perpendicular, and kind of roll into the relevant position. It's challenging, but interesting, and apparently very effective in competition.
I won't be going back to class until September, but it was nice to have one day in class. ...Oh man, I'm super out of shape, though. Eughh.
