Reading Wednesday

Currently Reading: Orlando by Virginia Woolf. I saw the film a while back. Enjoyed it. Decided to pick up this one. It's a good read! I feel like... I dunno, I kind of wish I had read it a couple decades ago; I think Younger Me would have enjoyed it a lot.

Reading Next: Ehhh I dunno. Here's what I have out from the library -

War Diary by Yevgenia Belorusets. Documentation of the first forty-one days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. I picked it up because I've read some of this author's other work, but I'm not sure if I'm in the right mood to tackle this book. We'll see.

Parrotfish by Ellen Wittlinger. A YA trans coming out story. Summary seems to suggest it leans toward "things are kind of difficult at first but everything works out" kind of vibe. Not sure why I picked this one up, honestly.

Night of the Living Rez by Morgan Talty. Short story collection by a Penobscot author. I was expecting zombies, but the summary doesn't actually suggest zombies, though it seems some of the stories in this might have supernatural elements. We'll see.

I liked Parrotfish a lot when I read it, but that was also back when it was only one of a tiny handful of books with trans protagonists. I'm not sure how I'd feel about it now that there's such a large selection (and so many by trans authors) that I can be more choosey.

The selection at my local library for this sort of thing is still kind of small, so I'm glad they brought it in, at least. :D

I've been thinking of reading Orlando for a bit, especially after seeing some pictires from the film (Tilda Swinton is just gorgeous). How do you like it so far?

I do suggest reading it if you've been thinking of it! And/or watching the movie, which is pretty good (hell, just for Tilda Swinton and the costumes, I'm thinking of rewatching this weekend...)

I just finished it yesterday. Things got kind of abstract and loose toward the end; from what I remember, the film was more tightly-plotted and coherent. But overall an enjoyable read. You like stuff that deals with immortality, right? There's some neat bits where Orlando is really out of synch with the passage of time, I found it very effective.

(Uhhh since I'm here I might as well note that there's some racism in it - both in the sense of vocabulary and some plot-related stuff - I found some of it really jarring tbh. Figured it was worth a mention.)

Sounds like something I would like! (not the racism part, obviously, but I expected period typical attitudes) I'll try to put it on my summer reading list :D
