Apr. 13th, 2019 03:41 pmSo. I cast an advance vote for the provincial election this morning. I rather like that it didn't involve any fuss or waiting; I think I'll do this for future elections when possible.
So. State of Wood Buffalo region: NDP vs 3 conservative parties - UCP, Alberta Party, and AIP. (How the hell is the ALberta Independence Party still a thing? Who knows.)
I'm not terribly optimistic about the outcome, both in my area and the province in general. I really, really do not want my province to go back to a conservative government, because it'll probably stay that way for ages.
I'm trying not to worry too much, but... Well. Y'know.
And the thing is, I'm not even that crazy about the NDP in Alberta! Their pro-pipeline stance does not sit well with me at all. But at least they do have policies re: making an attempt to diversify the economy and encourage renewables. Variety is good.
...And on average, they aren't openly homophobic, unlike the more conservative parties in Alberta. That's. Um. Good.
I just. The popularity of the UCP really creeps me out. It is no secret that many of the people running for UCP are openly homophobic and cozying up to the alt-right. So, to think that anyone would support those people... to think that so many people in my city would support that -
Don't get me wrong, it doesn't SURPRISE me at all. But it does remind me of exactly what position I am in. And it makes me upset and angry and sad.
