I've been seeing rumblings about people wanting to post on DW more. Kick up a little activity around here. My thoughts on that, as always, are "I'll believe it when I see it". I expect, as usual, that it'll be a bit busy for a few weeks before it fizzles out. (But if my expectations prove incorrect, I'll of course be pleasantly surprised!)

I've also seen people talking about using it as an alternate fic posting platform. As a matter of course, all my stuff goes up over at roesslyng, and I do really like posting here in terms of formatting - I prefer uploading fic here rather than Ao3. The downside is that there's no way to gauge response - over on Ao3, people might not have anything to say, but they're willing to slap the kudos button even if they don't have an account. And of course there are bookmarks and stats and whatnot. There's no equivalent to that over here on DW, and even when Anon is turned on, people don't make use of it for commenting.

This isn't an issue for me per se, because I typically don't care so much, and a lot of the writing that I post on DW is scribbles and bite-sized things that I wrote as exercises, nothing special. But occasionally, I do write something that I want to share more widely, and... what to do in that case? Hell if I know.

In the meantime, I'm just going to continue as usual, I guess.

Guilty as charged in terms of extremely sporadic posting no matter how often I resolve to post more. /o\ (I should at least write up going to see Across the Spider-verse the other day! But also I want to go see it again with my sister, so maybe I should wait...) I am genuinely planning to improve my posting/cross-posting fic to brief_transit once I get my backlog taken care of, but I'm having to actually work at work again so that's going - slowly.

Sharing widely is definitely a problem when there isn't a big enough critical mass of comms to facilitate it. But admittedly populating and administrating a comm, and participating in it, is putting oneself out there way more than just uploading a fic to an archive, and it's understandable that people might not be able or willing -- especially in the absence of a supporting quorum!

I do kind of wonder what it would be like if more of these chatterers were less-jaded young people... but maybe that is wild flailing projection on my part.

Formatting is definitely a lot more intuitive on DW than AO3, but I agree with you that there isn't as much of an established infrasture for bookmarking or finding fics or giving/receiving response and else.
Why does it gotta be like this? Why are there no perfect solutions to everything? Argh >:(

Yeah, running a comm is definitely putting oneself out there. And it's hard work if you want to keep it active! I see the amount of effort some people go to just to keep their communities active and it's like, I really appreciate that, but I don't know if I have it in me.

It's kind of funny - back before Ao3 existed, I never would've cared about sharing more widely. I just... posted my stuff to whichever LJ comm existed for the fandom, and that was it.

I wish there were better options now, orz
