Nov. 16th, 2018 09:12 pmI kind of want to write a trashy arranged marriage fic with Denmark/Norway, because that's what my id desires, I guess.
Problem is, I can't decide when to set the damn thing.
Possibilities:
+ During the time of Margaret I of Denmark, but before the Kalmar Union
+ 1523, after the collapse of the Kalmar Union
+ 1537, reign of Christian III, after the Norwegian Riksråd was absolished + Norway came under more direct control of Denmark
I think most of the fanwork I've seen dealing with this trope for this pairing sets it during Margaret I's reign. But frankly, that period kind of gives me a headache; I find it challenging to keep everything straight. (Maybe I just need to read more about it?) However, I do very much like the idea of them having a Personal Thing going on shortly before Sweden enters the picture and the Kalmar Union happens.
1523 would be interesting, because it's a bit of a tricky time, and - from a trope perspective - it would make sense to arrange something personal between the Nation-personifications in order to, err... link them more firmly together and establish a more secure and formal union between them.
1537 works pretty well for the "arranged marriage" part of it, as it's when they entered into a "real union" (I believe the term is) at that point. But I'm not sure the dynamic of the time is quite what I'm looking for with these particular characters.
...Looks like I should start reading more about Margaret, I guess! [/facepalm] I think I have some books that deal with that area, albeit probably not in the amount of detail that I would want. I'll have to see if I can dig them up once I get home.
I confess, part of the reason I love the Scandinavia Trio in Hetalia is that it gives me so much potential to play with unions-as-marriage if I want to. I usually don't write them as actual marriage, but like, I could. And honestly I tend to go for that kind of vibe even if strictly speaking it isn't actually like that. So, you've got:
-First Sweden-Norway union (arranged marriage)
-Denmark-Norway (arranged marriage)
-Kalmar Union (three-way marriage)
-Second Sweden-Norway union (forced marriage)
...What can I say, I love it when my favourites get shoved into this kind of scenario whether they want it or not. [/coughs]
Anyway. Yes. That sure is a thing. And as soon as I'm finished with my current exchange assignment, I'll start on something like this, probably.
