There was a training camp or tournament or something happening in Calgary today, so I was the only one in class. But that's okay, because we got a lot done.
Started off with kind of a freeform training. He tried to grip me; I tried to block. He had me enter with various techniques. We went through balance breaking and turn ins. It was all kind of like randori but more structured.
Part of the issue is that I can't throw T-sensei due to his bad knees, so I wasn't able to follow through. We did put down the crash mat for a bit and do a couple full throws, but not for long.
After that, I asked him to give me an introduction to kata. This is something I know I will need to know eventually, but we don't cover it in regular class, so I figured this was a good time to learn it. We went through the various throws that you need to learn - both right handed and left handed, in the formal style. And then worked a small amount on the groundwork.
I think for the future I might look up specifically what is required, and then try to focus on it more. At least the groundwork, because that's challenging for me.
We did discuss that it's good to start working on this now; that way, when it comes time to do the relevant test, I will have a more thorough knowledge of it. Since I can't easily go to kata classes due to that kind of thing only usually happening in Edmonton etc, that seems like the best approach for now.
So, even though it was just us, it was a very productive class and I'm so glad that I went.
