Rose of Versailles
May. 18th, 2020 07:18 pmSo. I just finished watching Rose of Versailles.
A while back, I watched a few episodes of it through my library. Even though it was just a brief taste, I enjoyed it so much that I immediately ordered the series on disc. But it wasn't until recently that I had time to sit down, watch it all the way through, and appreciate it.
It's kind of interesting to watch something that was so influential and go "Ah, now I understand where that thing came from". I'd already been aware that there was some RoV influence in Utena, but it's another thing to know it abstractly, and another thing to actually have the context. (Since we're on the subject, I much prefer RoV, of the two.)
Lady Oscar is a wonderful character. She's so cool and strong, and... I appreciate that as time goes on, her understanding of things like her place in the world changes. Plus, just the whole concept of her, the uniform-wearing commander in 18th-century France, and people being surprised by her but for the most part going along with it to varying degrees - I enjoy that a lot.
There are some things I don't particularly like about it (a lot of things to do with Oscar's relations with Fersen, for one thing, and then that one episode with Andre...) but I'm willing to ignore the things that I dislike, because the good outweighs all that so much.
Anyway. 40 episodes is usually more of a time investment than I'm willing to put in, but it was time well spent. This series is a classic for a reason.
On another note: I knew going in that people ship Oscar/Marie Antoinette, of course, but it wasn't until I watched it that I found out that there's another very good femslash option here. Oscar/Rosalie is excellent stuff, bless their wonderful character interaction. I'm going to have to see what's out there as far as fanwork goes.
