Reading Wednesday
Aug. 26th, 2020 04:50 pmJust finished: She Wears Pain Like Diamonds by Alfa. Poetry. Mediocre. Reads more like "inspirational/motivational" platitudes than poetry. Don't waste your time with this one.
Also just finished: The Vacationers by Emma Straub. One of those "family drama" type of novels that I've become oddly addicted to consuming in audiobook form. After reading this I disliked most of the characters and had an unexpected desire to travel to Mallorca (which wouldn't normally be my thing, but I guess I'm just feeling really stir-crazy right now).
(Spoilery, I guess, though I don't think any of you would be interested in reading this one anyway) - The only character I actually liked was Carmen. She's not the kind of person I'd talk with much if I met her, because our interests do not intersect at all, but good lord. She seemed like the only mature, stable adult out of the whole bunch. She's steady and knows what she wants and she tries even though her boyfriend and the Posts don't deserve her. I practically cheered when she broke up with Bobby - way to go, ma'am, you don't need that asshole manchild and his classist dickbag parents. We didn't hear from her again after she left the picture, but I like to think that she did spend the rest of her vacation in mainland Spain after all, and that she had a great time, and that once she got back to Miami she eventually met someone nice and mature, with similar goals, and eventually she had the wedding she wanted....
Currently reading: The Ridgerunner by Gil Adamson. Apparently the second in a series, though so far it's not hard to get into at all. Set in Canada and Montana, against the background of WWI. A bit of a western, according to the description, though the period seems late for that - we'll see. Not far into it yet; so far we have backstory and some bank-robbing.
Reading Next: Bones by Tyler Pennock, which is poetry (hopefully better poetry than the previous). Right now I'm kind of trying to fill up the last few slots in my to-read goals, so I'm picking up whatever comes to hand that fits.
