[Books] Piranesi
Dec. 27th, 2024 09:59 amI finished reading Susanna Clarke's Piranesi this morning.
Wasn't quite sure what to expect going in; I've read Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and I guess I expected more of the same, but it isn't like that one at all. Piranesi is a short, dreamy novel, kind of meandering and odd. Basically it's a parallel universe novel featuring a narrator exploring a labyrinth of hundreds of halls and vestibules constantly awash with tides. It's hard to get into more detail about it without spoiling it, so I won't.
It's very focused on the visuals, the atmosphere. I don't always like that kind of thing, but I felt it really worked here. Honestly, I found it very beautiful. And I also found this book very difficult to put down - I basically devoured it. It's a short novel, and I didn't feel that it outstayed its welcome.
Anyway, I did enjoy it, and would rec if you haven't managed to get around to it yet. Though definitely would remind that it's nothing like JSaMN.
Earlier this year, Laika acquired the film rights for this title*. Animation is definitely the way to go for this one, though personally my first choice of studio would have been Cartoon Saloon (Secret of Kells, Wolfwalkers) over Laika (Coraline, Kubo and the Two Strings). But that's just a nitpick and I'm sure the result will be stunning. Laika's stop-motion films are awesome works of art, so I'm really interested in how this will turn out, though obviously it's going to be a long time before we see anything come out of this.
