What I'm reading
Jul. 23rd, 2020 05:09 pm@ Those who replied to my previous entry - Thanks. It's going to be a waiting game now. Still nervous! We'll see what happens.
And now for a "What am I reading" post, since I missed it on Wednesday.
Just finished: Be My Love, a novel by Kit Pearson, released in recent years. This is a middle-grade book, and it reads very much like one. I would've liked to enjoy it more than I did. Not that it was bad, I'm just very much not the target audience. I used to really enjoy some of Pearson's novels when I was a kid, but now I'm kind of worried about revisiting the ones I used to like, because I might not enjoy them as much.
Part of the point of the novel is the main character coming to realize that she is interested in women. There was a very basic "it's okay for women to love women" conversation in there, and it's really nice to see something like that in novels for such young audiences.
There were some writing choices that seemed odd to me, though.
The girl that the main character has feelings for is her cousin. Specifically, second cousin once removed (something like that), so not a terribly close relation, but still... cousins. In the story, they mainly see each other during the summers, and it would've been very easy to write them as childhood friends rather than cousins. It doesn't bother me, but it does surprise me that the author would write the story this way.
The crush also feels kind of pasted on. To me, the main character's jealousy re: her cousin and her relationships etc reads very much like ordinary jealousy, without romantic feelings involved. Then again, sometimes feelings are complicated, but... Well, I didn't find it convincing.
It kind of makes me wonder if the author had one idea in mind for the story, and then something changed later on.
Currently reading: The Immortals of Tehran by Ali Araghi. Magical realism set in Iran, featuring some unusual people with very long lives. I'm not very far into it yet, but so far I'm finding it engrossing, even if I haven't had much time to read much of it.
Reading next: N/A, I have no idea. Might be a while before I have time to pick up something new.
