To my delight, I discovered that Margrete den første|Margrete: Queen of the North was available via my library's streaming service. Soooo I made time to watch it today.
I enjoyed Trine Dyrholm's acting very much! She's a perfect Margrete I. Suppose I should seek out more stuff that she's in - I really liked watching her in general.
Also, loved the costumes. But I figured that would be the case from the trailer.
As for the plot itself - I feel like the pretender incident was a surprising choice for a movie about Margrete I of Denmark; her taking control and forming the Kalmar Union would be the more obvious cinematic story. Anyway - the unfolding of the conspiracy/pretender plot and all the twists involved there was interesting. It pulled in all of these disparate parts and slotted them together in a convincing way, but simultaneously it all felt more small-scale than it should have. Also, my knowledge of the Kalmar Union is admittedly not as detailed as I would like, but I think a few things were adjusted for drama (or possibly to make the portrayal of this incident more coherent than what we have from the historical record).
A small personal joy: I was able to understand a lot of the dialogue. Which... considering my audio comprehension sucks in general, and Danish tends to be challenging, I'm very surprised!
