Reading Wednesday
Nov. 21st, 2018 07:45 pmCurrently Reading: A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, in which a grumpy old man's grumpiness gets foiled by his neighbours at every turn. It's a light, fun, and breezy read, which is what I expected after reading this author's other novel, My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She's Sorry. However, what I didn't expect was for suicidal ideation to be part of the plot... I just checked the inside flap (which I usually don't bother to read) and it isn't mentioned anywhere in the summary. No surprise; in something that's supposed to be a comedy (or rather, a drama-comedy), including that might put readers off. Anyway, considering the author's previous work and the nature of this particular story, I'm expecting a happy ending. And though I'm not quite halfway through it yet, I'm not surprised this novel was so popular.
Reading Next: Going to be one of these -
+ The Grimoire of Kensington Market by Lauren B Davis. Fantasy set in Toronto, and partly inspired by HCA's "The Snow Queen". Well, that's enough to draw my attention! We'll see how this one turns out.
+ Starlight by Richard Wagamese. This is Wagamese's final novel, and it wasn't quite complete before his death. Its subtitle on the inside cover is "an unfinished novel", so... I suppose it's what it says on the tin, and I'll prepare myself accordingly. But I like this guy's work quite a bit, so I think I will enjoy it even if it isn't properly finished. (I have no idea what it's about - I usually prefer not to read summaries. :D )
