Canadian Music Recs~ ♪ ♫ ♪
Oct. 4th, 2018 07:57 pmI heard some awesome stuff on the radio today, sooo let's do some quick recs!
☆ Beatrice Deer is a Mohawk/Inuk musician from Quebec. She's one of the nominees for the 2018 Canadian Folk Music Awards for the work on her album My All To You, and it's pretty easy to see why. Lovely stuff! If you like your folk music to be mixed with a bit of Inuit throat singing, give this one a try. You can hear the title track "My All To You" on youtube here. The album itself is available on Bandcamp here, and you can listen to all the tracks there - including "Immutaa", which is the song I heard on the radio today.
Speaking of the Canadian Folk Music Awards, you can view the list of nominees here. A lot of these names are new to me; looks like I'll have to check some of them out. :)
☆ Justine Vandergrift is a singer based in Calgary, Alberta. There's a certain quality in her voice that I really love, though I can't quite put my finger on what it is. Music-wise, her work reminds me a bit of the style of country I grew up with and still love. The song I heard today was "Waiting for Nothing" from her album Yes Alright OK; you can listen to that one on youtube here, or check the whole album on bandcamp here.
☆ Derina Harvey Band is a group based in Edmonton, Alberta, playing energetic Celtic rock. Really fun stuff. I happened to hear "Sheilagh's Brush" today, which you can find on youtube here, and the moment it hit me I couldn't help but feel: Ohh, nice! It's from their album Rove and Go, which you can find here. They released a single this past July, titled Up All Night, which you can hear on youtube here. I love this one - it's really fun and rockin' - and I hope it'll eventually be on an album, or at least an EP or something.
☆ And while I'm on the subject, the radio station that I listen to is CKUA. They play a delightful mix of stuff; lots of Canadian music, including indigenous music, as well as stuff from all over the world, and from a ton of different decades. Genre-wise, most of their weekday programs are pretty eclectic, ranging from folk to soul to funk to vintage rock to who-knows-what. But they also have programs dedicated to specific genres - jazz, classical, bluegrass (!!!), and so on. Aside from playing good music, CKUA is pretty neat because it's a donor-funded non-profit station. It's also the oldest public radio station in Canada - it's been broadcasting for over 90 years, and still going strong. <3
