+ Woke up early. Got stuff Done instead of messing around. Feels good!

+ Suddenly overcome with the desire to re-read The Count of Monte Cristo. I can't find my copy of it (how does one misplace a book that thick?) but that is a small obstacle. :V It's such a good novel! So much happens in it! ...I've forgotten most of it aside from the general premise! What.

+ Language Brain is all over the place lately. "I want to learn Polish. No, Dutch. No, Chinese. No, I want to get better at Norwegian. Actually, my English kind of sucks, and I should work on that". Settle down, self!

+ I've had Taylor Swift's Midnights album on loop for the last few... weeks. At some point I think I'll have to buy the damn thing instead of borrowing it from the library. ;V Not as expected! ("Mastermind" is so good. And "Sweet Nothing". And "The Great War". And...)

it's been so long since i last read CMC i can't even remember the premise! 🤣 maybe time to get an ecopy... been curious why nif is so frequently described as the chinese count of mount cristo.

Re: NiF and CMC: I think it comes down to a combination of premise and execution.

Both CMC and NiF have: A guy with a previously good reputation, fucked over by the system in a huge way, who apparently dies - and then reappears years later with a new identity, loyal followers, and a genius plan to take revenge on the people who fucked him over. In addition to being geniuses, both Mei Changsu are charismatic and likeable, in-universe and to the audience.

And both works are on an epic scale and masterfully executed.

However - I haven't watched very many Cdramas, but it looks like some kind of betrayal + secret identity + revenge combination isn't terribly rare. So in some cases it could be people encountering this for the first time with NiF, and being like "Oh, this thing I like is just like this other thing that I like!", without realizing that it's more common than they expect.

BUT I dunno, I'm just spitballing here.

The Count of Monte Cristo is great! I read it for the first time a couple of years ago, and it immediately went on my list of "favorite classics". I definitely need to get my hands on a pretty physical copy at some point.

Midnights is also great, though admittedly I'm a huge Taylor Swift fan in general. I had it pre-ordered, haha.

Hmmm, if my copy really IS missing, I could use it as an opportunity to replace it with a really nice version, instead of a shabby paperback! That idea has merit....

As for Tswift, I'm a very casual fan, but when she hits with me, she sure does! I'm kind of bummed that the extended version of Midnights doesn't seem to be available on disc, though. :|a

The Count of Monte Cristo is always a good reread choice. There's just so much packed into it! I'm probably overdue for a reread sometime - but so many other books to read/reread, too... /o\

How is the Count of Monte Cristo? I've been thinking of finishing it for (counts fingers) a couple years now, but I did not finish it beyond the first chapter. The Chinese translation I had was godawful. Maybe the English translation is much better quality?
Languages. It's just like with WIPs. "Want to start learning German. Actually no, need to practice French. Actually no, wanna pick up Japanese. Actually no, why not give Norwegian a go. Actually no...who are we kidding here? Too many other life stuff to do." Why can't we have 40 hours in a day to spend?

Monte Cristo is EXCELLENT - I think I remember it starting a little slow, but then once I was in, I devoured it. So I definitely suggest finding an English translation and trying that. (I wish I could suggest one, but I still haven't found the book and don't remember which I read).
