So. My province overwhelmingly voted UCP. Which means we now have a Conservative provincial government, and a racist, misogynist, homophobic waste of oxygen is now the premier of Alberta.

I am not surprised. Not in the least. But I am angry, and disappointed, and sad. And I'm probably going to be angry, disappointed, and sad for a damn good while.

I foresee myself writing a lot of letters in the future regarding UCP policies and things they want to put into place. Protests, especially those arranged by anyone even moderately left, are not a thing that happens here; elsewhere in the province, yes, but not here. My ability to take part in that kind of thing has always been limited. But letter-writing is something I can do. Someone's got to make sure that those assholes know that not everyone in Fort Mac supports them.

Also: Certainly not looking forward to people saying "Oh, if you don't like it, just move". Those people can take their "advice" and shove it up their goddamn ass.

(And yeah, the whole "well just move!" advice isn't remotely helpful...a lot of times the people most hurt by shitty policymakers are also the ones least able to pack up and go elsewhere. Funny how that works. >_>)

And yeah, like... Hell. I COULD move. But right now I have a good, stable job, and a stable place to live, and a support network. If I moved, I would have NONE of those things. I'd be way worse off! Some people just don't have any sense.

It's THE WORST but I was kind of figuring it would go in this direction anyway.
Writing letters like that is hella' stressful, but... better than nothing! Hopefully it'll at least contribute to record of public opinion in some small way, or... something.

Ugh, it sucks, and I'm sorry so many people voted to make things worse for themselves and everyone else.

It seems, however, like the UCP went about making several promises it surely can't and won't keep, for the purposes of stoking/harnessing outrage (the "cut off the gas on day one" thing, the federal-provincial transfer payments referendum thing), and I can only hope it ends up as a play with fire, get burned situation, and there are people who are still capable of returning to their senses when that happens.

A lot of the large promises aren't likely to happen, you're right. But some of them, especially the social ones, are very worrying.

And to a degree it's less the UCP itself, and more that so many people around me very firmly support whatever they're peddling, if you know what I mean? Like, I already felt isolated here, but now I have quite a confirmation that a lot of the people around me are just plain... not compatible with me on any level. At all. (Pardon for the vent, I'm just - well, frustrated.)

For what it's worth, I agree: you should not ever have to move.

My personal stake: despite the fact that I live in Ottawa-the-city, I have family and friends scattered across Alberta.

I am so sorry - I know the feeling of "Oh, if you don't like it, just move", I live in a really conservative area and elections are just not much fun.
