MAG ep 101
Feb. 16th, 2021 08:28 pmThat feeling when you find yourself extremely into the Distortion, and you feel weird and confused about it (which is such a Spiral mood that it's pretty fitting, all things considered).
Char's fanart of Hetalia Ro as the Distortion was my first actual exposure to The Magnus Archives in any real sense, and ever since then I've latched onto every mention of Spiral-esque things in the canon. And yeah, partly it's "I'm going to be drawn to anything that relates to the very specific thing that brought me here in the first place". BUT THEN....
Okay uh
Wow did MAG 101 ever give me a lot to unpack.
Gertrude seriously... JFC. I was surprised/confused at the earlier episode, the one when we discovered that Michael Shelley/the Distortion used to be her assistant. Poor dude, he seemed nice? A little awkward, but nice? Almost in a Martinesque sort of way. I actually initially thought he was an intern or something rather than a regular assistant. And Gertrude seemed... mostly very patient, but also a little bit Done with him, which was understandable all things considered, if said awkwardness was a regular occurrence.
Maybe being 100% Done with him made it that much easier to feed him to the Spiral. Good gods.
I just feel so bad for him! He had absolutely no clue what was coming! He trusted her so much!
(I can see myself being the same way in such a position, and now I feel weird about it.)
WELL I find myself reassessing my impression of Gertrude. I mean, I was kind of already doing that anyway as more information was revealed, but I sure am taking another look at her now! Jesus. And I expect there'll be more of that, as there always is.
I'm a little bit confused by the whole "Michael got distracted, and Helen stepped in and replaced him" thing. It's almost like they're... two pieces that the Spiral has devoured, and the original person doesn't exist any more, but there's an afterimage of them there, and that afterimage has enough there to act to some degree. I don't know if I have that right. (Maybe it's deliberately confusing.)
Aaaand I find myself shipping one-sided Michael Shelley -> Gertrude Robinson because of course I do (er, I mean, before she sends him to his doom, obviously). He's awkward but nice, she's firm and in a position of authority and has a very attractive voice... I'm a simple man with simple tastes and a love for pining and age difference, what can I say.
(I suspect that Jonny Sims never imagined that there would be quite a few people who find his mom's voice acting hot. Haaa.)
Oh, and while I'm talking about this episode, I am 100% here for Jon getting tied up and whumped and gagged and all that good stuff. ...Man, was this episode ever good to me.

Date: 2021-02-21 10:56 pm (UTC)I took one look at that and was like "I have no idea what I'm looking at, but I'm super into it" and that solidified my eventual descent into TMA in general and Spiral-centric fixation in particular. ;p
Man, this episode was just So Much, and [/shoves fic drafts in drawer] I still have not recovered.
