War Diary - Yevgenia Belorusets
Jun. 28th, 2023 08:44 pmI ask all those who keep us in their thoughts - commit to memory the names of these unknown places in Ukraine. These are towns and villages where nobody could imagine a catastrophe of this magnitude. Very often these are the places where people go to start a new life with the hope of a new home. These places belong to us all.
- Excerpt from Yevgenia Belorusets' War Diary. The places referenced in this particular paragraph are Irpin and Bucha.
I finished War Diary recently. It's this author's diary of the first few months of the war in Ukraine, from February 24 to April 05, accompanied by the author's photography. She has quite a way with words - which I was already aware of, being already familiar with her work.
It was published online as it was written, and is available to read for free here; it's reverse chronological, so scroll to the bottom for the beginning. I read it in print, but the digital version has the advantage of being how it was originally published - plus colour photographs (as opposed to the B&W print version).
I can't articulate my thoughts on this, but I'm glad that I took the time to read it.
