May. 23rd, 2018 09:56 pmThere is an out-of-control forest fire near Janvier.
Janvier is part of my municipality, but it's far away - about 120km. The Wood Buffalo region is very large.
It's still worrying, though.
Considering what happened a couple of years ago, and everything. And these fires travel fast.
And depending on the direction it goes, it could block highway 881, which as far as I know is the only way to enter/exit that particular area. And it's one of the few roads leading into/out of the municipality. Technically it isn't even its own road; it branches from highway 63.
And I just... it's so hot, and we have had so little rain, and I shouldn't feel so stressed out because, hell, it's over a hundred kilometres away, but. It's worrying.
The municipal notice says* that the fire is 10KM away from Janvier. That does not seem like much. A mandatory evac notice hasn't been announced, but hopefully people will leave of their own accord, or at least prepare to get out of there, and head down to Lac La Biche or something. Janvier area is low population, so theoretically it won't be difficult to get those people out if necessary, but....
I probably don't need to be packing a just-in-case bag, but you know what, I'm scared, and it's okay to be scared. It's probably a perfectly normal response to be scared and stressed and so on, all things considered. Taking into account the events of two years ago + my own neurosis, I mean. And if this thing gets under control tomorrow, I can just unpack it and put everything back, it's no big deal. So. Yes.
