VME Rewatch - Ep 02
May. 10th, 2019 09:44 amContinuing the Vatican Miracle Examiner rewatch. I wish I had been able to get to it sooner, because I actually like the Rosario arc a lot - I love a good murder mystery, and this incorporates that quite a lot, which is something I didn't anticipate when I watched the series the very first time.
I don't have a lot of general thoughts on this particular ep - the answers to the questions cover everything, I think. ;)
- Do you remember your overall reaction the first time you watched this episode? What was it like? Ep 2 is still very early on - were you sold on it yet, cautiously hopeful, downright skeptical?
I don't remember my initial impression. What I do remember is that at this point, I was hooked enough to keep going. I'd already buckled up and was in for the ride, as it were. Even the snip we get in the first minute (before the OP) was bonkers enough that I wanted to keep going. Though I don't think I really realized what I was in for. I think I expected something a bit more... ordinary? Fewer murders, at least.
- I think this is the first time we get one of VME's weird (pseudo)scientific explanations for a miracle. This one is still really tame by VME standards, but how did you feel about it back then? How do you feel about it now?
At the time, I didn't think much of it, probably because this one is relatively understated; not really all that weird as far as mysterious occurrences go. Giving it some thought, it reminds me a bit of ACD Sherlock Holmes, with the pseudoscientific explanations for a mysterious happening and so on. Definitely not as whackadoodle as some of the other things that happen in this series though.
- Does anything in this ep spawn any fic/art/fanwork ideas for you?
Nothing in particular, though the whole murder mystery angle always gives me desires for casefic, generally. I just... want Roberto and Hiraga getting pulled into horrible crimes that they have to solve. It's wonderful, they work so well together.
- We get quite a lot of the schoolboys this episode! What are your thoughts on them? Who's your favourite, do you have any ships involving them, what are your hopes for their future...
I LOVE MARIO. He fits really closely to a certain character type that I really enjoy. ...If this series had existed about 15 years ago, he probably would have been my favourite in the entire series, ahaha. As it is, yeah, really do like him a lot. The character design helps (all that hair!!) but he's just so... sweet and mysterious???
As an aside, I love the aesthetics of the greenhouse scene, where he and Sebastian are discussing Carlos and it's all very pretty but very serious at the same time....
- Favourite scene/moment involving our heroes? Favourite scene/moment involving the side characters? Or are those one and the same?
Definitely the scene where Roberto and Hiraga are discussing Roberto's book obsession. "I would even make a pact with the devil himself!" ROBERTO... then again I sympathize, hahaha.
Also, that bit with McGee at the end... PFF. SUCH A DRAMATIC SUDDEN APPEARANCE. What a way to end the ep. xD
Hopefully it won't take me so long to get to the next ep; revisiting the series has been pretty fun.
